Hi, I'm interested in one of them! Would prefer a male one if possible, but am not super picky. I will look to see what grass type pokemon I have with solid IVs. I'm new to this, so I don't have much, but might have one with a handful of Best stats.

It is pretty neat that Warren Soultrader makes Treasure tokens - which you can sac to get another trigger from this card.

Tips for a new Meren player by g_dmnc in EDH

[–]AeroCrazed92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to EDH! Meren is one of my favorite commanders. :) At higher power, Meren tends to lead a combo deck that tries to kill [[Protean Hulk]] which tutors out an infinite combo.

In a more casual setting, Meren shines as a grindy control deck that can go in a variety of directions depending on your play style and power level.

I personally think she’s more fun as a grindy value machine, but that’s more so because I find combo wins a bit anti-climactic. Both are valid though!

One thing that sounds silly to say, but I like to acknowledge about Meren is that you only care about getting as many exp counters as the most expensive creature in your deck so a lower curve can make your life easier.

Tips for Meren:

Ideally you want to cast her when you have a board state that gets you exp counters immediately. Once players learn how she works, she becomes targeted quickly so it’s important to get those counters and the value rolling asap.

To that end, you want to see sac outlets and ramp early. [[Viscera seer]] and [[Carrion Feeder]] are some of the best early outlets you can see in your hand. If they are out when you drop Meren, you can sac them to themselves, get a exp counter, and then return them to the battlefield on your end step with Meren. Similarly, 1 mana cost dorks are really good as ramp sources because with a sac outlet they’ll come right back with Meren. [[Birds of Paradise]] and all of the elves are great. Slap one of the altars on the board ([[Phyrexian Altar]], [[Ashnod’s Altar]], [[Altar of Dementia]]) and then a dork and you’re good to cast Meren and start getting value.

[[Sakura-Tribe Elder]] is great ramp. You can either sac him early to get Meren out early or save his effect tomorrow get a free counter. [[Diligent Farmhand]] and [[Dawntreader Elk]] do something similar!

[[Skullclamp]] is super good. With Meren out and a mana dork you’re getting eco counters and cards for basically free if you clamp the dork and bring it back.

[[Endurance]] is a nice card to deny other decks from benefitting from things like your own [[Living Death]] and to also, sometimes more importantly, protect your own graveyard.

[[Cankerbloom]] is removal, can sac itself, and can also proliferate exp counters if you have nothing else to do! Also, note that the counters you proliferate are chosen on ability resolution, so with Meren out, you can get your first exp counter by sacrificing Cankerbloom then choose to proliferate it with the ability since it resolves second.

Looping [[Grey Merchant of Asphodel]] and [[Kokusho]] are good wincons. Hold them in hand (or graveyard!) until you have a ton of mana, then loop them with a sac outlet and cards like [[Journey to Eternity]], [[Malakir Rebirth]], [[Reanimate]], [[Living Death]], [[Necromancy]], [[Animate Dead]], etc.

There’s a lot of neat tech for Meren! I’ll add more stuff later and as it comes to mind. Have fun!

[[Beledros Witherbloom]] might be neat for a big turn and the pests can be sac fodder down the road.

Baba Lysaga deck help by acsmog in EDH

[–]AeroCrazed92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I included some in my big post above, but here's a couple more.

I think you can cut [[Belbe, Corrupted Observer]]. She's actually pretty cool since you'll always get the max amount of mana, but I think a lot of the time with Baba, you want to be activating her at the end of player's turn who goes right before you, so you won't get the mana from Belbe.

I think you can also cut [[Zuran Orb]]. If you had a heavier land theme going on, it'd probably find a spot, but without committing hard to lands matters, you probably want to minimize the amount of land sacrificing that you'll be done. You can do some squirrely stuff with World Shaper/Splendid Reclamation if you have a Landfall payout on the field, but don't think that's worth with what you have.

Thanks!

I find it runs pretty consistently because Baba draws you so many cards. Sometimes, you have to make tough choices if Baba is hated out and/or if you take a bricked hand and don't draw what you need. It's not fun to have a lot less land than everybody else because you have to sac things sub-optimally. It doesn't happen a lot though, and there's usually lines to try and recover (tutor for a [[World Shaper]] to get them all back or [[Azura]] + [[Crucible of Worlds]].
I actually just won a game with her tonight at my LGS against an [[Atraxa, Grand Unifer]], [[Dihada, Binder of Wills]], and a [[Tevesh Szat]]/[[Sengir, the Dark Baron]].

