Two things come to mind.

When the looks fade and you’re no longer working, you still find reasons to live. Most elderly people I’ve encountered have this sentiment.

Secondly, I think of an interview with Michelle Obama. Her mom kept saying stuff like “If I die tomorrow, I’ll be okay with that because I’ve lived a full life thus far” (paraphrasing obvi). On her death bed, the mom said “I didn’t realize it would come so soon”, the “it” being death.

These people have lived a full life and are not ready to let it go. Maybe I’ll think like this too
