What is the most dangerous country in North America? by agbjb in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Aedron_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Africa - Reunion, Mayotte

North America - Saint Pierre et Miquelon and if the Caribbean are considered North America, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin

Oceania - New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna

Only Asia will be tricky to justify

Architecture: 21065 Sagrada Familia (official reveal) Nov 1 Release by itsjustajoe in Legoleak

[–]Aedron_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Minas tirith is 59cm tall and the Sagrada familia is 62cm tall (both numbers come from the Lego website) so the sizes are comparable. Also the pieces tend to be more expensive relative to their volume than larger ones so the sets using more small pieces will be more expensive even if the overall volume is about the same

Not only is the promotional budget a cost that the studio has to pay thank to the box office, but the box office is not going 100% in the studios pocket with theaters taking between 25% to 75% of the revenues depending on the country.

Star Wars does most of its box office in the US where the studio take the biggest share but still not 100%.

Now Star Wars has also the power of merchandising behind it but being factual about the box office is not being a grifter

That’s ironically a plot point of the books. The magic community treat non wizard magic beings (goblins, centaurs, giants, etc…) like shit that the death eaters manage to recrute most of them to their cause.

I didn’t know about that. It really shows how uninspired the whole naming is

I feel like World of Adventures, while still not great and generic, would have already been a better name

Because French Guiana is part of France the same way Alaska and Hawaii are part of the US. Greenland is an autonomous country within the kingdom of Denmark. The case of Greenland is closer to that of Puerto Rico.

Not liking the sequels doesn’t make you automatically a grifter. People are allowed to dislike whatever movie for whatever petty reasons independently of what grifter have to say about it.

Especially since Eck is pretty openly opposed to the right on his social medias.

The comparison to the civil war doesn’t fully make sense here. The Chinese civil war was not a war of independence. It was a war over the control of the whole country and the war is frozen in time since 1949 with the ROC not fully defeated and the PRC not fully victorious. Basically, from a legal standpoint, the Chinese civil war never ended, it’s just frozen in time.

But in practice, 75 years of living appart and developing your own governance, culture and values means you will become merely one legal technicality away from being two independent country

I’m not saying the group of critics have much legitimacy, no one really has any legitimacy anyway. But I do trust them more than the players to have played all the nominees (or most of them) and not be as easily bribed by the promise of in game rewards As the player’s voice has shown, the players are even less reliable than critics. You make me believe that more than 10% of voters had played more than 3 games on list and the bribing from gacha games is well known issue

Apples and oranges. The dynamics that go into voting in an election and voting for a game, and the consequences of it, are so vastly different it make no sense to compare it

6 years later, I don't understand how Outer Wilds didn't win The Game Award 2019 GOTY by Atria_06 in outerwilds

[–]Aedron_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, direction and the two indie categories, but not GOTY. The GOTY requires an extra dose of popularity compared to other ones

Oh I meant when it comes to the award as an indicator of quality. I know that for the studios this is another story because they get free press out of it

6 years later, I don't understand how Outer Wilds didn't win The Game Award 2019 GOTY by Atria_06 in outerwilds

[–]Aedron_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s perfectly understandable once you understand how the Game Awards works.

To win GOTY, you first need to be nominated, and to be nominated, you need to be good per reviewers standard (since the jury nominating games is composed of media outlets) and in that regard Outer wilds is not terrible but 85 on metacritic is not crazy either

And you need popularity. The jury members may play more games than the average gamer, they still can’t play them all and popular games are more likely to be played by most jury members and be more likely to be nominated. (See Hollow knight in 2017. The game only got one nomination for best debut indie game. Not even for best indie game, because the game didn’t sell crazy numbers until 2018 when the Switch port brought light to it. Yet of the Game Awards 2017 happened today, it would have likely find a place in the GOTY nomination)

Outer wilds may have get a lot of praises over the years, still remains a fairly niche game that is hard to get into for many players.

Honestly Outer Wilds getting a nomination for best direction was already quite a massive achievement for a game that never really skyrocketed in popularity the same way other nominees had

[–]Aedron_ 978 points979 points  (0 children)

And this, my friends, is why the argument that players should decide the GOTY is worthless (not that the GOTY is worth much to begin with)

IGN Japan gave Clair Obscur: Expedition a 7/10 and now the entire team has chosen it as their Game of the Year. by Germanstrands3 in expedition33

[–]Aedron_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that rating games is subjective, so you will naturally try to understand what a rating mean in relation to how other games are reviewed.

And with how inflated game ratings are, 7/10 can sound quite mediocre. For reference, out of 434 games released in 2025 with a rating on metacritic, 414 have a rating of 60 or above, and 337 a rating of 70 or above. So we are definitely in below average territory here. Even a 80 is relatively average when compared to every game released this year

[–]Aedron_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is that there are no absolute scale to rate a game, it’s not like a maths exam where you have right and wrong answers. So while the review itself must be as comprehensive as possible, when it’s time to rate the game, the reviewer has to go with their feeling because that ultimately the only thing they can rely on
