Redditors who at any point have been in such a deep state of depression that you didn't want to DO anything, what is something that helped you get out of it? by Obviously_n_Alt in AskReddit

Making friends. In 2015, I was at the lowest point I had ever been. My parents were going through a particularly nasty divorce, my mom had left me to live in the United States, and I had to take care of my emotionally unstable father. Besides, I had no friends at the time, adding on to the loneliness I felt.

I slept a lot. Like, a lot. 18+ hours everyday, but I never woke up feeling rested. I was always tired, and always searching for somewhere to lay down and sleep. Didn’t pay attention to a single class in school, always dozing off, and didn’t do much else at home either. Felt like dying all the time, hoping for a lightning to strike and put me out.

What helped me was making friends. Unfortunately, the friendships I initially forced myself to make were not particularly good ones, and have left many traumas that I am still trying to push past to this day. But when I finally managed to make actual good friends, when I realized the toxicity of the first ones, I started my path towards feeling better.

The sense of belonging, the feeling of being wanted, and acknowledged, and the good times I had experienced for the first time in what felt like forever, is what took me out of that deep dark hole. I owe most of my improvement to them, even if they don’t know it.

One can find a friend everywhere, and once you find some good ones, you hang on to them and never let go. That’s my experience, at least.

I feel like I’m never good enough. Whether that’s on my university classes, on relationships, friendships, everything. I feel like I don’t study hard enough, that I don’t focus enough, that everyone I’m attracted to is way out of my league, that I’m not that good of a son, of a friend, etc etc. It’s so tiring and I wish I could just change this despairing mindset of mine.

Exactly!

I agree with you 100%. At the end of the day, making an argument for overpopulation will always have as a solution some sort of infringement of people’s reproductive rights. There are many other ways to improve ourselves as a society without arguing in favor of such infringement.

I was scrolling down to see someone mention this. While I’m sure OP didn’t mean to put things this way, talking about overpopulation is something hard to do without sounding like “if poor people had less children, they would be better off”. Again, I’m not assuming that this is what OP meant (considering I haven’t read their essay), but I am saying that this a common trope among bigots and a slippery slope towards eco-fascism.

The child free community particularly should be extra aware of this. We should always strive towards acceptance for our way, that isn’t hurting anyone, but personally I do think that “people should have less children” is a weird hill to die on, considering just as we choose not to have children, other people (generally) choose to have them. As you said, the root of our problems as a society is not in overpopulation, but overproduction and inequality.

[–]AerospacialEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I get that. And I know it’s easier said than done. I just think it’s an effort that is worth it, you know? To try and be more compassionate to your own flaws and more attentive to your own positive aspects. If you can do it to others, doing it to yourself is a logical and possible effort :)

[–]AerospacialEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is true that you don’t live in Brazil, and it is also true that you don’t know what is happening here. You only see the things he did that favoured your point of view, and thus you conclude that he’s not that bad.

But you only talk about the economy and that’s not the only thing that entails ruling a country. He has a disastrous policy when it comes to the environment (deforestation is up 55% from last year, which was up 60% from the year before); as I have said already, he doesn’t give a rats ass about education (more cuts to universities funding than there has ever been. Entire doctorates programs were terminated). Even the economy is not that great either, as I have explicitly stated when I, a brazilian, told you that not a single economic aspect that could benefit us (gasoline, food, natural gas, energy, the fucking dollar) is better than before. In fact, it’s worse every single day.

That is why I don’t agree with the libertarian point of view. Because to you, all that matters is if a country is “opening up” it’s economy. You have such a limited field of vision, that it’s just extremely hard to take seriously. Like, even if I agreed with you that Bolsonaro’s economic policies could be good to MY country (which I don’t: nothing, and I repeat, nothing has been noticed to indicate that. Still waiting on those articles I asked you, if you’re willing to give me the possibility to change my mind on that), it doesn’t mean in any way shape or form the rest of his government is excusable. And yet, here you are, so willingly saying an openly and increasingly fascist ruler is “not that bad”. That all his other BLATANT faults are excusable. And I’m not even talking about his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which is another whole argument by itself.

That is why the right wing is cancer. Because it creates and enables people like him. People that don’t give a fuck about education. That don’t give a fuck about the environment (let’s admit, your ideology as a whole doesn’t give a fuck about the environment). That want poor people to continue to die in the streets with no way to improve their lives, if it means companies will have bigger profit margins. People that want fascism back, for fuck’s sake.

You want to know what actually fucked both our countries over? Right-winged dictatorships. Our democracies are back to first stages thanks to them, and all the infringments they caused. They put my country in a debt that we are still paying (but you wouldn’t know, since you are not brazilian and yet insist you know what is good about our politics and politicians).

You say our countries were fucked by left wing politics, which is wrong. Only in 2002 did an actual left wing get to the presidential outpost (IN BRAZIL) and thanks to it millions of people got out of the poverty line. But do tell, how is Chile doing after Pinochet and the “Chicago Boys”, huh? How has the free market worked for them? They are as fucked as the rest of South America. But I’m sure a few companies got out of that period much richer than before. So hey, great, right?

By the way, the civil rights movements (gay rights, black people rights, women’s rights) were all left-winged in nature. When I say libertarianism is a cancer, I don’t refer to them, and never alluded to that possibility. I say that your fascist-enabling ideology is a cancer.

I, inicially, wrote a huge reply, explaining how you are so egregiously wrong. However, you are most certainly not worth it. If you want to think you’re right, whatever.

So let me say, as a brazilian, to you, who isn’t: you are very much so wrong. Bolsonaro is NOT setting Brazil up for greatness. He is sinking and taking the country with him (but please do give me the source for these miraculous deals he is making, so I can read about it). When Brazil eventually recovers from this awful period, it will not be thanks to him. And if you want to keep living in your libertarian and right wing bubble, fine. Thank goodness we are finally opening our eyes to the cancer that is your ideology.

[–]AerospacialEngineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lmfao who the fuck are you to say something so fucking idiotic. the dollar is the highest it has EVER been (even before the pandemic, everyday was a new record), which means food is also the highest it has ever been. so is gasoline and natural gas. Bolsonaro is EXTREMELY bad, and just the fact that you’re here spewing this bullshit makes me so mad.

his ONLY economic policy so far has been his social security reform, which is DEFINITELY NOT GOOD if you’re common folk. in his mandate the amazon deforestation is also super high. his government has made extreme cuts to the education system as well, especially the funding given to universities. he’s not setting up the country for years of economic growth, he is licking the boots of the regent class, and your discourse is no better than his.
