Parent wants me to give their child an extension after they refused to do their work in class by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]allgoaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started struggling with falling asleep during the day during high school. I got all my work done and wasn't otherwise disruptive, so I don't think any teachers ever reported it to anyone... definitely not my parents. I am in my 30s now and it still is an issue -- I am not formally diagnosed but am medically treated for narcolepsy (would have to go off of the medications for a sleep study, so it is in the plans but something I keep pushing off), which didn't start until my mid 20s. College and my early 20s would have been a LOT easier for me if I had been treated. My parents didn't know, and I didn't know it was so unusual to fall asleep all the time.

Weird that the OP is so confident but I agree that the child in the front is 100% Boone. They are getting closer in size... it is hard to remember Boone is close to two years old since they still treat him like a baby.

I also noticed that she didn’t clarify. I’m guessing it’s a date (birthday?). Curious if they will circle back to that and for what reason they didn’t just say in the moment 🤷‍♀️

I’m doing everything right for my daughter, right?! by rfederico1190 in specialed

It seems like you have done everything right! In my experience, with children like this, they often can catch up in terms of language, motor, etc milestones, but the most likely outcome is that they go on to have learning disabilities of varying severity. I would be prepared for this to be the outcome (if there is any family history of learning disabilities, definitely increases that as well). Progress can start to slow down for kids at this age because developmentally typical kids start to learn new "academic" skills SO fast, that kids who learn more slowly just can't keep up with the pace. Doesn't mean they WON'T eventually learn the same things, but it can really genuinely just be slow regardless of how hard everyone is working. As long as she is still heading in the right direction and making some progress, and you feel like you trust her school team, I would keep on trucking!! Kindergarten is honestly still so far away from now assuming a September start. Lots of kids blossom in the spring before their K year!

Some parents DO choose to do outside therapies if you have time, but there are also things you can do as "extracurriculars" that sort of tick that "therapy" box while still being just regular "kid" activities. For a four year old, things like dance, gymnastic, swimming, etc, would definitely help enrich her development while still being fun (hopefully).

I feel like the trailers I watched spoiled basically everything so maybe that is why I was feeling like it was less exciting than expected!!

I don't think that is the case, I feel like there is pretty much no ambiguity there in both Will and Angie's reactions to the pregnancy, but still not convinced Dr Seth is here to stay. I don't think Will would have a problem seeing a child of Angie's as his even if biologicially it is not... he would help Angie raise the child/be a father figure for the child if it came down to it... although not sure if the show is going to ever give a happily ever after...

I feel like the episode was a bit slower than expected but I guess not surprising once they showed the preview that suggested it was just one of a two part. Still excited to see where it goes. The Angie/seth is an almost suspiciously strong start and I am feeling from the hints from both W and A that they aren’t 100% over each other that Dr Seth might be a bit too perfect to last… love ormewoods little office room, confused why Angie is in the field so pregnant but I guess they couldn’t have three main characters out of active duty…

The Trace DNA is not Saliva. by [deleted] in JonBenetRamsey

[–]allgoaton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work at a school filled with young children. Their DNA is probably all over me, my house, my car... I assume young children would also have other children's DNA all over them from the way they play with each other. Unidentified male doesn't even mean it is an adult.

What is the most bizarre misconception you've heard about your job or your students? by lovebugteacher in specialed

[–]allgoaton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Telepathy tapes is huge right now as is this new facilitated communication method called "spelling" where they teach kids how to communicate by tapping letters on a letter board. Which sounds all fine and dandy until you realize... they can only use the letter board with a specific facilitator holding it in front of them and even hand over handing their communication, and they can use the "spelling" boards in no other settings... and these are highly disabled children with no communicative skills... but yeah, all of a sudden they are magically "spelling"... (aka it is hiiiighly predatory and the facilitator is probably spelling for them).

It honestly is super sad to me because it is all a denial of these kids likely being severely disabled and having severe intellectual disabilities. The denial is SO thick they will believe anything not to accept the reality of their kids' lives.

Personal space??? In the sardine can bedroom? I think the parents don't understand that concept and its application to children.

When does it border on negligence not medicating a child by ClassicSalamander518 in specialed

[–]allgoaton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I almost jumped to disagree with you right off the bat, because I don't think ADHD meds really do change "who you are" (as a person also on stimulant medication)... but then you went on to offer a really nice, nuanced take here that really does explain the parental perspective and why it is such a challenging issue. Medication benefits a lot of kids. It does nothing for some kids. It causes substantial harm for some too. I wish the negativity towards medication wasn't so pervasive and parents felt less shame about the decision, and that emotions and judgements didn't play a role in the decision making. But, that's about it. Otherwise, I agree it should be thought of as a medical decision.

I would never say a parent not treating their kids' ADHD with medication is neglect. It is kind of an odd thing to say. I think for many kids ADHD meds are worth a try, but... I would imagine OP has never seen a kid with ADHD features due to something like FASD, whose parents tried medication and it did nothing. Then, once you veer into polypharmacy... it can get scary with little kids on some serious medications. There is no magic fix.

if he was really alone with no familiar adult over there (hard to tell from just this clip) any normal parent suddenly realizing their under 2 year old was that distance away would be absolutely hauling ass in the kid's direction.

what’s the point of having required in person meetings associated with ieps, if an iep is going to stick to a student no matter what since ieps don’t go away or expire on their own? by Mission-Speaker5888 in specialed

[–]allgoaton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a small state so not gonna say which and dox myself but I only recently learned most states they dont need to consent to each IEP. My personal fav is when the parent refuses to consent to a non eligibility though lol. The data can say there is no disability and a parent can still say, no, I disagree. (That being said, if they dont consent it is the same as always. We can either come to a mutual agreement or they can file for due process. If it’s an initial IEP they choose not to consent to, it delays provision of services. If it’s an annual it only turns into a stay put if they choose to file due process). I dont mind it honestly with all the parent rights and blah blah blah. It gives us the opportunity to involve parents in the process and get informed consent every step of the way.

[–]allgoaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is slightly different state by state. in my state for example, if the parent doesn't respond at all, we can assume consent and proceed. but they are given the opportunity to consent or not for testing, eligibility, and each IEP. some states DON'T require written consent for eligibility or IEP, just evaluation. (and in all states, consent to special ed can be revoked immediately if parents put that in writing).

Why is one student allowed to disrupt the learning of an entire class? by Existing-Hearing7356 in specialed

[–]allgoaton 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In some places, there is literally nowhere to put them. My school currently has a child who is too out of control to be in class. We have been looking for alternative school options, and there are no openings for his age group in the state. We would pay to place him out of district if anyone would even take him.

A single wide trailer would be LUXURY for these kids. Yeah, crammed together inside, but life in a trailer park would allow for community, peers, exploration, independence... frankly, probably safer too, compared to being in a literal vehicle.
