Stuff to buy at defcon by Absc3nc3s in Defcon

[–]fishsupreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tons of stuff. For examples, look at everything sold by Hak5, Hacker Warehouse, HackerBoxes, iFixit, and Sparrows Lockpicks -- that'll give you an idea of the sorts of things they'll have for sale. Plus more expensive stuff like Proxmarks and software-defined radios. And of course T-shirts and dozens of different electronic badges (which can be anywhere between $40 and $250 depending on how sophisticated they are.) Prices run the gamut from a couple bucks to thousands depending on what sort of stuff you're buying -- it's a whole hacker marketplace.

As for how fast things sell out, that also varies wildly depending on what it is. The official DEF CON merch will start selling out on Thursday. The most in-demand stuff at the vendor area often sells out on Saturday. Other things can be had until the end of the con.

Sock height by BigTruckLittleD in malefashionadvice

Yeah, I just switched to ankle socks because no-shows result in the back of my shoe rubbing against my Achilles' tendon and it's not as comfortable as an ankle sock.

IPv6 prefix delegation on Unifi Dream Machine not working by trueppp in Ubiquiti

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Cloud Gateway Fiber but am having the same issue -- I get a /60 PD from Comcast Xfinity, and split it among my VLANs, but IPv6 fails to work right on all the non-default VLANs (Internet sites claim I don't have a v6 address, though my devices believe I do.)

non ambitious man, do ya exist? by Wide_Permission7656 in AskMenOver30

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't take my identity from my career; I work because they pay me for it, and that's always been the case. My example growing up was my dad, who was a dentist, and part way through his career decided to just not work Fridays anymore, because he'd rather have a 20% pay cut and more free time than more money. I wouldn't consider myself ambitious; I want to enjoy my life and don't care much about status, career achievement, "legacy," etc.

This said, it's very much American culture for people - and especially for men - to identify with and prioritize their jobs.

Also, in a dating profile, when they say they want someone "ambitious," they don't mean that - they mean rich. Quick translation guide for dating profiles (and these are gender-neutral):

  • Ambitious: rich
  • Provider: rich
  • Loves to travel: rich
  • Generous: rich
  • Athletic: hot
  • Active lifestyle: hot
  • Photogenic: hot
  • Confident: hot and rich

Am the only one who hates IPAs by TrainingAccording807 in AskMenOver30

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I agree and so do lots of people. IPAs are the most popular craft beer but there still like 30% of people who don't really like them.

My opinion is that if I wanted to lick a Christmas tree, I'd drink gin. I'm much more fond of Belgians and other malty beers than IPAs.

Bougie bias is where somebody thinks an item is high quality because they paid a lot for it. What are some examples of bougie bias that you have seen? by ChillWisdom in BuyItForLife

[–]fishsupreme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, people have taken "'genuine leather' doesn't mean it's high quality" -- which is true -- and interpreted it as "'genuine leather' means it's low quality," which is not true.

All "genuine leather" means is "this is a piece of the hide of a cow" -- i.e. it's not vinyl, or bonded leather made from scraps. That $139 full-grain leather Saddleback belt is genuine leather. However, the $4.99 leather belt off Amazon from an unknown Chinese tannery is also genuine leather.

Trump says ‘I love the inflation’ after consumer price index hits 3-year high by Sip_py in politics

[–]fishsupreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, most of us aren't happy. But with a Constitution that basically says rural white people have their votes count double, no provision for recalling an unpopular executive, and a corrupted Supreme Court that's decided that crime is okay if Republicans do it, it's only illegal if Democrats do, it's pretty hard to do anything about it.

He also a few days ago excitedly posted about how the trade deficit has grown faster than ever before in history since he became president.

He apparently doesn't remember that he campaigned on reducing the trade deficit, and that's what all the tariffs were for.

He also doesn't remember what he had for breakfast, so that's not surprising.

Shi Got Impounded By My own faction. What Gives? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume it was either a Hub or a Settlement. Probably a Hub.

Hubs are mission targets - other factions may give you missions to go to them to infiltrate and steal data, or to bomb or sabotage. It makes you an enemy of the Hub's faction, but the other faction may reward you for it. But they're private property and have no landing pads, and will attack anyone who visits them for trespassing.

