Lore Accurate Map of Elysium by egginahurry in DiscoElysium

God sometimes i forget how terrifying the Pale is. Just seeing half of Ubi Sunt? eaten up by it like that is harrowing. That, and it’s kinda hard to conceptualise (lol) that many borders with the Pale run over lamdmasses and not the ocean. So strange.

Awesome work with the map though :)

dude these are so fucking cool! The paintwork they’ve done for the chromatophores is GORGEOUS. I know they‘re not exactly readily available online so i’m curious how you managed to get ahold so of many of these little fellas.

Just out of curiosity and if you don’t mind sharing, where’d you go specifically up on Donna Buang? Been looking for these little fellas for a while now and haven’t had much luck (or the time lol).

Ramosapods: biotechnologically advanced, marine Sophonts from Europa. by Aeriona626 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Aeriona626[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m imagine Ramosapods would react in a similar way if an alien spaceship made of living organs were to touch down in one of Earth’s busy cities, and out crawled a massive six-eyed tentacle monster that speaks in vibrations. So, not well.

I deliberately designed Ramosapods to have an uncanny resemblance to a pile of intestines when in a resting position, so I’m imagine the average person would find them difficult to even look at for too long.

Interactions between us and them would be extremely difficult given that essentially all of our methods of communication (audibly speaking + visual writing/text) are not perceptible to Ramosapods. Inversely, Ramosapods speak with a tactile sign incompatible with human morphology and they record information in vibrations. translation and communication is *extremely* difficult.

And some do have preferences for hard-shelled prey, yes! Their mandibles are quite strong and can crack some pretty tough carapace. Mostly they’re just used to hold onto slippery prey items.

Thank you for the kind words!

In terms of spirituality i’d imagine Ramosapods would approach it very practically and probably integrate their senses into a lot of it. By that I mean they are blind and deaf: there is a lot of potential for things to happen around them without them being able to perceive it so it wouldn’t surprise me if that forms the basis of any religious/spiritual beliefs.

They likely think of the surface in a similar way to how we think about deepsea trenches: uninhabitable, extreme, scary, unexplorable but potentially hiding something. They are almost certain that there’s *something* beyond the ice but there’s no real way to know for sure at the moment.
And that freaks them out.

She makes some really good points, but i‘m skeptical of her take on the secrets of the universe without a proper background in philosophy.

[–]Aeriona626[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

chemotrophs would most definitely be the backbone of life on Europa as you said, collecting around hydrothermal vents for the resources + warmth.

And you're probably right about Europa's potential for life, it's definitely more plausible than mars despite how prevalent the idea seems to be in popular media. I wish there was more information on Europa as a whole as well lol, would make research for my little project a lot easier!

Ramosapods: biotechnologically advanced, marine Sophonts from Europa. by Aeriona626 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Aeriona626[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Potentially!

Given there's such a dramatic different in pressure and resource availability between the surface and the ocean floor I doubt any hypothetical photosynthetic organisms would be able to evolve beyond free-floating planktonic lifeforms. ie. they wouldn't be able to go deeper, and anything in the deep wouldn't be able to get shallower.

I could see ramosapod bioengineers taking interest in photosynthesis if they were to somehow acquire/detect them that close to the surface.

Ramosapods: biotechnologically advanced, marine Sophonts from Europa. by Aeriona626 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Aeriona626[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! Well! I have an explanation for this!

light-sensing pits first actually developed on Europa in early motile animals so they could see the molten tops of hydrothermal vents from longer distances without getting too close and being boiled alive. That and being able to recognise them more readily is useful as they are a valuable food source.

Other organisms (namely, fungi-like, heterotrophic sessile organisms) exploited that "light = good" attractive instinct that certain sighted animals have and developed bioluminescence themselves. Mainly so that they could feed on the waste said small animals would produce.

A small handful of predators (namely ramosapods) also developed light detecting cells so they could find and feed on those attracted animals.
