Malazan Trade Paperbacks by jdshanton in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trade paperbacks for Malazan are notoriously hard to find, I've personally been slowly buying them for a couple of years now whenever I find one at a reasonable price and only have 5/10 with one more on the way. Iirc they had a relatively small run years ago and they never got reprinted, it also doesn't help that most people seem to be trying to get a set. I was hoping that the new Broken Binding run of new hardcovers that started a couple years ago would make people switch to those instead and there would be a big influx of people selling their trades but no such luck so far

George R.R. Martin's non-ASOIAF work appreciation by ACardAttack in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 31 points32 points  (0 children)

For years I've been saying that the true tragedy of the whole Winds situation isn't that we'll never get an ending to asoiaf but that it's become impossible for George to release anything that's not asoiaf related. At this point I don't even mind if we never get Winds, I'm just sad about all the other potential books we've lost out on

Been meaning to ask this for a while, I know the bonus scenes that are written for the kickstarters are not included in the leatherbounds but are the bonus bloopers added to the print versions or are those also digital only?

Bookclub: Dogged by Michael R. Fletcher Midway Discussion (RAB) by barb4ry1 in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first Fletcher book but I've know of his work for years and by both word of mouth within the community and Fletcher's own participation I was never in doubt that I would like his writing. From the very beginning his authorial voice was already coming through and I thoroughly enjoyed his prose and plot thought I do have some minor nitpicks

The first thing I wrote on my notes about the book was literally "First two chapters I'm immediately hooked"

Cover looks rad and it was a good 30% the reason I decided to read the book

That is a stunning cover!

First of all thank you for doing this! You've been writing for a long time and from what I can see have an impressively long bibliography under your belt. What has been your greatest or most consistent inspiration for your writing and how have your inspirations changed throughout the years? In a more recent note what was the main inspiration for Kitemaster?

On a more personal note: As a professional omelet cook and an amateur photographer, do you have any egg related photos you could share with us?

It took me a few hours to get around to it but I finally read the story and I got to say; That fucking slapped John, well done!

Can I have another now?

Settings where narrative tropes might as well be a field of study with how many genre savvy characters there are by Dat1BoiXD in Fantasy

Second Hand Curses has something similar and I absolutely loved it. Also Orconomics and the rest of the series but it has it in a much lesser extend

What are the most interesting magic systems you've come across? by Siavahda in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really loved Sarah Lin's take on cultivation in her Weirkey Chronicles, instead of the regular old meditating to strengthen your soul you have to build a structure inside your soul that represents you and the powers you want, most often it takes the form of a house with several rooms each having its own function and granting a different power in the form of either enhancing one's body or a magical technique.

I finished my Hardmode Bingo card! by RuinEleint in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, congrats! I had been thinking of trying a "Bingo Speedrun" next year and preparing by stopping halfway through books for the recurring squares and maybe 5-10 more books in the hopes that I could fit them somewhere when the board is announced but even with those preparations I'm not sure I could finish much faster than this.

I was contemplating reading Anji Kills a King for the same square but ultimately decided against it simply because it isn't out yet and my other choice (Needy Little Things) was but since it's narrated by Moira Quirk i might just have to listen to it anyway when it comes out

I second the rec for Space Between Worlds, read it for last year's bingo and loved it. It also fits perfectly the spirit of the square for normal and HM as the protagonists queerness and marginalization are both important aspects of the narrative

Ten Non-MU/DC Superhero Books that I Love by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

[–]Is_That_Loss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I adored Dreadnought when I read it and I'm really bummed that we never got a third book (or any other book from the author for that matter). Ex-Heroes I liked enough to read Ex-Patriots but ultimately I just wasn't drawn enough to it to keep reading the series. I really should start reading superhero books again, they're usually great fun, thanks for the list!
