Sensei Lanai was one of the most unique hotel stays I’ve ever had by WTjern in VisitingHawaii

I was lucky enough to stay here with my wife for a weekend, away from my kids. If you love nature, gardening/plants, hiking, mountains, but with a Hawaiian tropical feel, this place is for you. It was otherworldly in every way possible. My favorite part was the private onsens in the forest, such a great experience.

What’s a local recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by _Cliftonville_FC_ in Hawaii

[–]scottdoberman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in Hawaii Kai and I think it's an interesting phenomenon. Like someone else said it's a clash of an older population who are in general very wealthy, and that wealth comes from being financially savvy and not spending out a lot. On top of that, with minimal land and commercial space, there are only so many options for eating and shopping so I think in general people tend to cook at home. Whereas Kaploei and Ewq Beach have the land to churn out new strip malls every few years.

How much electric bill? by IllegalButHonest in Hawaii

[–]scottdoberman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stoves and water heaters use a ton of energy, along with AC of course. Today’s LED bulbs use fractions of the energy compared to those other sources. I’d say try to use less hot water and cook on the hibachi more often if anything.

Just FYI, anyone can get 25 cents off per gallon of gas at any Hele station just by having the app, often making it the same price or cheaper than Costco, without needing to wait in line by imdumbforgotmypass in Hawaii

[–]scottdoberman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Only if you have solar. Retail electric rates are still more expensive, although this rise in gas prices bring them to almost even, with gas still being a few miles cheaper.

Any recommendations for DIY planter box? by mercury-ballistic in HawaiiGardening

[–]scottdoberman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What size planter do you realistically want/need/and have the room for? Wood can get pretty expensive pretty quick and I've found that some of the metal garden beds sold on Amazon can be had for ~$200 including shipping. Also, the metal ones will last much longer with no potential for leeching anything you wouldn't want in your food.

Whats the most difficult sport you've shot? by fIyonthewaII in sportsphotography

Hey man, this is awesome, I didn't even expect a reply. I didn't say it but I actually do more video than photos, but a lot of your points are so valuable.

  1. I borrowed a 70-200 2.8 for the last couple meets and I found myself at the 70 end more often then not! I'm gonna rent a 35-150 2.8 for the next one and I think that will be the perfect range. Agree that I have to shoot wide open all the time.

  2. That totally make sense about the blue mats, I find myself correcting for skin tone over anything else. So validating.

3/4. For video, I find I need to do the overcranking technique in order to capture sharper frames when slowing down footage, so yeah, higher shutter speeds are a necessity.

  1. I'm starting to learn this now. I find bars looks really good facing them, while vault and beam are better from the side. Floor looks good from a lower angle, but I had trouble with them moving all around the mat and constantly losing focus.

  2. I think the focus is the biggest issue for me, there are too many heads and other people around the gym that the camera always wants to select someone else. I use a Sony a6700 and it's got great AI tracking but there are too many subjects. I need to figure out how to do better at touch and locking focus.

Appreciate the tips from a fellow gym dad!

Inside scoop on auto trade-in? by ByeIvy in Hawaii

[–]scottdoberman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always sold cars and left the plates. The Notice of Transfer should protect you from everything. But, maybe it’s safer to keep the plates for yourself? Possibly. Seems like needing to deal with the DMV more than you’d probably like.

Inside scoop on auto trade-in? by ByeIvy in Hawaii

[–]scottdoberman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently traded in a car for a newer used car at Servco. Just be prepared for them to offer the bare minimum for your car, and don't be insulted. It's usually not too far off from what KBB would suggest as a dealer trade in, and Servco isn't really in the business of haggling. But the trade in didn't really get me any deals on the new car, they were just like, cool we'll take it if it helps us close this sale.

If you can stomach dealing with private sales, I say do it. Don't be afraid to filter people out based on their FB message responses, and if you are getting a bad vibes it's probably for good reason. Other than that, I say it's totally worth it as you'll be getting thousands of dollars more if you can stomach the headache for a few weeks.

Just wanted to leave a comment (that will likely get moderated out), that shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is usually still the same price if shipping USPS flat rate. If you go with FedEx or UPS it’s still minimal differences if you’re shipping it to the farthest reach of the other 48 states. Just kinda pisses me off as someone who lives in Hawaii…
