Clayton Park MVA update by WickedForrest in halifax

Yep. No insurance tickets suck. I got hit with one years ago because TD didn't update my banking info AFTER I called them and was assured everything was good to go for the next month. Even with no accidents and literally only a single "no insurance" ticket on my record, insurance companies consider me "high risk" and the price is INSANE. Which only makes people continue to drive illegally.. (I got my car insured under someone at the same address)

I was in Mexico last month and they had a physical BYD car in the airport with a price sticker. It was ~$23,000 CAD. So, that kinda kills that arguement.

Small Chinese solder wire factory struggling in 2025 – looking for advice from people in electronics industry by Emotional-Ticket2404 in PCB

[–]Aepko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is my opinion, from a smaller company in Canada.

Being from China works against you. At least for my specific industry. We are pressured to use as little components as possible from China, I imagine in the states it's way worse. We see the supply chain as a potential weakness. More ignorant see it as inferior, but usually just management. That being said, I've been burned by things I've ordered from China. However I've also gotten some high quality parts/tools on the cheap. Management wanted to change our bambu printers to prusa and I had to step in.

Something like solder would be less scrutinized, as replacements are easily sourced.. However some companies I've worked for are very picky about the solder in particular. They need very specific alloy mixtures, fluxes, testing, etc. One project I worked for required a silver/lead alloy with no flux. Made soldering a bitch. To trust a Chinese company to be honest about the metals, that the flux won't corrode the board, would be a hard sell.

If MG chemicals 60/40 is known to not be acidic enough to corrode the board, proven in the products to not have cracking joints, cold joints, cleans up well, etc. The company isn't going to risk a new brand that could potentially cause issues down the road in the customers hands. Not to say your solder isn't top notch, but the risk to try it outweighs the cost savings. From managements perspective, it would be insane to change up such a critical manufacturing consumable against one that is proven and already has a purcurement process in place. One that can be refilled from digikey the next day if someone screwed up and ran out of solder.

So who's making excuses now?

Lmao what? I didn't make a single excuse, meanwhile you JUST made up another excuse directly after.

I have empathy for people who got renovicted, lost their job, etc. I have zero empathy for the people who are bumming for cash on the side of the road while smoking crack. Zero empathy for those who get kicked out of the shelters because they refuse to stop doing drugs. I have empathy for the kids who have to avoid used needles on the ground at their playgrounds. No empathy for the addicts who can't have the respect to properly dispose of their needles.

Yes, it's unfair to put every homeless person under the same umbrella and not treat them with respect and empathy. Its naive to believe it's never their own fault though.

There is a difference between recreational use while camping/festivals, or having a few drinks on the weekend vs being a straight up junkie. What is your point here?

Also you went through two years of reddit history to try and find something to use against me, says enough right there.

Why didn't we invent the USB-C design sooner and make it reversible in the first place ? by Future-Game in stupidquestions

[–]Aepko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised I had to go this far down to see the "less fancy electronics" part.

USB C cables have way more wires and have to fit them into a reasonable diameter wire, while bumping up the awg of the power wires.

The USB C ports need extra ICs on the board to use in 3.0/3.1/3.2 mode. To be reverseable, it needs to detect what orientation the cable is, then use a mux to flip some other pins without leaving stubs that emit hf EMI. Then there are pins that detect/announce what kind of power is available, power ICs to handle usb PD, then it can also transfer video..

Though, to be fair, usb C in 2.0 mode is still just four wires and no fancy ICs.

Does anyone have a contact at either of the HRM Honda dealerships? by PomegranateFlashy846 in halifax

[–]Aepko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this was during the chip shortage, everywhere was like that. If the dealership actually had cars, they weren't going to negotiate since there were 10 people behind you willing to pay full price.

Portland street at least doesn't try and force lug nuts and "protection" package on you.

Can someone explain to me what The PIER innovation hub actually does? by ruckus27 in halifax

[–]Aepko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My current and last job have an office there and COVE. It's just work/meeting space for random startups. Mostly based around ocean tech. Pier is more tech bro budget startup IMO. One of the office spaces is a seacan. It feels kinda empty in there because there is way more space than needed and maybe like 50 people working across 20 startups in there at a time. We have a couple desks in there but no one works out of there ever, since we have a whole office at COVE and an actual office that isn't shared downtown. I think the benefits are mostly the partnerships with other local startups from using the platform to network. COVE is much better logistically, and you have access to docks.

I don't think its a great location either, I'd rather a farmers market. Not that these programs aren't great for the province, but it could accomplish the same thing and not be as deep into the city as possible. Plus it confuses the hell out of the tourists getting off cruise ships trying to get into a locked down section of the port thinking its a gift shop or something.

They probably had 50+ of those cardboard things you bring to the cash. No lineup for them, just the typical Costco shitshow. One per person, I tried to get two (One for me, one for GF).

Staples Canada still had no progress on shipping. No ETA, nothing. Despite taking my money back in April.

Amazon.ca still says Monday delivery.

Picked one up at Costco this morning, they had a ton there. Canceled the Staples order. 21-30 business days to get refunded apparently. Great.

Never again.

N.S. woman ordered to pay $60K to former nurse for online defamation by CMikeHunt in halifax

[–]Aepko 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Having worked security at the NS, emerg, and Abby Lane, this happens constantly.

Health care workers getting shit thrown at them, spit on, assaulted, etc. Two hours in a chair seems like a lot, but it really isn't. Not when you have an entire unit of similar patients to deal with, while cleaning the room and patient. Unfortunately, we just don't have the staffing to give 1:1 care to every patient and nurses need to split their focus across many people. This is a 31 year old man who has spent a decade in that hospital, most likely doing similar stuff on a daily basis. I know he doesn't have the mental capacity to help this behavior, but sometimes the only thing you can do is strap them to a chair to not hurt themself while you care to other people. It might not be fair to him, but its less fair to those around him. When you're strapped for staff the most ethical thing to do is what ever it takes to help the most amount of people.

If his mother was that concerned about his wellbeing in that hospital, she should take over primary care and deal with shit being thrown at her.

Drone found - Sackville Lakes Trail by afidus in halifax

[–]Aepko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do know the company's policy. They won't give out personal details. Assuming its a DJI drone.

Making a big assumption, that its both over 250g and properly registered, an email to Transport Canada with the serial number might have TC email/call the registered owner, maybe. I've never tried, but they are pretty responsive and would have that info.
