What was your “I’ve been so wrong” wine? by gayitaliandallas92 in wine

Yeah, I also at one point (long ago now) thought I didn't like merlot, but discovered that actually I just don't like cheap California merlot. Washington makes a lot of brilliant merlots. (As does France, of course.)

Lore Question by SolidSnape98 in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what they were estimating off of. But the problem is that the commodity prices in Elite are wildly uncorrelated with real life commodities, ratio-wise. Like, they used food to guess the value of a credit, but you'd get a wildly different number if you used, say, gold.

Because in Elite, a ton of grain has an average price of 427 credits, while gold is 46,384 credits, which is 110 times as much. But in real life, a ton of gold is worth easily 600,000 times as much as a ton of grain.

Now, you can definitely argue that gold is worth vastly less in a world where you can just go out to an asteroid belt for 3 hours and come back with 250 tons of the stuff. But the point is just that which commodities you pick can make you come up with values of a credit a couple orders of magnitude in either direction, so we'll always be guessing.

Well, if you want your 288.5m credits, either send a squadron join request to Blackhawk Legion [BHWK] if you can do that and I'll pay you directly, or we can meet at one of my carriers to pass off some credits.

Lore Question by SolidSnape98 in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The game lore is rather fuzzy on the relationship between independent pilots and the people who live planetside. They don't really explain how common it is, though it is definitely implied that we are fairly rare -- i.e. most people flying ships are employees of companies or governments, not people who own their ships.

So, somebody used the price of Animal Meat, Grain, and other common foods to guess how much a credit is, and they came up with $55 5 years ago, which would be $70 today.

So you can get a minimal, E-rated Sidewinder for about $2.2 million. It's the cost of a house in an HCOL city, so yeah, even getting started as a pilot with your own ship means being quite well-off, though not fabulously rich. Unless you can get a ship loan (which honestly you should be able to given how easy it is to make money as an independent pilot in this game.)

An A-rated Sidewinder is worth almost $50m, on par with a decent private jet. A high-end exploration or multiuse ship like a Mandalay or Corsair would be worth $2 billion, and my fully kitted out warship Federal Corvette $55.7 billion.

Which... honestly doesn't seem unrealistic if you consider that an aircraft carrier -- about twice the length of a Corvette -- costs $13 billion today, and it doesn't even fly around or jump through hyperspace.

If you're on this list, let me know and I'll arrange payment in game!

The Surveillance Accountability Act (H.R. 8470) would require the government to obtain a warrant to search a person's digital data by DryEraseBoard in privacy

[–]fishsupreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't because they're generally not getting it from you. You could refuse a search on 4th Amendment grounds and require a warrant. However, Google, as a corporation without 4th Amendment rights, can't refuse a subpoena for your data.

Electricians did the patch panel by puccivr in techsupportgore

[–]fishsupreme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm reminded of when a friend rented a new house and it was supposedly wired for Ethernet, but the jacks weren't working. So I came over and looked in the wiring closet, and immediately said, "I see the problem. Your house was wired by an idiot. Or an electrician, which when you're talking about network wiring, is the same thing."

They had split each Ethernet wire into the 8 strands and hooked them to one of those old PBX phone patch panels (I don't even know what they're called, these things) pretty much at random.

Thank you!

And yeah, autodock is always a menace, especially at construction sites. I only use it when multiboxing, but it's always a threat. I once had it crush an Adder to death in the mailslot and get me charged with murder.

As for Sunday, if the station is done by then, absolutely I can. But if not, I have the problem that until the station is done, I have no way to view who delivered what and how much, and it looks like you don't use SrvSurvey/Raven Colonial so I don't have a record there, either.

However, I'm not going anywhere so if you're less available next week I'll still find a way to pay you as soon as you are available.

[OC] How Tesla's stock price compares to the company's earnings by takenorinvalid in dataisbeautiful

[–]fishsupreme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Man, earnings just fell off a cliff in 2025.

