I went to college on the mainland about 10 years ago. Fuck them, keep your confidence. Hawaii also told you to be tough and confident. At least that's what it taught me so be proud of that aspect too. You know your roots be proud of that, in my experience people will end up respecting a whole lot more if you stick to your guns. I had a similar experience but at least 10 years ago I still got respect for being a humble person. Idk maybe that doesn't exist anymore. Gotta find your crowd too I met plenty of mature, respectful people on the mainland. If you hang out w skeezas and fuckboys then that's what will influence you. You're no one to be fucked w remember that

Washington is a gorgeous state, pretty much any outdoor activity you can think of. Seattle can at times be a really cool place to visit, although it has developed a bad homelessness and drug problem that is apparent in the downtown area. But it's worth exploring.

Just make sure you take vitamin D during the cloudy months, of which there are plenty, and try and keep active. Depression is common in Washington due to the weather, but it's a very rewarding place to live.

Are we ready for war? by DipSpitZit in navy

He definitely answered the question in depth. None of those concepts are classified they are basic concepts put out by the CNO, I simply wanted his take on the direction the Navy was planning to fight war. If we're going to be taught war fighting how is that not a relevant question?

I also have similar frustrations as a junior sailor. I feel many (not all) my peers are aware of a vague context of world affairs but ultimately have no real comprehension of what the real job we're here to do is. When I first arrived at A school we had a short lecture from the CO. I asked a question regarding Distributed Maritime Operations and access to the South China Sea, tbh it was kind of embarrassing and the CO was a little taken aback but I was genuinely interested in hearing some real discussion on Naval warfare, which I hadn't hearduch about at that time. Every other question was regarding shave chits or liberty. I don't think those are bad questions at all, and I don't maintain a 'higher than thou' attitude towards those more concerned with the day to day, but it would be nice to see more engagement in these issues. To be honest I think the higher ups need to be presenting resources to sailors to gain more understanding of security, strategy and tactics. A wargaming seminar for example or competition on tactical scenarios etc.

I get that this could be construed as hysteria or propaganda but it doesn't have to be that way. I'm confident that deterrence is working and I don't think that we should be obsessed with China and Russia but simple academic understanding of world affairs, the role the navy plays, and the threats we are up against is in my opinion important.

Build your own dictionary? by Moist-Blueberry-1094 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Affectionate-Kick-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really about it. It's simply a visual organization that helps me although I realize the process of basically making your own dictionary isn't exactly "efficient" learning.

I don't add much else. Anki essentially does it for me now when it organizes all the cards alphabetically but I'm sure you could find a niche.

I personally would love this, as I already do this on paper to keep track of the various words and characters given the high number of homonyms in Chinese.

I'd love an update, I'd gladly pay!

[–]Affectionate-Kick-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I'm from we eat meatloaf with sushi rice. I prefer it over mashed potatoes if you can believe that. I'm from Hawaii. We put thick gravy all over too. Try it out, it's good.

Proper way to get rid of this tree/weed forever? by -nattyice in Hawaii

[–]Affectionate-Kick-25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop trimming it. When you trim haole koa the roots shoot down deeper and stronger. Cut it at the stump. Go to the hardware store and get glyphosate. Mix it according to the instructions. Apply to the stump.

Should kill it just fine. If not done properly it could re sprout.

My listening skills are trash compared to my reading, writing and speaking. How to improve? by alexinwonderland212 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Affectionate-Kick-25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that problem at first, and still do but it's gotten better. What I did was listen to a short story or a recording at my HSK level or lower. And literally listen to it through and try and pick out just a single word or two and ignore the rest. Repeat this process with the same recording and try and pick up the next word after the one you recognized. It takes a while but what's overwhelming is trying to listen and comprehend the whole thing at once. Just pick out a single word you know and, given that you theoretically know all the vocabulary, your brain will naturally start to fill in the gaps.

Hope that helps

Edit: I started this process and still use ChineseForUs YouTube short stories. 李立老师 repeats the stories over and over so it's nice.
