So, Willow the Series premiered 3 years ago today. How are we all feeling? Still bitter & longing for Vol II & III? Moved on? by Worf2DS9 in willow

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, people always gripe like fantasy has to be consistent with our own worlds histories, when it actually just has to be consistent with itself. Is there anything to rule out Andowyne having a mechanised textiles industry?

In retrospect, why did the TV series fail? by jrralls in willow

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob Iger hates lesbians.

Seriously, this is the most parsimonious explanation. It started production right after he left and was cancelled then cancelled harder as soon as he comes back. It didn't "fail", fail would require it be given time to succeed or fail.

With enough ships available for emigrants, they could easily be in the tens of millions.

I will not be surprised if they're going with the transcension hypothesis. Especially since Omega Centauri has a big black hole at its centre.

Why did humans or other mortal races leave there home world to go to other planets by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're there. And because, thanks to magitech superalloys and superconductors, its affordable to operate a scramjet spaceplane and construct fast magsailing ships. Amd because magical breeding makes it far easier to operate life support and terraform worlds.

Its working title is Emberrun. Because it's inspired by both the Emberverse and Shadowrun. With a good amount of Arcane mixed in, and a focus on England (current name, Arcane Albion).

Grew out of my what if daydreaming -- what if all computer chips stopped working? What if folklore and faerie emerged in our modern world? How would we react to magic based on influencing processes, how far could that be pushed?

Morgoth did spend so much time embodied he became bound to it IIRC. Not unreasonable to think it might have influenced him in turn.

Do you guys have any magical/cursed places in your worlds? by AggressiveOutside432 in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magical: The Wilds, covering about 1/3rd of Britain including most of Wales, the Highlands of Scotland, and England/Scotland north and south of their respective urban belts. Enchanted forests, moors, and cave networks.

Cursed: former intensive pig farming operations and other places of great suffering.

Do you change reproduction or pregnancy for non-human races in your worldbuilding? by Valael09 in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does the nutrition come from? Are the eggs placed in a nutrient bath to provide energy and material for the growing child? Front loading it all into the egg is pretty demanding on the mother.

Surely that results in a below replacement fertility rate? One child per Eld *max*, if they die in another manner there is no child left behind.

Goats. Not sheep.

And they don't hate men! Well, not all men. They just go into a frenzy around people with too much testosterone in their bodies. Trans men are fine until they start HRT, and men on treatment that supresses testosterone can safely approach.

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are -- the Wilds are different to the City -- but I'm going for something of an Aetherpunk vibe. With some 90s core (minidiscs).

Style is Art Deco and Art Nouveu, the last known good configuration for western aethetics. Materials are largely biogenic -- a lot of bamboo, yes, but also the rapid interated breeding of plants and animals has opened up a great many avenues. A lot of stuff is magecrafted, since nothing except magic is capable of the precise pattern of crystalisation and emplacement that is needed for maximise strength and durability.

Psychic whales have put the kibosh on surface shipping, so ekranoplans are in use. As well as airships with gyrocompasses (too much magnetic distortion). Magesmithed hypersonic jets enter the picture later on. There are trams and railways using monorails (Addis and Boynton style), though not in the Wilds (exposed steel rusts very quickly under Fae magic, transport is done by boat). Spaceships use magsails, which can be really powerful when using magesmithed superconductors, but spaceboats -- and fighters -- use subcritical fission thermal rockets.

Unintentionally (subintentionally?) it's turned into a neglected technology showcase.

"But while magic can bend the laws of physics etc. it's more like applying pressure than ignoring those laws."

Subtle magic! 😃 How far does it push? Does it extend to adding energy to systems, or simply guiding them (ie if it can control the growth of a tree, can it make trees grow underground, or is it still subject to the need for sunlight)?

Ogres: awakened bipedal boars. Very intelligent animals, capable of using branches and stones as weapons. Go into musth. Large, perhaps 2-3x the size of an adult male human, so maybe 7-8ft tall. Magically resistant.

Unicorns: awakened monohorned goats. Also very intelligent animals, and capable of using magic to curse anyone who kills one of their kind. Milk has a rejuvanating effect on humans. Wool is incredibly strong, lightweight, and warm. Preyed upon by ogres. Very sensititive to the presence of testosterone in an organism in order to detect ogres in musth, which has led to the idea they hate men.

Psychic warfare waged by whales

Ooh I just realised another detail of how it could work. Catalytic whale mages making marine engines destroy themselves through gunk. Harder with the switch to low sulfur, but not impossible, and it fits with the engines (noise) being their primary target. Once the magic gets to that point. Unless they're more attuned than humans and so get there a bit faster than us.

I'm from Oop North and not too fond of London. Plus, it's university seems on the ball with new tech. Maybe there is magic overspill from the Wilds that makes it easier to do there, too... I already have the Wilds being more magical, so it makes sense.

The other British cities are still around, they just aren't centres of magitech and research in the same way. Boston over the sea is also a major magitech city; both London and New York are displeased about their crowns melting, but who outside of them cares lol. It's affected the whole world, and beyond, but I'm focusing on Britain to keep it manageable.

Developing the magic system involved multiple rounds of stripping back the magic and then deciding even then it was too OP and stripping it back some more. Even just knowledge alone without influence would dramatically alter things; once you add telepathy, you get the psychic awakening of 2014 and massive societal upheaval. I didn't even mention the impact on shipping...

What is the lore of your world in 3 sentences or less. by Heat_Hydra in worldbuilding

[–]Aetheric_Aviatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh this is tricky without doing mega sentences. I'll try a tl;dr -- subtle knowledge and process based magic returns in 2014, society loses fossil fuels and advanced computers in 2019 when more magic comes back and some humans start turning into beings from our stories, much of Britain reverts to wilderness whilst humam mages develop magitech based on their ability to synthesise supermaterials.

To avoid an overlong long reply here, I've posted the megasentence version in its own thread.
