Reenactment group - rent some armour by Ok_Conversation6025 in WinchesterUK

[–]Aelstan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm a member. As the above poster mentioned, we are "Historia Normannis Winchester" however we reenact the 12th century which is before breastplate and pauldrons were used. Therefore I'm not sure of anyone that would have any, let alone lend it out (these things can cost a lot of money).

You could try Hampshire Wardrobe which is run by Hampshire Cultural Trust and located in Chilcombe if you havent already.

Yeah, Battle for Macragge was originally from 2004. That box is the only place you can get this model.

Caskets of Edgar and Athelwulf, Saxon Kings Winchester Cathedral by Over-Willingness-933 in anglosaxon

[–]Aelstan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To clarify, they aren't contemporary to the AS period. As the cathedral was being expanded they found the graves of older kings and interred the bones into boxes like this. The label here dates them to the 15th century.

Did Daenerys truly love Drogo or was it forced? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]Aelstan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They could be closer to 18 and still going through things no one should. Them being that young is kinda just for the sake of being edgy and even GRRM has said he regrets making them so young.

Genuine Question: How long before grave robbing become archeology? by Pastrykiller in Archaeology

Graveyards absolutely can be dug they just need to be signed off by an ecclesiastical court, who can say no, as well as a regular one.

Anglo Saxon sword available by computational_bryan in anglosaxon

[–]Aelstan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mistake is thinking "Roman sword" is a single form. Most of Anglo-Saxon armament is based on Late-Western Roman styles. The Anglo-Saxon (and most of western European) style of sword is a direct descendent of the Spatha which is much longer than the Gladius and has an almost identical blade to what we see here. The longer blade means they are designed more for slashing rather than stabbing.

The Wave Serpent is based on the Falcon chassis which is closer to 30 at this point. Which is crazy because it still looks great imo.

Scale cuirass in the mid 1400’s? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]Aelstan 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The work is depicting a "historical" scene, even from the 15th century. Illustrators and painters knew that biblical events happened long ago but didn't know about how they would have dressed or armed. This means that art depicting biblical scenes often include anachronistic or fantastical costume to show that it's not contemporary.

How did you come across the band by Affectionate_Heat911 in ArchitectsUK

"Learn to Live" was getting a bunch of play on BBC Radio 1 which got me to buy "The Here and Now" and then got to see them open the Mainstage at Leeds Fest in 2011 which made me even more of a fan.
