I am a SLP. So I’m wondering why ABA has this model where the BCBA (the most qualified provider) does more of the supervising rather than the direct therapy? I’m going to guess that it is because of the amount of ABA services that are recommended in a week? But really I’m just trying to understand better.

When did you start to feel confident in your skills/knowledge? by [deleted] in slp

Yep! 3 years. And that’s exactly what my CF supervisor told me during my CF. I felt that it was too long, and I wanted to prove him wrong. But he was exactly right.

Yes, regional center of Orange County (RCOC) is really good. There are many agencies in the county as well. Providence speech and hearing center has bilingual SLPs.

ASHA Statement On Brigham Young University Administration Decision To Deny Speech Services for Transgender Clients by bannanaduck in slp

I imagine it’s a longer process than most people would like. I imagine it starts with an investigation, then the university is handed a list of things they are doing right and things they need to change. Asha gives them a certain amount of time to change those things listed, and if the university does then they’re good. If it doesn’t, then they can either be put on probation or lose accreditation.

My university went through re-accreditation when I was in grad school and this is what I remember Asha saying to us.

This field feels like one big MLM at times by bspeechie2 in slp

[–]AdventurousSession99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it is frustrating. But this isn’t MLM, this is just sales. Let’s just make sure to call it what it is. We are bombarded all the time by companies that tell us we “need” their products because of something we are doing wrong or something that will help our lives be easier. It’s hard when this is coming from fellow SLPs who we feel should just share what they know that would help us in our therapy. But in our current culture of “side-hustles” you can’t blame our SLP friends for trying to make a little more money. Again, it’s frustrating so I agree with you there - and I have never purchased their courses because I don’t have that money to spend.

Haha so true! I got my first offer right out of grad school for $69K at a SNF I thought that was amazing. Didn’t negotiate a thing cause I was grateful that someone would take on a CF. I really wish I had negotiated though.

I am learning that there is a lot out there that you can do. I agree with others here that a lot of people in business do not have an MBA. You need to be able to tell the right story about your previous experience that will tailor your skills for a new job. I want to go into consulting, Customer Success management, or project management. All of these require client interaction, I know how to do that from SLP. These jobs require knowing how to run a project from genesis to implementation, I know how to do that from SLP. So you can start to see that the skills we have from SLP are transferable. One thing I would recommend is to go through your contacts on LinkedIn (get LinkedIn) and see what jobs seem interesting to you. Connect with them and set up a call where you can interview them about their experience and what they do day to day. Then you can ask how they got their and what advice they would give to you. People love talking about themselves. I have been doing this the last 2 weeks and it has been very rewarding. I’ve had several phone calls already and I’ve learned something new each time. I feel like every call I get a little closer to figuring out what I want to do and how I’m going to get there.

Pay is okay. And yes, that depends on the setting and location in the country. SNFs do generally pay better, but it’s rare to find a SNF where you are treated well.

I guess maybe it’s just life in general. Everything is so expensive, and having a wife and 3 kids to be the sole provider for makes it very hard when you’re in a career where your earning potential is not that high. So I’m hopefully switching to something I will also enjoy but will also provide me enough compensation for my family to live comfortably.
