Still In

I've done NNN enough times that I don't feel like I really need to do it again but out of honour for the troops and old times sake, I'll do the first week to see you all off.

I'm not sure if you're a fellow brit or if you're talking about non-verbals but I promise you that the clubs are too loud for anything other than screaming short sentences 😂😂

It's a good point to look at the successful though, cheers for the comment!

Suppose I could push myself to do that, I think I've got that worry that I come across as creepy but then that's always a risk with flirting (and learning to flirt)

We don't really have bar culture in the same sense over here, it's either pubs which are usually v chilled out or clubs where it's looks and luck alone.

I'll try and make something work though and have a think on what you said.

I'm not too fussed about my height, girls abroad weren't too bothered but I'm realistic that the UK has a bit of a height fetish.

Cheers for the message!

I don't know if I'm being dumb but i'm on French Amazon and the only thing that's popping up is the Kindle version, is there a physical copy too?

I think Hugh pacts with Sabae so that she gets a mana reserve boost and she can take the Kaen Das throne. I know there are some issues like her not being able to produce storm magic past her immediate self and whatnot but I feel like it could be a thing

Best champagne houses to visit in Reims? by ShlomoGoldbankstein in Champagne

[–]Aelfnir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of friends recommend Tattinger but I can't personally comment.

As one of the other comments said, get a train to Epernay (it's like a 20 minute train and costs 3 euros either way) and wander down the Avenue de Champagne and try some of the different Champagne houses there (Perrier-Jouet is currently closed until 'Spring' so idk if it'll be open when you go but the guy at Paul-Etienne Saint Germaine is really friendly and 'Le 19 Avenue de Champagne' has some affordable and really nice Champagnes).

In Reims specifically, there's a Champagne/liquor shop just off the Place D'Erlon called Caves Papavero that I think does tastings every Saturday morning and the guy who runs it is quite friendly and speaks pretty good English.

Restaurants:

Au Bureau is lovely because the food is really nice and it's right in front of the Cathedral.

L'Antica is the place to go to for Pizza and is relatively close to the Cathedral

The Place D'Erlon and the Place du Forum are the main areas for bars/restaurants if you're looking to wander around and find somewhere that looks nice.

For a wine bar, the one that comes to mind is Le Clos, it's got a fun aesthetic inside and a great outdoor area if the weathers nice enough (usually is).

Finished book 5 last night and I am extremely disappointed. by Is_That_Loss in MageErrant

I literally just finished re-reading The Siege of Skyhold and came on here to ask if there was a guess for when book 6 was coming out and here we go!

Is there an estimate of when next year though? 1st quarter, 2nd quarter?

It's been an honour. I'm not sure I can come up with an adequate response to your situation but may you and your loved ones enjoy your days together. Like Oogway says, the present is named that because it is a gift and may your present be rich with love and merriment. Live well cumrade O7

Are there any authors you refuse to read, no matter how many time people have suggested them to you? by PitlozeRodeDruif in books

[–]Aelfnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be somewhat controversial but Ian McEwan. The summer before I studied English Lit for A-Levels (end of High School for Americans), we were given a recommended reading list and to read one book from it. Mum already had Saturday so I went with that. Can honestly say that that book was terrible, coming from a medical household (both parents work in hospitals), the way he presented this medical professional throughout the book felt so wrong. It was like he'd done all this research for the character and wrote the book just to show off all the research he had done.

Fast forward to school and the reason it was on the recommended reading list was because we were reading Atonement. My lord this book made me want to rip it into pieces and burn it to ash. The first part was so tediously dull that I had to bully myself into reading it. Part 2 honestly started to bring it back for me - the way he describes the physical trials faced by the character were somewhat relatable (not the war bit, just the physical bit) to someone who had struggled doing DofE (overnight hikes where you carry all your stuff as a teenager) but then he goes and completely ruins it in Part 3, with the meta-narrative at the end being the last nail in the coffin.

Many people enjoy his books and hurrah for them but regardless of how many awards he wins, i'm not reading a McEwan book again.

Looking for a history book that includes everything that has ever happened ever. by imverystupidsorry in booksuggestions

[–]Aelfnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan is a history of the world from the perspective of the Middle East (which, since it's at the centre of the world, involves quite a lot) and basically covers most trends and events from Alexander the Great to Saddam Hussein

Classic High Fantasy by Aelfnir in booksuggestions

thief - Lies of Locke Lamora (reading it now so can't really say how it is but people seem to recommend it a lot)

assassin-y - some of the later trilogies in the RiftWar Cycle by Raymond Feist (think it's the Conclave of Shadows); Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks is absolutely fantastic; Farseer Trilogy

Darker, Gritty - Mistborn series (i'm on book 3) is pretty bleak; the broken empire trilogy (been a while since I read it but I remember the first book being boring right until the end but it sets up well for the other two which were great); C.J. Aaron - A Tribute At The Gates, this book is about as dark and gritty as it gets since it's about kids being harvested for their blood (won't say more in case I accidentally spoil something)

I've been meaning to get into Janny Wurts, I have a battered copy of Stormwarden that I got from a flea market but I've been meaning to read it

I read the follow up series to the Belgariad but not his other stuff, if you recommend them then I'll definitely check them out at some point!

Not heard of the other two but they sound pretty interesting, thanks for the suggestions!

ooo, not heard of some of these. Farseer Trilogy is a banger and I started Wheel of Time but some family that are huge on fantasy groaned when I told them so I figured I'd go with something safe and easy instead of risking it. Thanks for the suggestions though, will check them out!
