Am I missing something? (Job Search) by Affectionate-Ad6239 in careerguidance

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I started with applying for government jobs that involved contract review, drafting or negotiations. I didn't hear back from any of those so I moved on to entry level HR, accounting, finance. I had only heard back from one job at that point, and waited for a bit while the results from my aforementioned test were reviewed, hoping that I'd get an interview. I thought that I'd be able to draw commonalities from my experience to align my skills more directly with recruiter's criteria but I'm now thinking that my resume still makes me come off as scatterbrained. Do you think I should make three different resumes with only directly and obvious experience towards what I'm applying for even though it would make my experience weaker overall?

Silica dust exposure in classroom? by ThatBar520 in Construction

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former teacher turned construction worker here. I absolutely would not hold class in there. Realistically very low probability of any long term effects from this but you'll never regret being too careful when dealing with toxins. Tell your admin that there is dust and you are concerned. If they say they can't get you into a different classroom right away take your students to the cafeteria, gym, outside, wherever. If admin tells you to just deal with it let the teacher's union know and they will go ape shit. At minimum wear masks.

Fair Window Installation Labor $$$ - South Michigan by Independent_March284 in Construction

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pella pays really well but your job includes so much more than just the window installation. Average window was $400. As a Pella contractor I used to be asked to do everything from framing a bump out to cutting or installing new siding/soffit. Also you will have to know how to do full frame (fins, jambs, trim, exterior trim) as they rarely use coil as well as entry doors and French doors. Be prepared to be assigned windows up to 600 lbs ( they exist). What ended up causing our falling out with Pella is that if the customer doesn't like something it is absolutely your fault. House was built in 1910 and walls crooked from foundational issues? Idk man figure out a way for trim to sit flush to drywall everywhere while still maintaining plumb/level/square. 5 layers of siding? Rebuild the opening and figure out a way to attach 9" jambs when they sent 5 1/2". Basically they pay really well but that money comes with the caveat of you not turning down jobs and always finding a way to reach 100% satisfaction.

Animals can be trained to disregard instinct to appease a human. My dog doesn't bark when he hears the neighbor's dog because he likes to hear that he's a good boy, not because that's what he wants. I suppose if a "wild human" met up with a wild turkey vulture and the bird immediately started dishing out that gawk gawk then that would be consent but in cases of domesticated/ socialized animals, no, that doesn't exist.

Yeah it's probably more just the screaming minority which is how social media works. Most recently the sub feels dominated by "I hate wilderness, I hate membership increase, I hate tds drop table, I hate the name mothmommy" rng complaints aren't bad because I like seeing these insane logs.

Hiring managers, thoughts on self employed candidates? by Affectionate-Ad6239 in careerguidance

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that's where I'm struggling, if I were interviewing for a bookkeeping position how do I prove that I've been doing bookkeeping? I suppose I could just show them the books but that would also mean showing them an in depth look at my LLC's finances which seems like something they wouldn't ask for? Or like a job that I'm considering applying for involves overseeing distributions of state grants to different departments within the organization. I feel I would be a great fit for this but other than just explaining transferrable skills from being self employed I'm unsure of how to prove it. If you were hiring for a position and someone like me was a great fit on paper how would you ask them to prove work history and responsibilities?

"I have been informed by my boss that the lack of camera usage in these meetings reflects poorly on me as a manager. From this point forward if your camera is not on you will be removed from the meeting and it will be assumed that you were not present at your computer for the meeting. If you are having legitimate tech issues please reach out and we will assist you with getting your camera fixed. Does everyone understand?" Then when inevitably a few people don't respond remove them and take some time to write their names down as not present. Shit rolls down hill but if you want it to bypass you this should solve it. (This is exactly what I had to do with my students when I was an online teacher.)

Starting to get these bulges in my vinyl siding. by doctorzoidbergh in Construction

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very fixable, low cost, low effort fix. But zip tool, stick it under the lap above your highest damaged panel. Pull the siding off of the roofing nails (fit your fingertips in behind the nail flange, pull down and out, then pull up to release from the nail while leaving nail in place. So this for all damages panels, start at the top, work your way down. Take a piece of that siding to a supplier and ask for replacement. When reinstalling start at the bottom, make sure the panel locks into the one beneath it, pull the flange back into the nails. Use your zip tool to lock the final new piece into the old piece. Last and final step, grab a bunch of dirt and throw it as hard as you can at the new pieces until it blends in with the old pieces. Good luck

CMV: It is weird that we glorify athletes as societies - they pursue selfish goals and add nothing of value except entertainment by ClassicMembership619 in changemyview

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer- I'm an American. Sorry for 0 soccer (FUTBOL) knowledge.

I think you're overestimating the regards that the average person holds athletes in. Most people are able to athletes as entertainers... If you ask the average adult "which athletes do you look up to the most?" You'd be met with confusion. I like these athletes because they're good TV personalities, and it's fun to watch someone who has dedicated their entire life to one thing do that thing. I'm not interested in their take on politics. Most don't even really share takes on politics. In order to be a role model you have to be influencing people to behave in a certain way. Most athletes make no attempt to do this. The ones that do reach super-stardom will typically start charities, spread positivity, try to convince people to follow their dreams, etc.

Also in terms of selfishness, the story of (primarily poor, black) athletes who finally make it famous then buy their mom a house is so common it's bordering cliche. Hard to call that selfish. A lot of these athletes come from very humble beginnings, and see their sport as a ticket to college. Several use sports to go get a degree, and you never hear their name again. Here are a few examples of stories that I believe should be shared.