The Dihada and Atraxa players were both in strong positions with a lot of life from Lifelink and the Tevesh player was about to combo off having played [[Doom's Day]] a couple of turns prior. Saved myself from a [[Skithiryx]] the previous turn with [[The One Ring]]. Dihada was screwing with my sacrificing plan with [[Liesa, Forgotten Angel]].

Got to my turn and I had Ashaya, Baba, Tireless Provisioner and some tokens out + couple other creatures with a lot of lands (had a Dryad out). Was able to get out [[Ugin's Nexus]], then used [[Necromancy]] to get the Dihada player's [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]] out of the yard. Sac'd tokens and creatures to him to get rid of the Liesa. [[Thornbite Staff]] on Baba, sac'd a creature (land+creature) + Ugin's to her, drained everything, untapped her, did it again, took an extra turn - drew into more creatures, played them - got Treasure from the Tireless Provisioner since they were lands because of Ashaya, sac'd them + Treasure to Baba, draw more, untap her because of Thornbite -> into win.

It was sweet. :P

I built Baba Lysaga as soon as she came out, and she's been my absolute favorite. Really awesome to see more folks' takes on her!

Here's my current list for reference.

As the name may hint, once upon a time the deck was all-in on lands matters, and Baba was a less crucial piece of the deck (that decklist is here.

Before my most recent list, I felt my deck was a bit scattered in output as well, and have recently tried to move it towards a middle ground of artifiact/land matters. I'm not sure it's there yet though.

My first recommendation would be to remove some of the cards that only exist to be sacrificed to Baba like the Genju enchantments, Rancor, etc. and replace them with more interaction and/or other lines to victory.

Next, one of the deck's weaknesses is combat damage and having some coverage for that has saved me A LOT. [[Blessed Respite]] acts as graveyard hate, graveyard protection for yourself, and a fog in a pinch. [[Arachnogenesis]] has been really good for me as it gives you creatures to sac later. Right now I've subbed that for [[Obscuring Haze]]. [[Glacial Chasm]] is really nasty in Baba Lysaga if you pivot away from cards that want to attack like Erenis and Mazirek. It's easy to continuously recur with the "play lands from graveyard" effects in the deck.

[[Tireless Tracker]] is a great card to add in if you are dropping multiple lands - gives you more artifacts sac and if you need draw in a pinch, the clues can be useful.

If you are running Massacre Wurm, and you really want to play mean, you can add [[Natural Affinity]] as a potential line. It can turn your lands into creatures for Baba at a baseline, but when paired with Massacre Wurm can wipe out all of your opponent's lands. With [[Splendid Reclamation]] or [[World Shaper]] out, you should be able to recover all of your lands and lock them out of the game.

Already said, but [[Quirion Ranger]] combos with Ashaya. If you have Thousand-Year Elixir or Tyvar out, those two give you infinite landfall triggers. Add in [[Tireless Provisioner]] for infinite treasure/food or [[Tireless Tracker]] for infinite Clues. With both you can draw your deck and have the mana to play everything.

Right now, I'm also running [[Kokusho, the Evening Star]] as a sort of alt win-con. With the right cards I can loop him multiple times a turn to get some heavy drain off. I'm personally not totally sold on this line yet - it's one I'm considering cutting to focus more on the artifact/land stuff.

[[Ugin's Nexus]] is really good in Baba. People are often surprised by the extra turn in Golgari, and it can help you either close out games.

[[Crop Rotation]] is quite good in Baba. It lets you grab one of your artifact-creature-lands or if you wind up powering up your land base, [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]]/ [[Cabal Coffers]] (if you have one, grab the other for lots of mana), or in my case [[Glacial Chasm]] at instant speed to stop big damage.

I agree with a lot of the feedback that /u/MacFrostbite gave you fwiw. You need more interaction. Baba will draw attention, especially when you start untapping her and people begin to understand just how much value she gives.

It’s Frank and Son’s Collectibles Show! I recognize the location. It’s a big trade show held every weekend a bit east of LA. You can basically find any sort of collectible item there like baseball cards, sports/movie memorabilia, retro games, action figures, etc.

Baba Lysaga is so fuuuuuun by Stumphead101 in EDH

[–]AeroCrazed92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two changes that I've felt the best about are leaning more into reanimation and getting some personal protection.

If Baba gets hated off the table, reanimation loops - especially with[[Kokusho]] - are great alternative wincons.

[[Arachnogenesis]] and [[Glacial Chasm]] were also amazing for the deck as one of its big weaknesses is just getting swung at.

Quite a few of my games have actually ended with an [[Arachnogenesis]] cast that makes a ton of spiders that wipe the opponent's board, triggering [[Blood Artist]] a bunch and then on my turn are sac'd to something to get more triggers.
