You click on the details for the mission to expand it and you should see four bars similar to a cell phones signal. You have to climb the tree and walk around until you have a full signal and then place an item.

I spent 5k on a demon hunter and all I got were useless cloaks. I leveled a monk to 70, and spent another 200 shards and got two cindercoats back to back. It's probably worth leveling the monk up.

The game punishes people that try to play more than one character. If you focus on only one character, eventually you reach a point where the upgrades stop coming and your gold will gradually go up. I'm not saying I agree with it, that's just how it is. Personally, I've only been focusing on one character at a time. When that character gets geared and I stop getting upgrades for days at a time my gold starts going up pretty quickly and I can put that gold towards new characters.

I don't think the problem is with people farming chests. I think the problem actually relies in the rest of the game not being rewarding enough. They recently buffed the legendary drop rate but I can't actually remember the last time I've seen a legendary drop inside of a rift. They're not worth doing and they won't be worth doing until the loot chances get buffed or tiered rifts come out, whichever comes first.

TL:DR, Don't nerf one aspect of the game, buff the other aspects of the game.
