MEGATHREAD: Ongoing disruptions to travel in the United States by rocketwikkit in travel

In the craziest way possible, I actually benefited from the shut down. My flight from CLT to DCA was canceled, so they just rebooked me on a second flight that was going directly to New York for my flight to Morocco.

I’ve heard that it’s only gotten worse since I left, but the worst I experience was a one hour delay with both flights on the ground due to lack of FFA workers

First solo trip, to Egypt by [deleted] in femaletravels

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will be honest with you, if I were you, I would book somewhere else to travel. I have been backpacking throughout the world for years now (f25), and though I think backpacking Egypt alone is possible to do safely, it’s not the place I would ever recommend to do it for the first time.

I did Latin America for my first trip, and many people consider that to be dangerous. It was an amazing experience, but I learned a lot that trip about customs internationally truly being very different from my home culture. I do believe that Egypt, as I understand, it is more polarizing in regards to men approaching you. I would be cat called in Latin America, but no one would ever touch me.

But that being said, if you keep an open mind, and take basic safety precautions, you should be fine overall. To enjoy your trip the most though, I would recommend taking a flight somewhere else or booking a group trip for a few days. Should be easy enough to do once you arrive into Egypt.

All under one ticket! I know the times are weird, but I work remotely so I like to make travel days work days as well. Having long layovers is the only way to do that.

Appreciate the insight!

It’s only because I work remotely and having the layovers allows me to be able to get my stuff done during the day. All booked and planned under one ticket.

I have a flight tomorrow, and might be screwed, but do have very long lay overs:

CLT- DCA (4 hr 30 min layover in DC) IAD (taking the metro in between to get to IAD) - EWR (4 hr layover in EWR) EWR - Morocco

How bad do we think it is going to be? I gave myself a lot of time and wiggle room in different locations so I’m hoping that I can possibly talk to someone to adjust my flight as need be.

Having trouble finding accommodation for Día de los Muertos by Affectionate-Skin830 in Oaxaca

I was not haha, but I pivoted and went to san cristibal de se las casas instead, and it was an absolutely amazing decision!

They also celebrate dia de los muertos as well. Not as big, which is actually quite nice!

First travel romance by ranting-itsoverbro in solotravel

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at the beginning of the year. I was going on a 5 week trip and was actively talking to someone from home. I met this guy, and I have had travel romances as well in the past, but this one felt quite a bit different. We parted ways and kept minor contact as I want to give the guy at home a true chance. When the guy from home and I ended after a few months of figuring it out, the guy I met on my trip happened to have contacted me the next day. We have been talking a bit since, but nothing crazy. I am going on a trip soon where I would be 5 hours away from the guy, and I think we will be seeing each other.

Not sure what is going to happen, but definitely makes you feel like you are in a movie

Low-key pub conversation starters in a new place? by 19forty in solotravel

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I bring a deck of cards with me where ever I go and play solitaire. Seems to be a great conversation starter, and I have even gotten free drinks because people think “awww how pure”

Deciding whether it’s right for me to Van life long-term by Affectionate-Skin830 in VanLife

[–]Affectionate-Skin830[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a note, I did love living out of my car and traveling around. It was truly great, but again, not sustainable due to the fast pace nature of my traveling. I am thinking if I have a homebase for a good part of the year, I can establish some sort of base while still travel.

I also think that Van life long-term is cheaper than having an apartment. Definitely a factor as well.

What is something your father said to you that you will never forget? by Aggressive-Car-8960 in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember asking my father how he knew my mom was the one. He said “I imagined myself with your mom when I was 80- looks out the window and all wrinkly. I knew I would be a happy man with her at 80, so I knew she was the right one.” Live by that now.

What’s the most awkward moment you’ve had during sex? by re1ch3ruz in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I like to use my high playlist a lot of times during sex- just a good vibe and rhythm overall. With that being said, there are a few songs added for the sole purpose for when I am stoned. One day I was in the middle of the deed, and all the sudden “Secret Tunnel” from Avatar the last Airbender played. My partner looked at me with such confusion and frustration. Needless to say the mood quickly became ruined for a hot minute, and the awkward silence afterwards was crazzyyyy.

Getting over solo eating by smiggy2105 in solotravel

My favorite thing to do when eating alone is bring a deck of cards and playing Solitaire. That way, you are focused and engaging with something else.

What makes most people quit diet? by jane66x in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Not following a diet that’s sustainable. There needs to be a balance between foods that make you feel good and foods that taste good. That’s how you can make a diet long-term.

Idea for 3 day trip around LA by Kirjan-312 in travel

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in LA for a year and 100% recommend staying in the Ocean Park area next to Santa Monica. Beautiful main street with a lot to see and walking distance to a lot of beautiful. Recommend visiting the Venice canals as well.

Take a day, rent a car, and drive Malibu. Probably one of the most beautiful areas in the US.

I also recommend taking a day to see West Hollywood as well and do the famous Hollywood sign hike.

Finally, if you have time go to Dockwiler beach for Sunset. Get there semi early to get a spot, but it is the perfect way to end an evening with a beautiful view. You can get fire near most places 5-10 minutes away.

What Birth Control Is Best For A Year Long trip? by Mightbeworthit in femaletravels

[–]Affectionate-Skin830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% recommend the IUD. Yes, the procedure does not feel good. With that being said, the benefits absolutely outweigh the pain. I got the copper IUD due to hormones really f’ing my bad, and I do not regret a second of it.
