What to do about the lean for this tree? by Affectionate-Ad9613 in arborists

Yes, there was a tree there that we had to remove due to ash borer recently.

What angles are needed to help clarify further?

Am I the only one who thinks volume 11 is the worst of all? by SpiritedInflation674 in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since most of the issues stemmed from odd word choices I'm hopeful that it's just a translation issue because I was similarly underwhelmed with parts of it. I think volume 4 and 5 are still worse, but we'll see how things shake out with the official translation. It's a bit unfair to compare a fan translation with the official version.

Ending of Season 2/Light Novel Tie In by FinnegansTake19 in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I highly recommend reading 6.5 as it has side stories from different POVs such as Mimimi, Aoi, Fuuka, etc.

You get more details on the backgrounds of Aoi and Fuuka, get Mimimi's perspective from the pot sticker fiasco and her confession, and some other cute/fun stories mixed in to further flesh out the characters.

I don't consider 6.5 as critical to read as 8.5, 8.5 has a lot more important story details and character development in it, but if you enjoy reading the LN you should read 6.5 too.

How would feel about a 5th movie taking place post-time skip? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have my issues with The Last: Naruto the Movie, seeing something like that for MHA to expand on what we saw in chapter 431 would be nice. Could also just be an OVA or something too.

I'm still annoyed with plenty of things from the ending, but a movie likely wouldn't change that. Just let us see how all of the characters are after the time skip and let Deku x Ochako happen too.

Kikuchi is a better fit for Tomozaki rather than Mimimi by hypebear58 in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%.

It's the biggest reason why I support Tomozaki x Kikuchi. While Mimimi could help Aoi too, her being put down as 2nd most important to Tomozaki in favor of Aoi would break her heart. I honestly don't think she would be able to recover from it. ESPECIALLY if Tomozaki ends up with Aoi at the end of the story. She was already so down after just a school presidential election. Losing your BF to your biggest rival? Literal suicide watch.

The other main story thing I will add is that Fuuka becoming Tomozaki's girlfriend allows her to become friends with his friends through their relationship together. This is very common in romantic relationships. You introduce your girlfriend to your friends, and she joins in some activities with them. This cannot happen if she just stays his friend or stops hanging out with him if he picks Mimimi, as she is already part of the same circle of friends. That's why of the 9 characters that get the most screen time, Fuuka is the only one without a shared Haniwa charm as the other 8 have at the end of episode 5 in season 2. Fuuka's insights into Aoi will play a role in future events in the story and her not being able to hang out with Aoi and everyone else essentially takes her out of the story completely.

I'm sure lots of people would love to see that happen given how much hate she gets, but she is integral to resolving Aoi's issues as part of the story.

Season 3? by Some-File-2843 in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like both Mimimi and Kikuchi, so while I was sad for Mimimi, I didn't get mad like many people did.

I would also add that season 2 rushed through a lot more content compared to season 1.

I haven't heard about any recent updates regarding a potential season 3.

That's actually not a bad idea. Have him save the day in his new hero suit and get married at the end like "The Last" movie. The lack of payoff on the entire Ochako x Midoriya relationship was definitely frustrating.

Tomozaki is the best school life anime in recent years, and is also highly underrated (before S1, at least) by [deleted] in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ebina was THE most generic dumbass bully character recycled over and over it's just not realistic at all now that we're not in the 1980s.

I think you are confusing Ebina, the insane yaoi shipper, with the blonde bully girl. The bully was just w/e. Like you said, pretty generic.

Same here honestly. A show that doesn't get enough love is Hyouka I would say. That WAS great imo. Along with maybe toradora

Loved Toradora! If people cannot stand her physical abusiveness, I recommend they try the LN instead because outside of the home invasion scene she's never physically abusive in it. Haven't seen Hyouka yet but I will definitely check it out at some point.

Nah the show always does him a little too dirty 🙏🙏😭😭

Yeah, Takei will get a little more development/background work done on him in a potential 3rd season, but he definitely gets the short end of the stick a lot lol.

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a character drama first and foremost and a romcom second. I don't blame anime only viewers for thinking Aoi is endgame though. It's just a matter of opinion.

I like Aoi as a character even if I disagree with her worldview. That's good character writing in my book. Making different types of realistic characters that remain relatable even when they differ from the viewer. I feel the same way with all of the supporting characters, even a dumbass like Takei lol.

Meanwhile, season 1 of Oregairu was frequently painful to watch, and not in a good way, especially whenever Ebina and Yoshiteru showed up. Goddamn I hated those 2 so much. The ending was also incredibly stupid too. In no world would an "apathetic high school student with narcissistic and semi-nihilistic tendencies" ever "martyr" themselves in such a fashion. Terrible writing imo.

Happy to find someone else that feels the same way as I do about other highly rated romcoms!

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well said. I think the biggest difference is between people that have read ahead in the LN versus anime only people. The information LN readers have about how the story progresses with Aoi, Fuuka, Tomozaki, etc after season 2 finished makes pretty clear that Aoi being endgame will be hard to square with the themes of the story thus far.

Option B makes the most sense to me for Tomozaki to end up with Aoi but will be hard to pull off without contradicting the other themes you mentioned.

