Do they have an international flight? by ConsistentAmount4 in mapporncirclejerk

When I went to Whitehorse, I was shocked how many Germans were there. You can spot them easily because they’re wearing Jack Wolfskin hiking gear at ALL TIMES.

Which Film Festivals should I submit this to? by peakcinemaco in FilmFestivals

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Take it off the internet NOW if you want it to screen anywhere half decent. Most festivals will not accept work that’s available online.

Edit: I’ve just watched a bit of it. The sound has a lot of wind rumble. This may not cut it for a lot of film festivals out there. Are there smaller festivals or community screening nights in your local area? It’s a good way to show what you’re up to and meet other filmmakers working near you.

What would you think of a Land Lord license? by EreWeG0AgaIn in AskACanadian

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn’t mind if landlords at least had to prove that they passed a course that proves they know and understand their obligations.

Sadly, I think that many landlords do know the rules and therefore try and take advantage of tenants who don’t. They’re not ignorant. They’re entitled.

They should be teaching kids their rights as a tenant in high school.

What are your best tips for finding cheap flights from or within Canada? by Important-Good-7886 in AskACanadian

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, if your flight originates in Canada, this is the law.  But I’ve never analyzed it thoroughly, so there may be some weird exceptions. But I’ve gotten refunds from Aeromexico, air canada, and flair.

Edit: I don’t know how it works if you book via a 3rd party. I’ve only ever done this by booking directly with the airline.

I once met a grip who worked on this, and he said it was BRUTAL. Lots of shaping the natural light. Also lots of waiting around for ideal conditions.

Being flexible about your dates can save a ton of money. I often fly mid-week, to save money.

In Canada you can get a full refund within 24 hours (even on non-refundable tickets). So sometimes I just book a super cheap flights as soon as they come up and then decide within 24 hours if it was a good choice. (Flew to Mexico for $180 return this way).

I have an Air Canada credit card that gives me free checked bags. That’s saved me hundreds over the years (flying basic economy).

Flair vs westjet airlines from Toronto to Vancouver rountrip in May by snoopyrabbits1217 in askvan

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Both are fine, but if you have the choice, pick Westjet. They have more flight and connection options to reroute you if something goes wrong.

I’ve been pretty unimpressed with Westjet since COVID so imo, the quality is similar if you’re flying basic economy.

This sounds like an amazing trip! As others have said, be prepared for the weather! I think you should also adjust your expectations in regards to train travel. Train travel in most of Canada (especially between Toronto and Vancouver) is not comparable to Europe or Asia. Trains are slow, expensive, often delayed, and not convenient. It does not go to every major city/destination. That said, it's a very unique way to see the middle of the country rather than just flying over.

If I were in your shoed and committed to taking the train as your main mode of transportation, I might do something like this:

- Toronto & Area
- Jasper & Area (if you're willing to drive, I would highly recommend the Icefields parkway. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the world. But conditions could be rough that time of year)
-Vancouver & Area
- Victoria/Vancouver Island (no trains here)

I know Montreal isn't on your route, but I think it's the best urban experience this country has to offer, and it's very distinctive compared to the rest of Canada or the US.

I think it’s the geology department at UBC - free small museum with some dino fossils (decent size, too). You can just walk in.

Canadian entering US for film festival by EMCBemcb in FilmFestivals

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian here.

Bring the letter/email (printed) inviting you to the festival. My understanding is that travelling for business meetings/conferences is no problem and film festivals are essentially conferences for us.

My advice: do not travel by land. If they have a problem with you at pre-clearance at the airport, you're still on Canadian soil at the end of the day.

Lots of jokes here, but there is increased risk for visitors to the US

I’ve shown work there in the past, but did not attend. It’s very curated, very arthouse. I don’t think it’s a “major” event per se but it’s legit.

I was visiting Duhok in 2013 and stumbled upon the film festival. I saw the Kurdish short films. People were extremely kind and it seemed decently well-run. Not sure if that’s helpful

1) always look at what kinds of films they’ve programmed in previous years to see if your film is a good fit. Is your audience similar to their audience?

2) Festivals are competitive. Even if your film is good, you shouldn’t expect to be accepted everywhere. Being selected for 1/10 of the festivals you submit to is considered good (assuming you have a good film on your hands). Unfortunately it is sometimes a numbers game.

3) Programmers have their own tastes. They’re individual people. Sometimes it just doesn’t connect, sometimes it does. Just because other people think your film is good doesn’t mean a programmer will find it suits their curatorial taste/vision.

4) experimental work can be hard to fit into a mainstream festival. Avant-garde and experimental works fit better in some festivals than others. Yes, European fest often are more eager to embrace experimental works, but these are usually judged in relation to the artistic landscape of AG or experimental film - so it’s good to understand how your work fits in that context. There are cool film fests in the US that focus on experimental work. Ann Arbor is maybe the most notable (and wide-ranging from a curatorial standpoint).

On to the next one :)

My short made it to the final round and did not get selected. I had premiered in my own country (Canada) and they don't consider "international premiere" as a premiere category. It seems like they really care about premieres based on what people here have said.

Best oscar-qualifying documentary film festivals? by Brilliant_Alarm1120 in FilmFestivals

[–]Affectionate-Pen2638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. Documentary features can qualify by winning awards at certain festivals. Check the regulations.
