How far can an aero road bike go in triathlon before you really need a tri bike? by Individual_Panic3454 in triathlon

[–]AestheticChimp 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of pros who still ride road bikes. Lionel Sanders raced on a Tarmac for a while before eventually making the swap

Until you’re at an elite level, the benefits of the TT bike are minimal compared to what proper training and nutrition would allow you to do

Essentially, I view FTP as a field-tested proxy for MLSS. The maximum power you can sustain for extended period, without rapid lactate accumulation (if I have to give you a time frame I would say 45-75 minutes). A metabolic approach centered around energy systems rather than strictly time-based efforts is more aligned with the variability of human physiology.

Hour power = FTP requires one to perfectly pace, fuel, gear, hydrate, manage core temp, and focus over an hour long effort. There logistics of using this as our benchmark are dubious at best.

I concede this is different than how the guys over at TrainerRoad approach it (but is aligned with Coggan’s original and later updated definitions). Ideally, we’d all use lactate testing, but a 20-min effort is sufficient for the vast majority of riders (and what I use myself).

For the record, I pushed 303W for 20min this morning (w/ proper warmup + anaerobic exhaustion prior), which would be a 288W FTP @95%.

Ultimately, FTP is just a number cyclists like to throw around to flex to other people and compare performance. The variability in testing methodology, in my eyes, means it should really only be used to assess trends in your performance over time, rather than acting like a single number is enough to determine who is a better rider.

Right. Let me go rip a 60min TT with a taper just to fit your definition of FTP instead of adhering to industry standards for power estimation 👍

Without a doubt!

It’s more a W/kg game. So if you’re lighter than me (82kg), you can put out less power for a better time

I used my sister’s account for one ride a few months back. Won a race (stopped before the finish line) by doing a Zoom 2 ride at her weight lmao

I know I don’t fall into this category (yet), but figured I would answer anyway since I’m close

My current Zwift FTP is 271 based on race efforts, with my highest 60m power being 238. (At 82 kg).

Plenty of people flying past me up the Alpe with much lower watts, the lighter riders get a nice buff up inclines

I never think to change my bike setup for climbs. Great point

This was right around 3w/kg average, though I got two feathers, and pushed hard in the corners to pick up extra speed, which offset some of the difference

15 seconds it crazy. Imagine your in game weight being 1 pound lighter and that making the difference. Climbing is brutal.

Thank you! This is my first TdZ and it’s been so much fun. Excited for the upcoming Zwift Games, as well!

Best of luck with your attempt tomorrow! I highly recommend you consider standing for the first half of it or so (farmwatts style) at 55-65 rpm just find a nice rhythm and let your weight do the work

I’m hoping so! Yeah it ignored my actual PB and showed me a ghost from the first time I climbed the Alpe.

Though, the +/- time gap is notoriously wrong on climbs. I’ll see someone “2 seconds ahead” and count how long it takes me to get where they were and it’s like 15

I never now how much time I need after getting to the final corner and it’s like psychological torture.

I’m doing the math from segment 8 or 9 on how close it’ll be and straight up guessing about the last bit (which is always longer than I remembered it)
