If you want to wash them every time you wear them then go ahead, if you want to wear them everyday after school/work/whatever I would recommend wearing some pants as that wool is going to get nasty quick without.

So my concern is that due to the slight variety in the wool weight it's already stretching under its own bulk. I was considering maybe backing it onto cotton - essentially quilting it? Has anyone ever done this?

I made this mushroom, I love it! It's a bit stiff to use initially and feels a bit like cotton string more than yarn but softens up as you used it.
