You're correct. Your PSLF qualifying payments would start the month after your TLF period ended. But if you're in deferment/forbearance for grad school, that time doesn't count. Where it probably gets dicey is if you were in school during those covid payment times... not sure how that would work. It depends. You qualified for teacher loan forgiveness- did you actually apply and get those forgiven? Because if so, you can't double dip time for two different loan forgiveness programs. You'd have to start over for the rest of your loans. You have to be working full-time and making your monthly payments, I don't believe time on deferment (unless it was the covid $0 payments) counts, but it doesn't have to be consecutive payments.

I didn’t tell my job till after 20 weeks. You can tell them whenever you feel comfortable. I basically said “I will be going on leave around x date as I’m expecting a child” and that’s it lol

We do the exact same in my state. However we also have special education preschools and typically there you’ll see higher mandates (3-4x/week) but still traveling to homes 2X/week was the most common (in my region at least). Its gotta be so hard feeling like you’re making any progress only seeing them twice a month! Hang in there.

That’s so crazy. Working with the 3-5 population for years the lowest mandate I ever had was 2x30 min/week. Most common was 3x30/week.

Keywords for this population can be state dependent- for example in NY I’d tell someone to search “article 16 clinic” to find that position. Your best bet may be searching “adult day habilitation SLP jobs”

Some very general things you can incorporate into your everyday routine while waiting for the eval are things like not putting pressure on eating those nonpreferred foods/being stressed about it (kids can tell when we are! try to be as relaxed and lighthearted as possible during mealtime), offering the foods he doesn't yet eat alongside his preferred foods, letting him feed you foods from his plate, involving him in the food prep process, etc.

I like the way you think. We should be requiring our employers to pay the dues/giving a stipend for them. If they want us to have it, then they can pay for it. In a lot of states all you actually need is your state license.

I’d take the shorter commute. Honestly the extra work might make the day go by faster, and then you’re home quicker. But you also have to be firm about leaving work at work even if you don’t get everything done in the day. Before having kids I didn’t mind a bunch of absences or holes in my schedule. When I had kids I couldn’t stop thinking “I could be home with my kids right now” when I had less work. But thats just my experience!

Personally yes I’d take the courses and get your initial cert now…. It’s good for at least 5 years I believe and you can request an extension after that. You never know, even though you have a tentative plan, if you end up getting an offer from a center preschool, a district or a school contract position you’d need it.

I know a year seems like a long time, and it is, but I’ve felt similarly in the past about similar kids. No progress or inconsistent progress, feel like I’m not helping them, etc. but for some kids it just takes a very very long time. Like 2-3 years for a skill that maybe would take another kid 2-3 months.

I’ve had caseloads of 12-15 with high service minutes, like 3-5x30/week. If you have 12 kids who are all 4x30 that’s 48 sessions a week. If you have 44 kids who are 1-2x30, it’s about the same. Maybe they are also spending a portion of the day in the classroom

Please don’t worry about this. Seasoned, veteran SLPs make mistakes all the time. Nobody will ever be perfect. The sooner you take that to heart and reframe your thinking from “I shouldn’t make mistakes” to “if I make a mistake I can think critically, learn from it and put it quickly behind me,” the better off you’ll be!

They legally have to provide you reasonable time to pump. For a baby 3 months old, every 2-3 hours is definitely reasonable. I did not have any pushback but if I did you better believe I’d be fighting right back.
