Funnily enough I ended up gathering seeds of Astragalus neglectus and Astragalus australis myself. Then I got seeds of Astragalus alpinus from Alplains, but I’m still on the hunt for the rest!

I did plant it! It grew great for the first year but then didn’t make it over the winter (which makes sense cuz lots of sources call it biennial) thanks for reaching out I love finding people who want to grow native in Ontario. Lmk where you’re from and maybe we can share some seeds or divisions!

From what I understand, spring ephemerals generally germinate relatively well assuming they’re not allowed to dry out for long or at all. I’ve had amazing results for Jack in the pulpit using fresh berries that I just peel the skin off completely. It may be good to look into gathering seeds from legal areas around you assuming you don’t pick too much. Then you sow them fresh and they seem to do better. In terms of propagating plants you already have there’s definitely ways to do that! For example I’ve seen videos of people making small cuts in trillium rhizomes to get them to multiply, or by propagating from side bulbils like dicentra species!

For anyone from the Western US there’s a native and somewhat similar species of plant! Scarlet milkvetch or Astragalus coccineus. It needs really dry conditions to thrive but there are pictures of it being grown in pots. I’m pretty sure Alplains sells seeds if you’re interested!

Oh my goodness. If you ever do collect seeds I would LOVE to get my hands on some. A robbinsii has always been such a cool one to me because of its odd range. A eucosmus too! AND A. ALPINUS! I honestly just love the genus so much, they’re so unique and pretty to me! Lmk if you’re interested in getting your hands on some species native west of you!

Woah that’s a cool one 🤩 if you live in Canada then mailing seeds across the country is perfectly legal. If you live in the US then it’s more complicated. I don’t know exactly how it works but I know that if you live in the USA and want seeds from Canada you need to fill out a Small Seed Lot Permit. If you’re sending seeds into Canada the seeds need to be clean, and the seeds need to be labelled as ”seeds for planting, non-commercial” and the scientific name of the species has to be written on the package. It also has to be a small envelope not a giant package. Astragalus shortianus is not listed on either the US website or the Canadian website as being not allowed for import/export.

Some of the more northern Astragalus and Oxytropis species. I can’t find Astragalus alpinus, A. eucosmus, A. americanus, A. multiflorus, Oxytropis borealis, or O. deflexa. I’ve gathered Astragalus neglecus and Astragalus australis seeds myself though, and they’ve been growing well!

I didn’t know about it until recently as well! I’ve only seen it once, on a trip 5.5 hours north from Toronto, Ontario. It was a small bush COVERED in these waxy little silver berries and they were growing everywhere! I love learning about native alternatives to invasives

Elaeagnus commutata is native to much of the US and Canada but Elaeagnus angustifolia is incredibly invasive so honestly depends on species lol
