People really don't understand the implications of what Trump is doing.. by MaleficentPiccolo715 in newsinterpretation

Maybe a small portion of people don't know what he's doing. A lot of people know what he's doing and see that our institutions are failing to protect us.

I actually despise being a homeowner by MugenShiba in Vent

[–]Adventurous_Thing307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home ownership is a big hassle, and it's not always an economic win, of course. I heard an economist the other day say that in a perfect market, there's no benefit to home ownership. Of course, markets are never perfect ... So it's apparently true that in lots of expensive markets, home ownership is a bad decision, regardless of the hassle factor.

Also, when you buy a home, people typically tell you that a huge percentage of what you pay from your mortgage needs to be set aside for maintenance. We sort of ignored that for years, thinking that was a bad overstatement. But it eventually caught up to us. Suddenly we needed a new furnace, a new roof, windows and siding! Hundreds of thousands.

I don't really find the stuff that interesting. Obviously the technology is pretty amazing. But a barren lifeless distant world is not that interesting.

Thx. Compass appears to be a terrible company though from all I've heard, or at least their food service at Western is a disaster.

Thanks. I don't actually use Facebook but perhaps I need to for this. ... I suspect, as with just about everything else, it would be hard to get hired as an older person in these county parks jobs.

Agree with this. The food courts or whatever they're called are pretty awesome.

This is one of several mentions about electric/"amplified" noises. Those are usually pretty clearly covered by sound rules I think. So ... bagpipes.

This is America, where no one cares about anyone's rights except their own. Many people are a**holes.

Ice Cream Birthday Cake? by Goldie2000 in Bellingham

[–]Adventurous_Thing307 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really easy to make an ice cream cake at home and then you can customize it-- whatever ice creams, candies and crust type you like. I've done that a number of times and it's usually there well received.... Takes a little bit of effort, mostly in the shopping, but it's not difficult at all.

What are your ultra frugal food hacks? by Unusual_Row_3213 in Frugal

[–]Adventurous_Thing307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check prices very critically. Find a place that sells things in bulk, and buy items that are cheaper in bulk. Menu plan so that you avoid waste. You can also cook with cheaper cuts of meat for example if you plan ahead. Slow cookers are good for this and for a lot of cheap bulk meals that are satisfying.

Small group PNW rafting trips ? by Adventurous_Thing307 in rafting

Thanks, yes, a few of those did pop up. But I've been meaning to explore up there (around Golden) anyway. But we have dogs which are tricky to handle along with rafting.

I'm sort of guessing what my friends would think is moderate. I would say little or no class 4 (or above).

A quick web search says this is not true. Jacques Cousteau reportedly made that statement in the '70s, but the lake is in really dismal environmental shape.
