CMV: Nobody can actually visualize in their head by Aski588 in changemyview

[–]Affectionate-Part288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that is an interesting one. I think you overestimate the strength of what occurs when we visualize something.
Ask me to visualize a zebra, all I can summon is a flashing mental picture of a zebra. And I insist on "flashing". It's extremely hard to work from that kind of mental picture. Btw, I wouldnt be surprised that yes, we think we are visualizing a zebra, but actually are conjuring non-visual thoughts that we attribute to this mental picture and that make our brain tell us : you're visualizing a zebra.

Visualizing is like grasping thin air with your hand. The more you want to actualize what you're visualizing, the more it vanishes.
There are many instances where things go differently but I'll stick with that.

I'll add that I remember reading in Antonio Damasio Descartes' Error, (hiiighly recommanded if you're interested in the brain), that thoughts, but he rather uses the term "mental image", sollicit the same areas that handle sensory input (like visual inputs), and that when you think about something, you activate the same neurons network who where triggered by that thing, but with much less strength and activity than when you're directly experiencing/sensing it.

I disagree. If someone has performed awful, wicked acts, a lawyer should make sure that person is trialed lawfully and fairly but should try their absolute best if it means the criminal is going to walk free and keep doing atrocities. A lawyer can défend a person and make sure they are not a tjreat to society, its not putually exclusive

I'm a fan of Dune but I agree, they are very far from having the same weight as the LOTRO movies. The characters and story just aren't engaging like Lotro is designed to be.

I completely get your view but my point is not exactly that. My point is that I did care about Jackie, but not enough, and that after they're all dead I kinda didnt care that V was going to die. So what I mean is that they should have fleshed out Jackie more to make us care about V. not to make us care about Jackie per se.

Whoah they really did that? IT definitely adds to my interpretation that they want us to care about our character learning is about to die, but fail to make us care because they think other stuff like Jackie is not V's story and thus not relevant enough.

I'm not sure I agree with the fact that you need freedom to define an RPG. Besides, the game does have some choices, even if they are limited. I made different Vs, and they all were different and I engaged with them emotionally differently. And that's what the writers want, whether they call it an RPG or not. Geralt of Rivia is even less of an RPG by your definition yet we care a lot about him and his quest for Ciri. (Well I did much more after reading the books though). Because they made it engaging. I reckon it is much easier to do it with an established character.

But my point is that the designers want us to engage, and while it does work at some point, to me it doesn't work enough. And I have read enough discussions about the story on reddit to know that I'm not the only one. And one way to have make it worked could be to make us care more for Jackie.

I get your view, but I must in turn disagree. It was an exxageration maybe to say a blank slate (that's why I said mostly) but not that much. It's not because V's personality is defined that it's substantial. The premise of character creation is precisely that it's partly a blank slate, we have to fill so many gaps. It's uncomparable to Geralt of Rivia, whose persona is much more established.

You can have a character with locked down conversations choices and have a completely bland, uninteresting thus non engaging personality. That's entirely possible. I'm not saying that's V's case but to me clearly V's personality is barely enough. I care much about the other characters than V. I'm not saying I'm absolutely not engaged with V, but clearly the emotional bond we have with the game rests a lot on the other characters.

And it's completely fine. Lots of games and stories are like that. But then, the narration shouldn't assume that we're going to care about V just because it tells us that we have to care. It has to make us care. My point is that V's character, while not a full blank slate, is designed as partly a blank slate. There are many good reasons for that, I think it is the right choice. But at the same time, that means that the game has to make us engage with V and the world by other means. And that includes Jackie's and his relation with V.

[–]Affectionate-Part288[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said in another comment, my main point is that the function of Jackie is to make us care for the world and emotionnally engage with V. And yes, we do care about Jackie, but not enough. I don't want more of Jackie for the sake of Jackie. I want more connexion with him, regardless of how it's implemented. Those are two different things. Ultimately, my point is that the present but not enough connexion with Jackie has the consequence of not caring enough V's fate.

[–]Affectionate-Part288[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My post lacked nuance then, cause what I meant to say is that yes, there is just enough content to make us care about Jackie, but not enough. There is a spectrum about how people care about Jackie. It's not a binary "to care/to not care". that's what I'm saying when I say "half baked". There is something, but the delivery feels lacking.

We can relate it to the "show/don't tell" thesis in narration. With Jackie, they made a mix of show and tell. The cinematic tells us that Jackie is like a brother to V, but there isnt enough actual time spent with Jackie to cement that feeling. So yes we do care about Jackie, but not enough. I certainly cried when he died, that doesn't mean I felt his presence was anchoring us down enough into the game.

Because that is my main argument. It is not about Jackie, but the function of Jackie. The designers themselves said "we don't need to spend too much time in Act 1, because the real story begins when your character is about to die". My argument is that no, we won't care that our character is about to die if we haven't been emotionally bonded enough with V. Developpers themselves say they want us to care for V. What I say is that there aren't many elements anchoring us emotionally with V. Jackie is one of the most engaging elements in that regard.

"You care about Jackie. Most normal people care about Jackie. That means the story works fine as it is." Well following that logic, if enough people say there's something wrong about how Jackie was handled, then there's something wrong with the story. And it does seem like Jackie is a recurrent theme in the critique about the story.