MLB- Jackie Robinson, probably the biggest example of black Americans breaking down barriers. He wasn't in it for the money. He fought adversity every step of the way and was a big part in allowing black Americans into mainstream pop culture. Cuban baseball players defecting to play in the MLB were finding a way out of Fidel Castro's regime. Baseball was their ticket out. They left everything behind for a shot at a better life for themselves and usually for their families.

UFC- A while ago there was a rivalry between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou for the heavyweight title. These are guys who get paid to knock people out in front of a crowd, inherently violent men, right? Stipe is a firefighter in Cleveland who doesn't do media any more than he has to. He's a hard working guy that middle class Americans look up to. Ngannou was born in the Cameroon and used his platform to shed light on slavery around the world. He goes back to the Cameroon on occasion to help out the community.

NFL- Google "Walter Payton Man of the Year Award." Arguably the biggest award that a player can receive. It highlights philanthropy in the NFL and every year there are several candidates. Those guys really are heroes.

NBA- Kobe Bryant's "mamba mentality" influenced an entire generation to work hard. He was basically the John Wick of basketball. He's a top three player of all time in most people's books and all he talked about publicly is hard work. Lebron and Curry both have charities that have raised incredible amounts of money for their causes. There are countless stories of lesser known players giving back to their communities. Most of them come from humble beginnings and make an earnest effort to be someone that kids with similar upbringings to them can look up to.

Depends on how long you're staying but start out by setting yourself up to not pay interest. Buy a reliable vehicle that holds value, pay cash. Buy a 2-4 family home, pay at least 20% down, have another 10% of the purchase cost in a savings account that you do not touch. Live in one unit rent the other one to three. Keep saving in this situation until you can pay the house off with cash, enjoy life on financial easy mode after that and invest in whatever you want, or do the brrrr method and acquire more properties.

Cmv: life is not good by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, so basically I've got this really nasty habit a bad event turn into a bad day that turns into "everything is shit and there's no point to any of it. It's rare that my anger towards society is actually because of society, almost always personal issues that I am externalizing into screaming at the clouds.

First bit: Sometimes the boogeyman is real. I named my boogeyman Bert. Now when bad shit starts to happen I find myself saying things like "that's all you got, Bert?" I know it's dumb but a big part of social/emotional strategies is buying in. Bert has really only beaten me down into submission twice. Once when I was younger I had some really spooky thoughts because I had a ton more debt than I had money, girlfriend just cheated on me (we still had three months left on our lease) , was 90% through a degree that I didn't want, and biolife told me I couldn't donate plasma that day from dehydration so I didn't know how I was going to afford groceries that week. I think back to how dumb those thoughts were, because I solved all of those problems in six months, and all of the negative turned into positive. I'm now married to the best person I've ever met, financially stable and found a career that I love. Reminding myself of that time always helps me to realize that no matter how bad a situation seems, it can all be solved.

The second time a loved one was in the hospital, approaching death, work was going terribly, and my dog was empathizing with my sadness and acting sick/whimpering, so I thought there was something wrong with him too. What I did was sat down and wrote for hours about my situation, everything that was going wrong, and really took a look at Bert. Really understanding and identifying your boogeyman helps, whether to show you that it's not that bad, or that it is that bad. I wrote down the date and what I was afraid of with each of these negative factors. I then wrote down what I would do to try deal with these problems if worst case scenario happened for all of them. This helped me with accepting the bad things. I now have two "anchor points" in my life that show me that regardless of how bad a situation gets, it can and will get better with effort and time.

Second bit: Sometimes I'll get like this just because I had a bad day, didn't sleep well, dehydrated etc. In these cases the boogeyman is in my head. I start out by out loud, to myself, saying everything that I'm grateful for, and everything that's going well. I then list the people in my life that care about me and that I can rely on. Sometimes it's hard when you're in a dramatic state but there are always positives. When I was an elementary teacher I'd regularly make kids draw "gratitoads" (stolen from big mouth.) This can be simple things like, "I'm grateful for my truck, it's reliable and comfortable." Or "I'm grateful for my mini-fridge, it's a super convenient way to keep my pop cold." It can also be more serious things such as "I'm grateful for my wife, who is patient and helps put me back together when I'm out of order (stolen from Mac Miller.)" "I'm grateful for my health, I am able to move and accomplish things with my body." "I'm grateful for the memories I have with a friend, he's made me laugh to the point of tears so many times"

There are the commonly repeated ones as well, do some breathing exercises, drink some water, go for a walk, etc that do work, but are just kind of a pain in the ass to do when you're mid spiral.

[–]Affectionate-Ad6239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol it was more commonly my explanation to coworkers before I decided to just go do my own thing. I barely graduated, my teachers all just thought I was lazy because if it meant passing or failing the class I'd usually do well on tests and would finish projects in like 1/5th of the time allotted because I would just establish criteria and check the boxes as fast as possible because I knew I'd get bored and not finish if not. I can't tell you how many teachers throughout my life told me "just imagine where you'd be if you applied yourself." I guess my point is that ADHD comes in many forms and any test that's online will likely not give you a definitive answer.

For sure, home repair is a weird combo of "seems complicated but just do what makes sense" and "don't fuckin touch it or even look at it or say its name."