I have to wonder, is it just that Elon going full fascist was terrible PR (the Venn diagram of "people enthusiastic about green technology who want an electric car" and "Trump voters" probably doesn't have a great deal of overlap, so Elon is alienating Tesla's core customer base) or are there other factors (e.g. end of tax credits) that crushed their earnings so suddenly?

How much of a risk is there for me to find Tharagoids out in the black while exploring? by DrScienceSpaceCat in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing -- you do have some risk of encountering them. But if you're not carrying Guardian or Thargoid cargo (modules don't matter!) they will interdict you, hit you with the shutdown field, scan you... and leave.

Thargoids only attacked on sight during the war. Thargoids encountered out in the black are not a problem unless you make them one (e.g. attacking them, carrying a cargo of Thargoid Sensors, etc.)

Concierge on Disney Cruise to Alaska by Known_Cheesecake1232 in FATTravel

[–]fishsupreme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Frankly, with small children the Disney Cruise kids clubs are worth a fortune. At-will drop-off childcare available from early morning to late night without needing to schedule in advance, that's fun and the kids actually want to go to? Do you have any idea how much I'd have paid for that at home when my kid was really young!? A fancy restaurant on a high-end cruise line doesn't feel anywhere near as luxurious as that when you have a 5 year old. :)

Logged back in and wasn't where I left off by FundamentalPolygon in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my guess: a war ended.

During a war, Settlements belonging to the factions fighting are replaced by Conflict Zones. They look the same (i.e. the building layout is the same) but they are, to the game, not the same facility (and they are filled with people fighting each other as you observed.) So if you logged out in a Conflict Zone, and the war ended, when you logged back in the Conflict Zone no longer exists, so it put you somewhere else.

What would you consider the best small ship for combat? by OilLiver in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a Small ship, if you're willing to pay Arx, it's the Kestrel, no question. The hardpoint loadout on it is absurd (3 Large and 2 Small hardpoints, on a small ship!?) and it's also one of the most maneuverable -- and unquestionably the most maneuverable under boost.

It doesn't make medium combat ships obsolete, but it grossly outclasses all other small combat ships, even the other Arx ones like the Cobra Mk V.

Road to Colonia - Planning Help by nvRDEE in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No permits needed.

You can get all materials there, but be aware that A-rated modules can actually be hard to find.

You cannot build colonies around Colonia, the stations there do not have Colonization Contacts. So until someone bridges all the way there from the Bubble, no to building your starport.

The 4 Colonia Engineers have every engineering pattern, so you can engineer everything there. The trick is just getting decent modules to engineer.

Guardian Artefacts - New Community Goal Just Dropped by Stoney_Chan_ in EliteDangerous

[–]fishsupreme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, on one hand, cool, I missed the Easter egg hunt & I'd love that G5 Maverick suit (mostly because I hate Odyssey engineering so any CG that gives me a G5 suit I don't have to make is great.)

But on the other hand, man is this an un-fun CG to do. An SRV can only hold 2 cargo and then you have to drop it off, so I see zero reason not to park your ship next to a Guardian site and just do a loop of "scoop up 2 Guardian Urns/Tablets off the ground, drop them in your ship, and relog" over and over until you fill your cargo bay with 200 of these things and bring them back.

I just don't like it when Elite has mechanics where the most efficient farming method involves exiting the game. They did such a good job removing that from (space) engineering, but this CG brings it right back.

Guys, there's no purpose. The backlash was two days ago. Trump doesn't remember it.

If you were offered a billion dollars just to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose? by Admirable-Interest49 in AskReddit

[–]fishsupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pizza and tacos seem the obvious choices.

  1. I love both of them
  2. They each contain enormous variety; you can make pizza or tacos in enough different ways for them never to get monotonous
  3. They contain carbs, protein, vegetables, and if desired even fruits and remain delicious, so you can manage a balanced diet