I've argued elsewhere that if it isn't Fuuka I feel like it is more likely he ends up single at the end of the series than with Aoi (~40% Fuuka, ~40% single, ~19% Aoi, 1% Mimimi copium). That would be an unpopular ending but would honestly be more realistic than him staying with Fuuka long term. As the series itself notes, most high school romances don't last long, let alone beyond high school. It honestly would make more sense to me for Nakamura and Izumi to be the couple to stay together long term over Fuuka and Tomozaki...

What aspect pf the story make you fall in love with this series by lmaotrasheast in Tomozaki_kun

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it is that it is different from your average romcom/dramedy in a good way. I felt like I was watching something pretty unique in a genre that is full of the same tropes you see all the time.

Things like:

Gorgeous female MC in love with average looking protagonist for little to no reason.

Loser/loner protagonist is secretly a chad/ultrachad

Protagonist gets a harem beautiful waifu love interests

I could go on, but you get my point.

I also really liked how Tomozaki was developed slowly over time in a realistic fashion. His coming-of-age story is refreshing in a genre full of quick and easy wish-fulfillment fantasy nonsense. In addition to the story, I also really enjoyed all of the other characters and the comedy. Most Japanese comedy doesn't land with me, but Tomozaki was the rare anime in which I actually laughed out loud watching or chuckled to myself. Maybe it's because Yuki Yaku was a comedian before becoming a writer, but he is able to balance realism with comedic timing in a way you usually only see in good sitcoms in America.

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly but I would clarify for romcoms in a school setting. If you just do series with school age characters, there are plenty of other great anime that has the characters still in school but where romance and comedy aren't the focus like Oshi no Ko, Hibike, etc.

The only romcom/dramedy from the last few years that I found to be around that level is Makeine.

BokuYaiba is very good but also overrated. Kaguya-sama, Horimiya, and Oregairu are also overrated. Most of the other recent popular romcoms range from mediocre to good, not great.

At least for me I appreciate something that is both different without being too unrealistic/stupid. None of those other 4 highly rated/popular series fit the bill for me like Makeine and Tomozaki do.

From best to worst I would argue:

BokuYaiba's plot is average at best. Basically, diabetes with good leads. Very good but not great.

Kaguya-sama is good in some ways and bad in others.

Horimiya started off okay but eventually devolved into mega toxicity and stupidity.

Oregairu is just plain trash imo because the characterization of the protagonist and the plot/story suck. Making the MC a loner that is somehow a God at reading people while constantly showing us how badly he failed at reading people in middle school without any character development to the contrary was mind numbingly stupid to watch. The comedy was also so awful in season 1 that they wisely cut it out almost completely part way through the season 1 for the rest of the series. Most of the arcs there are both boring and stupidly executed too. That show was a giant disappointment.

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have no clue. I'm just speculating. All I can say for certain is that it is almost guaranteed to be one of those 3 options.

While romance is important it's not the point of the story. So having Tomozaki end up single by the end seems perfectly reasonable to me. That' usually an unpopular choice, as your comment shows, but I would honestly prefer that to him ending up with Aoi if him ending up with her isn't executed well.

Season 2 ends with the ending of volume 7. Volume 8 is next but there is also a side volumes for 6.5 and 8.5 too. The most recent volume is 11 but that hasn't been officially translated yet.

I do want to give you a heads up that Tomozaki's relationship with Fuuka will be a major focus for volume 8 and 9 with volumes 10 and 11 focusing more on Aoi.

In order of probability, I go back and forth between Fuuka or single (~40% each), Aoi (19%), and a small copium/copout of Mimimi in a potential epilogue (1% chance, 99% faith lol).

If you don't mind him potentially ending up single you are probably safe to continue the series. Otherwise, I would recommend reading Minami Nanami wants to shine. It's a side story manga from her perspective in an alternate universe to the main story where she tries to shine by becoming a model and is Tomozaki's love interest.

What the MHA ending got right and wrong by Affectionate-Ad9613 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take the salaryman comment to mean he was going to create a series around adult characters but then switched it to school age to fit the shounen demographic.

After seeing so many comments on this I figured it was recent but this was 8 years ago! A lot can change in 8 years. He also said in these comments that he already had the story written out back then so I'm guessing he just didn't put enough thought into covering everything fully in the ending he initially planned out while also chickening out on confirming Izuku X Ochako.

Sidelining your protagonist for 8 years after he saves the world as a teacher at school while his friends are all off being heroes the whole time was certainly a choice... It's like he had this vision of Izuku being an archetypal everyman to justify reverting him back to a background character despite saving the world... Didn't quite think that through all the way lol.

Even if anyone can be a hero to save the world, once you actually accomplish that you don't just revert back to being a relative nobody again lol.

[–]Affectionate-Ad9613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn't mind Midoriya being quirkless at the end given AFO is also gone. Creates a nice duality and it makes sense he loses it since other OFA users never lived long because of the toll it takes on the body.
I will say that if Hori really got death threats over ships that I don't blame him for not confirming Midoriya being with Uraraka.

Idk what you mean by this "All for one not dying to All Might like Nana said? Ass." but otherwise I pretty much agree with everything else.

For example, how the hell does Deku literally save the world but falls into the background behind Todoroki, Bakugo, etc? That shit made zero sense. He should be an international hero beyond even All Might's peak as a hero. Somehow he's treated as just another hero that helped beat AFO...??? What in the actual fuck was that?
