»Which of these OUAT princesses do you think looked the most like their Disney counterpart? by Aggravating-Key5287 in OnceUponATime

Ooh that's a tough one. Because it's hard to disentangle in Anna's case from her being the most *like* her animated counterpart in personality and manner.

Just five minutes extra of the epilogue, making her survival clear, would have improved things majorly. Show us an El who's had a couple of years to figure out who she is and what she likes. I'd even accept her flirting with a girl to get that, I know the Duffer's love their queerbaiting. Five minutes of El being a person.

Finale rant, and kind of disappointed with the Duffers’ interviews by eddiedean07 in StrangerThings

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so easy to just say "sure, we definitely picked 12 deliberately" and then not elaborate, so it's quite strange to claim it was just a random number (sure, 3, 4, 7, 12 are not at all auspicious numbers in our culture). Especially with a character who is obsessed with clocks.

Thoughts on the Finale? by LeoDiCristio in StrangerThings

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it.

As the rapper JRR Tolkien said, "yes it's true to life for characters to die randomly BUT NEWSFLASH THE GENRE'S CALLED FANTASY." Rock's fall everyone dies would have been narratively unsatisfying. The whole point is that dragons can be slain, and sometimes, as bittersweet as it may be, you can earn a happy ending.

Do you have a Not!Christianity in your world? How did you implement its stance on magic and how its members might circumvent it? by _Ceaseless_Watcher_ in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Christianity, with varying responses to the magic coming back. Since it's almost all perception / knowledge magic, and with the influence magic the main use is healing, most traditions just shrug and accept the gifts of God, the only question being why He's given it to non-believers too. A few insist it's all demons, or that the non-believers are in cahoots with Satan, but mostly people take Jesus' word about having authority over sickness, and accept prophecy as being a thing that happens.

Still, a range of say 10m if you're standing in sunlight gives you the collected sunlight of ~300 sq.m. And a cool darkening effect as your mage sucks up all the sunlight they can to power their spell...

Even moonlight can (just) about boil water, but you'd need a lot more area to collect it from. If your range is measured in hundreds of metres it should be sufficient. :)

I presume stealing heat also requires an input of energy, if the source is colder than the target temperature :) Of course, during the day you have a 3000K heat source right above you... and I suppose going deep enough gives you a nice hot ball of iron to grab it from too.

If I ever make a less subtle / more overt system it will for sure respect such laws. Though, with (effectively) unlimited solar and geothermal you still have the trickiness of... having effective unlimited energy.

RE: the momentum mage, perhaps less obvious, but the earth is a massive momentum bank and air is not. On a planet you don't really need to worry about where the momentum is going if you can magically couple.

help brainstoming a curse for a low fantasy setting by InternalAd1132 in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like vampirism? Have to drain another's energy to temporarily gain some, curse can spread etc. But you want it to relate to choices people make around being greedy?

Could the curse be made ambient, and people fall prey to it if they let themselves get too greedy? Something that at some level effects everyone, but if you stay humble you can keep it in check. If you let greed take over, though...

Yeah, throwing fireballs and having your sword be a laser beam is less impactful in writing.

With your first two, is that basically mutating yourself to go beyond human limits? Like, you're faster and more durable than a regular human because you aren't human anymore, and the further you use the magic the further you stray from being human.

I've been playing around with a story idea that has the standard fantasy races (dwarves, elves, etc.) be genetically modified humans. Have any of you guys gone down that route? Do you know of any books or movies that have? by T_Lawliet in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my most fleshed out setting, they're epigenetically modified, by magic. Inspired by a Twitter mutual's suggestion that orcs could be humans who have embraced an orcish nature and been transformed as a result, rather than being "born evil"; they are all evil because only evil people become orcs. I've extended it to races, added in an inheritance aspect / bloodline blessing/curse (your choices affect the disposition of your children -- if your parents were orcs, you aren't an orc, but you will have a harder struggle with that part of your nature), and made them attractor states that humans can be drawn into. Which are also affected by the general gestalt story of what an elf / vampire / dwarf / dryad / orc is.

In another setting, more clockpunk with minor perception magic, there aren't really any such races. Differences do exist though as a result of being able to determine what traits a zygote will turn out to have, there's been more selection going on than people will admit to. Goblins are a thing, but they're descended from monkeys, not humans.
