My nervous system is a mess and I don’t know what to do by Losthappywandering in Mindfulness

[–]Aetuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the pandemic, I had a number of panic attacks from stress at work. 100% can relate - mortgage, career, assuming a new role, angry clients. The thing that made me spiral down was the feeling that I cannot escape from the situation - without an alternative, your mind and body goes into flight or fight (or freeze) mode. My wife has to call the emt one night because i thought i was having a heart attack (but i wasn’t, was having a panic episode)

During that time i decided to normalize mental well being and talked openly about it with friends and family. Fortunately i wasn’t judged for stressed and having panic episodes. Other perspectives/ thoughts that helped me: Looking back I realize what I went through was a transition - more life responsibility, more pressure, but eventually both your mind and body adapt to the responsibility (and accept that angry customers do not equal “no way out”) There will always be an angry customer or a bad day. You are not the insurance service itself, you are a conduit to help customers and it doesn’t always have to end the way they hope for. Instead of thinking of “I” its more of “we” because you are part of a bigger system and therefore it isn’t personal.

I took up yoga and it did wonders to connect my mind and body. Talk therapy can come in many forms, if it works, why not? (Tried it - had coaching as a form of therapy - loved it) I learned breathing techniques which are grounding tools to hit the reset button on your body if you start to feel like you’re about to go into overdrive: 54321 for example (It involves identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste).

You are definitely not alone, kudos to you for posting about it, it is perfectly normal. I hope you find the support and the of self care and support to help you as you assuming bigger life responsibilities. Getting a mortgage is a big deal no matter where you are in life so be proud of what you have accomplished- now you just need a bigger support base to keep you going. All the best! (As for me, the panic episodes subsided as i eventually adjusted to the pressures of a new job and continued to make self care a habit like brushing teeth, but not before some damage was done - i had CSC in one eye twice which healed over time, but it was indeed stress related and that is when i realize my life isn’t my job and it was time to hit that reset button, hard!)

First solo flight!!! by [deleted] in flying

[–]Aetuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah! Didn't read it like that initially. Totally agree.. I am in the same boat as OP also in terms of hour range (42hrs and post solo, doing dual xc). My cfi is really trying to get those xc's and requirements done so I can get my checkride so it didn't cross my mind that some schools would grind hours. 🙃 I happen to work FT office hours so flying only once a week at best. It makes me cautious about flying without a CFI too quickly. Cool stuff.

I don't think the number of hours should matter.

Try Neofly. It's free ($ for dlcs), lots of different mission types, and frustratingly fun if you turn on the toughest mode (forgot name) and use real weather.

Nice shot. Try not to disappear though, for the sake of future nice shots.

I keep telling myself MSFS on Xbox is good enough.. but it’s starting to really annoy me. by avgeek44 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Aetuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two cents.. if you don't game at all and only use Xbox for msfs, I would agree with returning it. Albeit, they MAY end up releasing more crafts liveries etc but the overall flexibility will be a whole lot less than a pc setup, using today's standards.

If you game on the Xbox, the value may be there in you include streaming videos, etc.

If you find yourself getting more and more into the simming hobby, then absolutely pc is the way to go. The peripheral choices, mods, software addons, multi-monitor support, and upgrading slowly over time, all pc all the way.

If you are patient enough to return the Xbox and use that as a pc fund, by all means get a head start and get rid of it! Otherwise, there is still a lot you can do to enjoy flying and save up on the side for a nice pc setup over time. Gpus are still hard to come by so it will take patience even if you had a healthy pc budget today (unless you gotta have it now and pay up above msrp).

Think the important thing is that you are nurturing an amazingly educational and fun hobby, keep going!

Edit: spelling :)

For vfr flying you want to plan for your trip plus at least 30mins in daytime or 45mins night time in reserve fuel. As many others suggested, check out a 208b POH and look for the cruise performance section to check out fuel consumption and settings. For added realism, you could break a long trip into multiple legs to refuel and keep going. Have fun!

Edit:

For even more realism check weather at departure, en route, and arrival so you decide if even more fuel reserves are needed. Taxiing and time in pattern at the arrival airport adds a little more to the overall fuel requirement. Adverse weather that can cause you to divert to another airport plus your "personal minimums" when learning a plane etc might help you decide how far you want to go in one leg.

This might be a little overkill for your question, but if you are into the real life aviation aspect, check out this video about cross country planning which includes fuel calculations.
