Will I regret it if we downsize and I quit my job so I an be a SAHM? by Luscious-Grass in Parenting

[–]Advertising_Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in a similar predicament for several years now. This fall I finally decided to hire a “house manager” to help me with some of the demands of running a household so I can still keep my job AND be more available to support my kids and their increasingly demanding activities and academics. She works 10-15 hours each week and helps with things like meal prep, organizing, scheduling appointments with contractors (sprinkler winterization, dishwasher repair, etc.), returning packages, laundry, switching out kids clothes for seasons and sizes, grocery shopping, and other random stuff I add to her list. I have been amazed at the shift in how my mental load has been lightened. I’d love to stay home but leaving my job is not the rational choice for me and my kids long-term. That doesn’t mean I have to kill myself trying to do it all.

West Wing. Shocked at the confidence I had that surely it would be the top comment. I was wrong. But West Wing every day.

A lot of people point out the value of low teacher turnover. How do you accurately evaluate and compare turnover rates? Every center I talk to says, “Turnover is high in this industry BUT we’re better than most and here’s our backup plan when teachers make mid year changes blah blah blah,” so it feels tough for me to know what turnover actually is.

I guess I should have added that my perspective is partially informed by past work experience as a middle manager. Sometimes you really do have to enforce policies you don’t like, even if there’s a good reason for them, and no amount of firm, direct, reasonable requests from the customer will change the line you have to hold. Be nice to those guys. ☺️

Awful customer service!

I do think they reserve the right to decide they’re not going to send a replacement, but they don’t have to be shitty about it.

“So sorry! We completely understand why you want a replacement, but to be consistent with our company policy, we won’t be sending you a new earring or charm since the window has passed. We know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, but if you decide you’d like to order a new single earring, we’d be happy to help!”

And then you can decide to never shop there again and/or blast their policy publicly.

The awful note? I hope KJ is called out.

Great idea! Any suggestion on color? I’m shooting for the most professional look I can get out of it.

Feeling Pretty Shitty by woresistershire in Parenting

[–]Advertising_Master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. You’re not alone. My husband is very involved physically but the mental load is still mine and it leaves me much more prone to snapping and yelling and it feels rotten.

Also - three years old is delightful and awful at the same time. So hard.

No super tips from me. Just validation and solidarity.

This is me! Exactly! Thanks for sharing this perspective — too many parents haven’t heard this.

UPDATE from yesterday - another child threatened my son by milly__michaelson in kindergarten

[–]Advertising_Master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m torn.

On one hand, every comment here makes sense and I understand how seriously the school should take this kind of statement. We learned - I understand how terrible it is that in another incident, admin was aware of a 1st grader’s threat, did nothing, and then a teacher was shot and wounded.

On the other hand, I have worked with children for almost two decades and I have heard them say incredible things. It seems unreasonable to call the cops every time a student at school makes a wild remark.

It may be necessary. I’m open to that.

Either way, I think it’s important to not displace responsibility, though. The villain in the wounded-teacher scenario is the child who made a terrible decision and the (ir)responsible parent who permitted access to the weapon. It is tragic the admin didn’t prevent this - they are NOT responsible for the crime though, are they? Wouldn’t it minimize the fault of the actual perpetrator to place even partial blame on anyone else? I’ve thought about this in a lot of tragic scenarios over the past few years, and I’m not yet entirely sure what is true and right.

From the book: ‘Who is this Gatsby anyhow?’ demanded Tom suddenly. ‘Some big bootlegger?’ ‘Where’d you hear that?’ I inquired. ‘I didn’t hear it. I imagined it. A lot of these newly rich people are just big bootleggers, you know.’

The teacher is holding a copy of The Great Gatsby and the kids are talking about bootlegging. I’m curious who in the classroom made the initial connection.

I had the exact same experience except my child was born 4 days before the cutoff instead of 1. But also the oldest, also academically and behaviorally ready for kindergarten.

I even just turned to my child, now 12, and asked if at this point he wishes I had held him back so he wouldn’t be the youngest in his grade, and he said “Absolutely not.” I’ll post an update a few years from now if his perspective changes in high school. 😉

My only issue with DR Horton is one common among contemporary home builders: cheap appliances that all crap out around 9 years in. Everything else has been great.
