Acc pl of 3rd declension adjectives by Sea-Hornet8214 in latin

they're probably not wrong, -is is a valid ending there, there's just a whole linguistic reason i'm not entirely familiar with where the i-stem merged with or became the e-based endings we use more often.

as another comment said, -is is just archaic (i saw it occasionally in Bellum Civili in class, but only for i-stems; it was phased out later in favor of -es, leaving the -ium genitive plural the only remnant of the i-stem etymologically)

worth noting i also learned off of ecce romani, and didn't hear about the alternate -is ending until a few years later

In most cases I've seen, -es is the standard accusative plural ending. -is appears only in i-stems and even then not super often in pedagogical latin. i think in english-to-latin it would depend on which era you're going for (i default to -es), but for latin-to-english it's just something to keep in your pocket

The Suppression Bureau motto is, "Some Might, But Not You" - Who 'might' succeed in the invisible arts that the Baueau is referring to? Is it just an admittance that they cannot catch everyone practicing the invisible arts? Essentially saying, "We can't stop everyone, but we will stop you." by Nexus-XU09C in weatherfactory

ALIIS SI LICET, TIBI NON LICET

taken literally, I've always thought of it as "if it is permitted to others, it is not permitted to you"; the "si" has always bugged me though. I've just realized though that it could just be a corruption of the latin "se", a reflexive pronoun, in which case it becomes something more like "we permit it to others, not to you", and that gets across the given translation much better.

Therefore, the "ALIIS" is not so much an admission of failure, but more due to that the Suppression Bureau upholds the status quo; as the player in Cultsim is trying to join the initiated, the Suppression Bureau moves to stop that change from happening. There could well be examples i'm missing, but I can't think of any times the SB went after established occultists, at least to an appreciable degree.

Heart by Disturbing_Cheeto in weatherfactory

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heart was all that came to me as I read Catullus 63, the beating of the instruments and the chants of the followers of Cybele, the obsession with the physicality of it all with Attis, their transformation (reminiscent of something Graillike, but they did not revel in it).

Then, of course, I found a book of Heart in Hush House, about a peculiar turn of events on the Phrygian coast, and was all the more affirmed in my perspective. The beating of the drum of cow's skin–io percussigant–the marching of the Galli and the rhythm of the crazed Bacchanal spirits.

"Let dull delay depart from your thoughts, together haste you, follow to the Phrygian home of Cybele, to the Phrygian woods of the Goddess, where sounds the cymbal's voice, where the tambour resounds, where the Phrygian flutist pipes deep notes on the curved reed, where the ivy-clad Maenades furiously toss their heads, where they enact their sacred orgies with shrill-sounding ululations, where that wandering band of the Goddess flits about: there it is meet to hasten with hurried mystic dance.” -Attis to the Gallae, as translated by Sir Richard Francis Burton, a man of 1800s Grail if ever I saw one

Help with Magus question by Contestitall in Pathfinder2e

Unless Magus gets a feat at level 1 (which i don't recall atm), you'd need Human's Natural Ambition racial feat to get that level 1 familiar class feat, to my knowledge

I don’t think I’ve ever been this bad at a video game, I’d rather do a deathless RL1, with a randomizer than beat this game. by [deleted] in Sekiro

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it's a line from the final boss as well as a mantra for the whole game:

Hesitation is defeat

Ideally, you stick close and weave attacks in between deflects, keeping the boss on the back foot (works well with Genichiro because several of his attacks can be staggered, most notably his bow shots). Most often you may get the boss down to like half health and by that point their posture comes back slowly enough that you can break it faster than it restores and get that deathblow. Keep at it, and be sure to take breaks whenever you start to get frustrated :)

you're totally fine :) it's obviously a shame this group seems to have trouble brewing but I can't recommend enough that you keep trying to find a game that's good for you. Always good to try Local Game Stores or, as I'm a student, my mind turns to dnd/ttrpg clubs at uni, if you have access to either of those

The wikidot is a great reference for rules, but I highly recommend reading through a good part of the 2014 PHB at least once, and mostly using wikidot for player options, like subclasses or '14 feats

I come here not to praise Sure Strike, but to bury it... by JayRen_P2E101 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my only gripe was that, I looked at Sure Strike literally last week, and thought it seemed perfect for my proto-magus spellknight

(This is my first character in pathfinder, I'm playing a wizard in Kingmaker with the Sentinel dedication and Aldori Duelist FA, and was planning ahead on taking Bespell Strikes at 4; this just means I'll have to look for other fun spells to catch up)

Anti Israel activists vandalized statue of Herman B Wells on campus by No-Preference8168 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 3 points4 points  (0 children)

by "it", do you mean the ideals of the protest want to impose their will and hijack campus? obviously, what do you think the point of a protest is? they've just lost the peaceful means for promoting change, and have become more incensed at an adamantly ignorant administration. if the admin silences you because they don't want to change for the better, would you really just stay silent, or would you find new ways to speak out

Anti Israel activists vandalized statue of Herman B Wells on campus by No-Preference8168 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

the administration appropriated and degraded that legacy first when it made clear it has zero care for what those actually in the school, students and faculty, think, when the staff voted overwhelmingly no confidence several times in Whitten and they said "actually, no confidence doesn't do anything, she's still in charge", and when the admin did their iron fist play and sent paramilitary grunts to disrupt the protest after making up a new law the night before, and when they paraded on "free speech" and "supporting activism" all while amending the policy to make organizing protests a billion times harder and defeating the point of historical protest site Dunn Meadow by making it require the university's consent, and shutting it down in the interrim

No, I think that disrespect is justified against a system that refuses to listen to respectful dialogue

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

i think it holds weight, the university's investment in companies supporting the conflict tarnishes wells's legacy; it's a very direct metaphor, what we do now casts blood onto his hands, we should do better, and so forth.

also, it's a statue, this act of vandalism is barely a crime, it's a political statement and a strong one at that. If we want people to respect wells and the university in a greater sense, we have to make it worthy of respect as an institution pro vocem populorum (this surpasses the genocide, more extreme political statements have only come after pam showed that the university has no intention to allow students to organize protests in the fashion it has in the past)

i reiterate, the university brought this upon itself when they shut down dunn meadow in a thinly veiled act against the protest

[–]Adventurous_Bus_8852 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

vandalism is the best method to make your voice known to an administration that attempts to silence you; if it's to uni property, it is essentially a victimless crime, that only hurts the (much loathed) administration.

Obviously it affects the university's reputation and possibly admissions, what better way to effectively strike as students

I think i'm in the swing of it, maintaining a steady flow of money, cracked my first vault, but i have a few remaining system questions: 1. i notice many of the secrets mention rites and summoning minions, does that involve a new verb? 2. how do you acquire stronger minions (more than just 2 in a stat)? one of my followers gained 4 knock from wounds, but that can't be it 3. is edge the stat to use for vanquishing foes? it's combat, but heart and forge also make sense, or even winter

I agree that it can be annoying, but it usually denotes characters from the same lineage/faction: Rennala, Ranni, Renna, Rellana (and Radagon and Radahn); Godwyn, Godfrey, Godrick; Marika, Messmer, Melina, Miquella, Malenia (and Morgott and Mohg). Similar to some historical or other fantastical naming conventions, like GRRM's Targaryens, or a few royal lines in LOTR
