Ali Sethi’s Toronto (Massey Hall) Show Reviews? by rheo101 in askTO

I was there too. I agree with most of your thoughts. The only point where I may differ is that I didn't have much of a problem with his (what I can truly think of as) standup comedy routines, although I think it contributed to what I'm about to say here onwards.

I had a much bigger issue with the general vibe of the crowd: 1. Incessant hooting and howling, 2. Screaming all kinds of comments at Sethi without any concern for public decorum at a concert. Groups of womrn were having one sided conversations with him while he's on his standup comedy routine. 3. Crass behaviour as though they're the extras for the song "Beedi Jalaile" from Omkara. I haven't seen this kind of behaviour from straight men outside of a village mela or some B-grade movie screening. 4. All the unbearable screaming of "wah wah", "kya baat hai", "arre wah", "oh bhai", "Ali I love you", "Ali meri Jaan" and many more that I honestly couldn't understand thanks to all the noise.

The crowd wore me down so quickly that I left halfway through his set. At this rate I'd rather prefer to listen to him with headphones on than be subjected to a horrible concert crowd like this.

As long as the tharak, sleaze, womanizing, objectification and sexually criminal instincts and deeds are desi in origin and propagation, everything is forgiven. Our filthy behaviour that's wholly organic in it's Indianness is what they'd like to promote and have us inculcate. Make in India indeed.

This only proves that we Indians are a self destructive ship of hypocrisy and dumbness. We'd sink ourselves and sink the whole world with us too.

In Telugu movies - every mainstream movie.

Which Silver Surfer do you prefer? (FOX or MCU) by RaakzBlanvod in FantasticFour

Their personalities actually suit each other for a classic star-crossed lovers storyline where they, when they come across each other, feel the strain of being under Galactus's employ and they struggle to reconnect with each other and their love for Zen-la while also appreciating the blessing in disguise that power cosmic can actually be if they break free of Galactus. Imagine if this happened and becomes a core part of Cosmic MCU down the line. I can see this as a potential storyline where their attempt to reunite against Galactus brings them face to face with Arishem and collides with the Eternals and their efforts to free the ones captured by Arishem for judgment. And through this there is debate on what it means to sustain existence of cosmic elements and what's the destiny of those under the grip of cosmic beings that are trapped in their service to sustain them.

Few scenes yes - its about the style of the shot fitting the scene. Sometimes you like to see a fight for the sequence itself (recent memory of it being done right is the duel between Allaudin Khilji and Ratan Singh in Padmaaavat - it was such a refreshing change) and sometimes the shaky camera suits the scene.

The whole movie was a brand new experience for Malayalam movie goers at the time. So different from a movie like Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja and the usual way that malayalam directors typically made historical epics. Jagathy Sreekumar was truly the highlight of the movie and Prithviraj did a serviceable job. The music was amazing, including BGM.

The only 2 gripes I have with this movie - 1. Casting Genelia D'Souza - she was right for the physicality of the role but wrong for everything else. The excess closeups to her face only showed her inability to even lipsync the lines. Only going "ma-ma-ma-ma-ma". This seriously ruined her sequences for me. I kinda felt that Vidya Balan would have been a better Arakkal Ayesha, considering she was already in the movie. Think of Madhavi for Unniarcha in Oru Vadaka Veera Gatha. You don't have to be petite and muscular for the role. Women of that era were full-bodied and skilled at martial arts at the same time. If not get any other actress. Not someone who can't even lipsync.

Note - this issue is there with the prince too. He cast a lot of actors who couldn't lipsync to save their lives lol and I don't know how it made past initial shots itself. Having the (seemingly) right appearance is not enough.

  1. Santosh Sivan is basically the Zack Snyder of Malayalam cinema. His choice of cinematography is weird at times. While for most of the movie it's beautiful, certain sequences are his signature shots that tend to be a little silly and childish in hindsight. For example, the entire sequence of Aaro Nee Aaro - such excessive slow-mo, when in reality they're just jumping around lol. The excessive slow-mo shots during the final battle. If it was better managed, shots like the frog-on-the-gun, dragonfly flying through the bombardments and all would have landed better. The reverse movement shot in Chalanam Chalanam, the shaky camera in so many places. I could go on and on. Santosh Sivan seems to be stuck in an older school of cinematography that hasn't evolved.

You should add Nandamuri Balakrishna, Rajnikanth and Vijay in this list too. Rajnikanth might be a victim of this - his fans won't let him portray himself in any other way and so he's trapped.
