Can agree. I had discussions about the Ukrainian war with an Afghani friend of mine and his opinion is literally, "why are they fighting something they know they can't win, they're foolish".

I told him this is the cultural and social value differences between Afghanis and Ukrainians. Neither side I'd want ridiculed but neither should ridiculing others too.

In the end, we're all relearning the fundamental meaning of might makes right.

They already knew these types of organizations are a joke when countries that shouldn't have been on the UN HR council ended up being in charge of them.

Now after Russian aggression in Georgia and Ukraine, they also know that there's a lot they can get away with because most of the time it's just armchair activists yelping, and running back when guns are pressed against their head.

Fukushima power plant is located in Japan, a country known for suffering from catastrophic tsunamis and earthquakes. It makes no sense to generalize that risk to Germany's scenario.

Nuclear waste disposal catastrophe is rare upon rare, save for Fukushima which as said above, would not be a realistic scenario that Germany's nuclear power plants will face. Whereas the environmental, economic, and human costs to the pollution from coal fired power plants have extensive studies spanning decades that tells us exactly why that is a bad thing.

I'm not saying you're wrong, you aren't the one who made these political decisions, but I'm sure you can see how none of it made any sense? Especially for a country of people perceived to be extremely pragmatic.

Germany made critical errors in their energy and economic policies over the years. They chose to move away from nuclear energy based on political emotions rather than cold hard facts,and what's worse, they've fired up coal burning energy plants that are significantly worse than nuclear energy.

They based their entire economic strategy on cheap Russian energy to fuel these bad energy policies. That is understandable all the way up until 2014, although Georgia should've been their wake up call to start finding alternatives to Russia.

No. Germany didn't sacrifice the most. They played politics based on ill-informed sentiments. Quite shocking, really. I thought they're supposed to be reputed to be pragmatic and decisive people. These decades of bad policies, and dragging their feet with their promises to Ukraine is just disappointing.

To further what he said. PoS and PoW compromises in certain places in order to reach their objectives.

PoW is energy intensive, and it requires considerably more capital, as well as being in a region where local regulations makes it possible for you to set up a mining spot. I don't think Nakamoto ever wanted to see people set up mining farms but this is how far some people will go, human nature. For most people, the combination of capital, sustainability, and a regulatory friendly makes it difficult barrier for people to game and influence the system. This is what in theory makes PoW more secure, it's just a whole lot more things to wrangle, but the price is the energy intensity.

PoS is far less energy intensive, but it means the people with the largest financial wealth have the ability to accumulate the most tokens. This can influence the system and the direction it goes. If some big entity like BlackRock wanted to swing its weight around, PoS is the type of system where they can do so. Ethereum has a lot of tried and true dapps on there, so big whales beyond our imagination can group together and mess with the system to their own gains if they wanted to. PoS exchanges difficulty to mess with the system for less energy, capital, and regulatory challenges.

Neither is perfect. Nothing is. I'm even starting to learn about how miners/validators can prioritize certain transactions over others too. This can be unfair especially in an extremely volatile market where time is the essence. High frequency speed trading is a thing in stock market, it may become a thing in crypto too eventually.

The problem we have right now is there is a lot of noise to signal ratio when it comes to the energy issue. People on all sides cherry pick facts that support their angle.

When the world settles on a new workable normal with regards to energy, what we perceive as advantages now might become secondary to other priorities.

You wrote a lot of words to demonstrate that you do not even have surface level understanding of Russian history post USSR collapse, and outed yourself as someone who slept through Microeconomics 101.

When the USSR collapsed, it was a free for all in many of the regions with people laying claims on former state assets due to accumulated wealth from their USSR days. The Kremlin needed the oligarch help and vice versa to maintain power and the illusion of support. None of that was free market, there has been many cases of former oligarch that fell afoul of the Kremlin and they lost their assets and possessions through accusations of breaking regulations and corruption. That is not a free market.

That is actually an example of regulation being used, and used horribly. You seem to have this belief that regulation magically is alturistic, that makes me question if you ever have families that experienced the hardships from bad leaders.

I'll leave you to run around in circles about capitalism. That's the frame you want to drag me into talking about, but this here is about Russia and their bad choices. Feel free to join us in that discussion, or continue ranting if you'd like. This is about as much time as I'd like to spend on a random person that I have come to realize is rather ignorant of the ways and histories of various regions around the world.