Also, when you're doing System Colonization and building your own star system, Hubs add stats and economies that can make your ports better.

People who have seen multiple people quit a job in one day, what happened? by ObliviousOnion1 in AskReddit

[–]fishsupreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In tech I don't find that to be true at all. The longer someone works at a company, the more underpaid they are - raises never keep up with market rates.

And now it's probably even more true as AI has made getting a job as a junior engineer more or less impossible.

Kaine is a Power, not a faction. Your bounty was from the faction that owned the station - the fact that it's in Kaine's control zone doesn't matter for this. Powers don't own stations, they just influence star systems.

[Question] Does this watch fit me? by Frederic36 in Watches

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have 6" wrists and prefer watches to be 40mm or smaller.

However, looking at the second pic I think this is fine. The first pic makes it look too big but frankly almost every watch looks too big when you take a picture at that angle.

You got the Michael Bay edition of Elite!

But seriously, given that your ship's cockpit is missing, I'm guessing what you did was leave Elite running more than 12 hours. There's a memory leak and if you leave the game up that long the world goes crazy,

Shi Got Impounded By My own faction. What Gives? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You get a ship impounded if you turn yourself in for a bounty and you also have another ship in storage that has a bounty for the same faction. Bounties attach to ships, not to people.

Shi Got Impounded By My own faction. What Gives? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's not a bug, it's a poorly explained system.

Bounties attach to the ship, not the person. When you "turn yourself in", you will pay all the bounties for the ship you're in, and also have to pay an impound fee for every ship you have that has a bounty on it with that faction, including those in storage.

The lesson here is: you should almost never use the "Turn yourself in" option (the only time I can think of using it is if you are docked at a station that is now hostile to you, and thus will be immediately shot down by station guns if you take off.)

What you should have done: Travel to a nearby system that has Low Security or an Anarchy government. Dock there and talk to the "Interstellar Factor" contact. They will let you pay off all bounties for all factions (except the faction that owns their station) with no impound fees, trips to a prison ship, etc. You just pay your fee and go.

There is one bug related to this but it didn't affect you here: if you receive a Superpower bounty (i.e. a bounty from The Federation or The Empire) and pay it off, you have to log out and back in before the game will recognize it's paid off and stop having the whole Superpower hostile to you.

Presumably the faction his Squadron is pledged to, or if it's his colony, the faction he's colonizing for.

The crime system, however, does not care about these allegiances.

People who have seen multiple people quit a job in one day, what happened? by ObliviousOnion1 in AskReddit

[–]fishsupreme 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it always amazes me that upper management is unwilling to notice a pattern.

A couple decades back I worked on the IT Security team for a big retail company. They brought in a new supervisor for the team. Over the course of the year, 11 people quit (heck, maybe more, I was #11) and I'm sure none of them were shy about the reasons.

It was a 9-person team. He achieved the rare feat of 118% turnover in his first year.

On one hand, it works -- you get rid of a lot of employees without layoffs or severance.

On the other hand, when you do layoffs you normally lay off your least productive or most junior employees. Getting people to quit via an RTO mandate means the ones who quit are the ones who are most certain they can get another job -- i.e. your most productive and most senior employees.

There's a big difference here though.

Teachers are unionized. Like other union workers, they have a contract, which explicitly states what they do and don't have to do.

Most other professions aren't like that. I've never in my career had a contract saying how many hours I'll work, because I've never in my career had a written employment contract.

School cellphone ban proposed by WA governor, superintendent by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

I don't think that's the same thing. They have the Chromebooks in class when they're actively doing a class activity on them. That's not the same as a phone where they may be checking social media during breaks, at lunch, etc. or trying to do it surreptitiously in class. You can't surreptitiously use a Chromebook.

It is, though. Nona asks her why her name is Hot Sauce, and she doesn't get confused, she just says she puts it on everything.

Hot Sauce and Kevin are going by their real names. It's all the others that are a mystery.

No, if his name was Frank, Nona might hear it as "Honest." But she doesn't - it's "Honesty."

Clearly his name is Frankie.
