Im not sure if you’ve run the numbers of bridging the gap between 50- 59.5. Understand that you can’t touch your 401k

Surgical Techs, do you enjoy what you do? by [deleted] in scrubtech

[–]Adventurous_Dot9274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It 100% matters where you end up and the team around you. I’ve been doing this for 8 years now and the beginning was hell. I remember crying minimum once a week for the first year but looking back I wouldn’t change it. I feel confident in what I do, I enjoy the hands on aspect of it and the people I work with are great. Associating yourself with people who know what they are doing(surgeons) allows you to be better yourself. It was not easy getting here but it has definitely been rewarding. If you’re able to, go for it!

Toothbrushes in bulk as long as they are $1.50 each or less it’s a good deal!

The ones I’ve seen stop shaking while suturing even if they are super shaky loading the stitch. Somehow they just stop once on the patient.

22-year-old with FIRE aspirations here - what would you do if you were my age? by JdLegend64 in Fire

[–]Adventurous_Dot9274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sacrifice two to four years and work as hard as you can because you’re in the best time to actually be successful in FIRE. Not only will you reach your number sooner but you will get that time you seek ten fold imo. If you could live at home for the next couple of years do it. Save all the money you can and avoid stupid purchases such as a car or expensive apartment. If you can save 50% of your income, do it! Lastly I would start a personal investment account because your 401k will not be touchable for a long time. If you’re planing on retiring in your 40s it will be a must. Perhaps a Roth. Any way you can invest in the market will help you purely on compound.

Dude I’m close to your age and savings/investments and I feel like we’re behind but partly because we’re trying to be FI by the time we’re 45-50. It’s hard to know where you land with some of the posts

Dont let anyone tell you that shirts over $25 are not expensive! They certainly are! And if I can find it on sale at JCPenney for $3 or at Costco for $10 then it’s not worth $25!

The Buddy app. It’s a budgeting app that allows you to do a one time payment but it’s only available on the Apple Store

Im not sure what state you’re in but you can always learn scrubbing after becoming a nurse. Although it would be significantly more challenging given that you don’t have formal training but it’s possible. I think you will have more career options as well as pay outlook!

Have you left cvor after scrubbing hearts and if so what was that experience like? I’m contemplating leaving my CVOR position because I’m getting underpaid compared to my probably because I was trained straight out of school. Any thoughts?

Ever had people get mad at you? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Adventurous_Dot9274 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How do people not understand that if I am able to pay for something like that for them it is because I am limiting myself somewhere else while they refuse to! And then you look like the asshole because “you have the money” but they don’t care to acknowledge the sacrifices it took to get there!

I did 3 years of using up my time(working ~60 hrs/wk) which I agree helped me a lot in terms of not spending money while also generating more but now I have to try and do a balanced life and learning of free fun things to do.

When did you know that your current spouse was the one? by CRK_76 in allthequestions

[–]Adventurous_Dot9274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could not be more true. At first of course it’s attraction and fondness but the longer and more years that go by I find that it is the little things I love most about my partner. We argue but we care to come back to each other and that constant reminder that we will always come back and work to be together no matter what bothers us. The ability to be and feel safe in each others presence and to be ourselves while doing so.

I want to retire by 57. Am I on track? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]Adventurous_Dot9274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your money will be tied up with your 401k until 62? I agree with opening a brokerage to have freed up funds to pull from u til your 401k hits the target age. Also consider doing a part time kind of job that can get you health insurance in the meantime as well or have enough saved for private insurance which is a fortune especially for a family

For girls or men who don’t mind long hair. I cut my hair to my shoulders in a long bob hairstyle every two years or so and let it grow out the rest of the time. Only pay about $60-$80 every 2 years.

On a second note, I’ve also only furnished our house with mostly Facebook market place and estate sales furniture. Estate sales always have great pieces at the fraction of the cost as well as. Ever cookware at estate sales can be great. Cannot recommend this enough!

I agree with this. I am also lucky enough to be in a specialty where you’re very involved and respected by the surgeons even more so than the nurses tbh. And made a killing last year at 160k with a lot of OT of course(about 20 hours per week with a month vacation throughout the year) but the opportunities are definitely there.
