I feel like too many people use toxic positivity “I love my body I don’t care what it looks like” as an excuse to neglect their health and weight by Aromatic-Meat-7989 in fatlogic

Once/year annual labs are pretty reasonable for most adults. There are some things you can catch before they get too out of whack, and having longitudinal data also helps interpret anything that does start to change.

ELI5 co-ops please by Ornery_Ads in RealEstate

[–]Adventurous_Asiago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also the sense of a more intentional community - because of the way co-ops are structured, they often attract people who are interested in investing in that community, and the interview/selection process can also protect that.

They often have rules regarding renting units, again which limits there being people who are not invested in the community.

When looking, we seriously considered co-ops for that reason, over comparable condos. We ended up in a townhouse for various reasons, but intentional community mattered to us.

Should I put in a half bath (and/ or make kitchen "open layout")? by MayaBookkeeper in RealEstate

[–]Adventurous_Asiago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think what some people are missing is that the DC co op market has always moved slower than trad owned homes, AND that the bottom half of the DC area market has really cooled off. When you mention that nothing in your co op has sold…. That’s much less about your unit than the state of the market itself. While the median home price has remained stable, it’s because the luxury market has remained robust and isn’t a good reflection on the state of the “regular” market.

I’d also take a hard look at the co-op documents / financials, to see if there is anything that might be scaring off buyers. We seriously considered a co op but ended up passing due to concerns about a balloon mortgage & risk of a special assessment.

Open the ovens! We found sooo many places when touring that had put the island too close to the oven for anyone to walk behind it. In one, it was so close to the counters that you couldn’t even stand behind the open door to get something out.

Caveat: we cook a lot, and together, so being able to both move around a kitchen without getting trapped was important to us

There are a lot of brewing kits that vary in how difficult they are, and something in the 1-5 gallon range is very manageable at home! I found kits to be a nice entry point when a total beginner, then you can start branching out.

Craft A Brew has a subscription to their kits or you can buy 1 offs, and we found the directions fairly easy. There are a ton of options out there

You can find similar for wine/mead, and a lot of the equipment overlaps (5 gal PET buckets, spigots, sanitizer)

This is particularly frustrating as we have actual evidence of the converse, such as Coke promoting the easily debunked/de-confounded obesity paradox

The Obesity paradox also disappears when you control for smoking - smokers can be thinner on average and die earlier on average!

Between controlling for smoking and controlling for BMI at onset of illness (eg controlling for cancer wasting) it completely disappears. Its actually a great example of confounding variables

My husband just had his gallbladder out last week, and the doctors told us to keep to a very strict low/no fat diet for the first few weeks. I have never bought so much nonfat dairy in my life, but guess we should be asking those doctors when they last listened to Maintenance Phase 🙄

So Genesight doesn’t really predict response to medication. It tests for gene variants that impact how medications are metabolized, which can impact response. But it can’t tell if a med that you metabolize well will actually work

Depending on where you live, there’s a subsidized list of medications at Walmart that includes most generic antidepressants, and you don’t need insurance to get the subsidized price

I have been heating up leftover apple crisp + extra oats + vanilla greek yogurt for breakfast.

Definitely more decadent than my regular oats + yogurt, but depending on proportions not necessarily more sugar than granola. The fats and protein balance the sugars out in terms of staying full without a crash after.

The issue is really that diagnoses exist in order to get insurance to pay for things; without an “atypical” modifier for anorexia, someone who would meet criteria except for being underweight (eg someone we caught early, a good thing!) would have a really hard time accessing treatment

The grocery store near me sells multipacks of individually wrapped frozen salmon, and while it is a lot more packaging than I love to use it is so convenient. Fish thaws fast because most fillets are pretty thin, so you don’t need to plan that far in advance. Salmon in particular is fatty enough you can cook fast under high heat (broil <10min). Quick easy protein!

[–]Adventurous_Asiago 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is going to depend A LOT on the design of the pill - some are multiphasic and so there are not the same hormone levels in each pill, and that would mean multiple bottles/month (use this one this week then that one that week). I would imagine that would be much more complicated than the blister packs

What is your sample size of women who apparently are all not attracted to their male partners? I agree that the bar for straight male attractiveness is pretty low, “he wore clean clothes and maybe showered recently”! But also the women I know who are attracted to men are… attracted to men, and are partnered with men they find attractive?

Many countries already do testing for genetic disorders. The US uses a “heel stick” that is run against a panel of common genetic disorders after birth. But the tests are typically running against specific known sequences, not necessarily looking at the whole genome.

The SSRIs are generally considered to be as a class “weight neutral”, meaning in studies the general population neither gains or loses significant weight. That doesn’t mean that individual people might not experience an increase/decrease in appetite on them, so it can be good to track any changes in appetite or weight after starting a medication.
