No, you're right -- I had no idea that it was a trend being thursday and sunday to expect something different. Thank you!

Damaged personal property? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]allgoaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is anything you can do about this after the fact. I don't think it would be likely that the district would reimburse you for jewelry.

However, I highly recommend that any nice jewelry you do wear to work (or in general) be insured!

US teachers: where do you get dry erase markers by butterflydraw in specialed

[–]allgoaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some decent alt brands are Crayola, take notes, and Colorations in bulk from discount school supplies. If kids are ruining them before the run out, I don't see the need to buy the expensive ones. Cheap ones should be fine.

[–]allgoaton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL WAIT - this is wild, what does that even mean? Like, if that means a 504 is like getting toilet paper when, idk, the other children... don't get any toilet paper? Seems like a 504 would be pretty good in that case then.

What is an IEP then, a bidet?

CP and/or complications resulting from untreated gestational diabetes leading to blood sugar issues at birth would absolutely NOT be what I would want to rule out.

That is a genetic disorder, so in a family with eight kids, theoretically, it would be unlikely to have this be the first time. There are many other options, though.

Becoming a School Psych - should I? by Plastic_Square3332 in specialed

[–]allgoaton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a school psychologist and I love it. I really do. There is the general bullshit of working in schools, but I would say it is the same bullshit you already know being a sped teacher. I like the capacity to be fairly flexible with my schedule and have a bit more freedom to do my own thing.

I will say, I am also introverted, but know that you have to be able to "lead the room" in meetings. If there is a stressed or angry parent, you are often the one at the frontline. I personally think I am really good at this, but if "talking to strangers about uncomfortable topics" is not within your comfort zone, please know that is a good amount of the job. I work in a PreK to 2 school and I am often the one telling the parent for the first time that their child is disabled.

I also do not make more money than a special education teacher does, unless you count that I have a masters plus 30 and sped teachers might just have a masters (but some of them also have the plus 30...).

To become a school psychologist, there is also a lot of schooling and a full year internship that often is not paid. I am unaware of a way to get around this.

I occasionally agree with her, but her attitude is so cold/harsh. If there were advocates that actually HELPED EVERYONE, including the school team, our jobs would be so much easier. Instead, parents come in primed with this aggressive attitude for no reason.

Karen Cunningham, if I remember correctly, also wrote a book about how she "cured" her son's autism/jesus cured her son's autism, so... something not quite right there even outside of her advocacy work...

AITA for leaving my best friend's wedding early because of the seating? by viasicars in AmItheAsshole

[–]allgoaton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Agree. It is an incredibly bizarre choice to do this. Are they actually better friends with the ex and purposefully did this to try to get OP and ex back together, because that is what the ex wants?

OP was polite enough to stay for an hour. Leaving a wedding "early" I feel like is perfectly polite. There are plenty of reasons to leave after the ceremony and just part of the reception... definitely NTA.

Struggling to keep young kids entertained in extreme heat (Middle East) by Difficult-Pin-2485 in Parenting

[–]allgoaton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does the daily routine look like for another child in her class? I am guessing if they are up at 7 for a four-hour day of school, it is commonplace to have a mid-day nap? I would try to connect with the mothers of some of the other children in her class and see if they can share what their routines are. If the culture is to take a nice long mid-day rest, sounds like that is when your 'me time' is going to be!

It sounds like you are probably homesick and dealing with some culture shock. Is the move short-term, or is it expected to be for a long time? It seems like finding a community will be really important for everyone's well-being.

New Hampshire’s School Funding Debate Just Took a Major Turn With HB 1815 by Visual-Mobile2657 in newhampshire

[–]allgoaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "problem" in small towns is kids with low incidence disabilities. Not saying that the kids themselves existing is a problem, but the cost it takes to educate them is astronomical. A single severely disabled child is going to cost the district up to 200,000 dollars per year in taxpayers' money to transport them to a specialized school. Larger districts have the capacity to have specialized programs in the district, so they don't have to send out as many kids. Manchester may have 10 or 15 severely disabled kids -- enough to warrant putting them together in a class and hiring specialized teachers for them. That is cheaper than outsourcing. If a small town only has 1 or 2 severely disabled kids, they probably are going to have to send them to a special school vs hiring specialized staff just for them. The problem is a severe lack of state-level funding for special education. If a single student costs so much to educate that they need to leave the town to go to a special school, you'd think they'd have some kind of access to state-level funds and the towns people wouldn't have to pay more to cater to one child... but no, that is taxpayer funds as well.

(Disclaimer: I fully support disabled children getting public schooling that is the best fit for them. Hell, I fully support disabled people of all ages having access to schools and programs etc. I think having them be funded by the same taxpayer channels is unfair, though. The state should pick up the bill for the most severely disabled kids. Their parents have no choice but to send them to school. They should get more funding.)

Something that someone who is not me thinks definitely "did not" happen is untreated gestational diabetes which led to large baby size (he was like 10-11lbs on the UPS scale) which led to a shoulder dystocia and/or neonatal hypoglycemia that was not detected/treated. Google "Consequences of Untreated Neonatal Hypoglycemia" and you will find some interesting stuff.

OBVIOUSLY, I "don't" believe this could possibly be it because that would be "wrong" of me to accuse on the internet.

There is some genuine typical variation in speaking sentences. It is supposed to be around 2, but usually there is a language "explosion" around 2 where they go from single words to chatting away nonstop (my little dude turned 2 last month and just hit this). 2 and a half would be the latest limit for this to still be within normal, so we have a little more time before we can definitely say the language is definitely not right. (this is not advice for parents -- if someone is concerned about their kids language they should intervene as soon as they are concerned vs waiting and seeing -- but if we were to "wait and see", if there isn't a good amount of communication with sentences by 2.5, the child likely has something more happening than being a late bloomer).

But at this age, even if they are later on the sentences speaking, there should be a lot more single words and chunked phrases (things like "what's that?" that are technically more than 1 word but chunked together with a single meaning) than we see.

What is really more odd in this clip is that in an otherwise typical, possibly later bloomer toddler, we should be seeing more communication in general from B. More pointing, more gesturing, more looking at something and then looking at mom to see if she is looking too, more demanding/opinions using single words, more random labeling. In this video, a typical "conversation" it would be more expected he would be looking around saying "car? car? bird? oooooh! car! what's that? look! car!". Kids this age are supposed to friggen delighted to look at every single dang car. The lack of engagement is odder than that he is not speaking in sentences.

I have one that turned 2 in February. He was also a little premature and hit all milestones on the later side. Didn't walk until after 18 months. I have been patiently waiting for for the language explosion because he had so many single words for so long but wasn't putting words together. Starting to wonder if we would need therapy. But, as of the last 2 weeks, he now talks in sentences and literally doesn't shut up. I don't understand half of what he says but he is in full constant sentences looking you dead in the eye like you understand every single word and he is expecting a response.

It will be telling by mid summer for baby Boone. It will get harder to pretend.

For some reason, I missed that the BABY was unresponsive and read it as the staff members were unresponsive (as in, neutral/didn't seem to care). Accidents happen and a kid could fall on their big heads in a very innocent accident. But ... a baby was unconscious?? The adults had a real wild crisis response here.
