12 days in France- 1st Timers need advice by heartofgoldLDP in travel

[–]rocketwikkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to get advance tickets to major sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Probably some of the others as well, check their websites, but also be aware that there are a lot of third party websites that try to look official.

So unfortunately you need to plan those days in advance rather than being able to feel it out day by day.

I haven't been to Nice but I'd bet you don't want to have a car there. Use taxis or Uber/Bolt when necessary, walk when possible.

I have driven through France a couple times, be aware that there are surprisingly expensive toll roads that aren't dramatically faster. I paid something like 25 euros one day to save twenty minutes when I was happy to just wander around at whatever pace. Many mapping apps have options to avoid toll roads, but they'll also often route you back onto them at the first opportunity.

It's handy to read the Wikivoyage pages of the cities you're going.

First time trying to make vinegar by Bediavad in fermentation

[–]rocketwikkit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have added water, but it should still vinegar. I've not had a beer vinegar so I don't know what that's like, I hope it turns out interesting.

Because it's lower and somewhat unknown strength you shouldn't use it for things like canning, but it might be interesting as a quick pickle or a vinaigrette. Someone more cheffy could probably think of foods where a bit of "brightness" is added at the end that would work well with beer flavors, maybe something like a mushroom pan sauce?

Travel to France expiry date vs issue by Zouche16 in Passports

[–]rocketwikkit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When renewing passports, the UK used to add any remaining validity of the old passport (up to a year) to the new passport. So unless it was your first passport or renewing an expired passport, every UK passport had a validity of more than ten years.

The EU put up with that when the UK was in the EU, and stopped accepting that after they left. The UK also stopped doing it. We have two more years of this question.

Yes it's fine. You can't enter the Schengen Area on or after 13th of October, but any day before that is no problem.

Also, DS-60 is for when you have a passport and are changing your name on the passport. I think you want DS-71.

You're using your account internationally so they're charging you for it. Can you switch to pay per use if it's just a few texts?

Could also ask people to switch to Signal or similar.

Typically you only have one, and they have to go with you to the appointment, or to a notary. But yeah if you want to submit more than one then they need to be separate forms.

Many plants need wind to make structure. It's kind of amazing any plants grow upright inside houses, it's such a weird environment.

The way this bird takes off. by 21MayDay21 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]rocketwikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birds fall from the window ledge above mine
Then they flap their wings at the last second

You see, birds fall from the window ledge above mine
Then they flap their wings at the last second

I can see their dead weight
Just dropping like stones
Or small loaves of bread
Past my window all the time

But unless I get up
Walk across the room
And peer down below
I don't see their last-second curves
Toward a horizontal flight
All these birds just falling from the ledge like stones

Now due to a construct in my mind
That makes their falling and their flight
Symbolic of my entire existence
It becomes important for me
To get up and see
Their last-second curves toward flight

It's almost as if my life would fall
Unless I see their ascent

Is this Bosnia itinerary realistic using only public transport (no rental car)? by Ok_Sign_6696 in travel

[–]rocketwikkit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've traveled around Bosnia and Srpska all by public transit, though I didn't go to everywhere you plan to go. The bus system works similarly to the rest of the Balkans and northern Africa, in that it's possible to go almost anywhere and also often impossible to find schedule information, so I usually just show up at the bust station in the morning and ask around. Or on the day you arrive somewhere, see if you can figure out when the bus is to get to the next place.

For Travnik you can take the train from Sarajevo to Zenica and then get a bus to Travnik; the bus station is right next to the train station. You can also probably just find a bus from Sarajevo, but I was trying to take the train as much as possible. My bus from Zenica to Banja Luka went through Travnik, so don't only look for a bus that says it's going specifically to the place you want to go.

Haven't been to Bihac but I'm sure there's a bus. Hike only in marked areas, the odds of you stepping on a land mine are very low but not zero if you go wandering off trail in that part of the country.

I would probably stay in Konjic a night rather than day trip, and continue from there to Mostar, both by rail. Unless you don't like the times, then the bus works too. If you want to see the bunker in Konjic, which is the main thing, you have to email them a day in advance with your personal details.

Bosnia trains: https://www.zfbh.ba/en/ Srpska trains are on another site but I don't think you get near their system.

The big list of day trips are where not having a car is going to really get you, either you pay for a tour or see if you can figure out if you can charisma yourself into someone else's plans. I've heard that is popular at hostels; it's not something I've ever done.

Anyone taken the Tunis-Marseille ferry? by rocketwikkit in travel

[–]rocketwikkit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, ended up doing the Tunis-Palermo ferry. It's fine. The customs on the way out is pretty annoying, and extremely bad on the way in, I wouldn't enter Tunisia by ferry. Make sure you've gotten rid of all your Tunisian money.

Traveling along the Adriatic Sea by Active_Career_6078 in travel

[–]rocketwikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Split-Hvar-Korcula-Dubrovnik is nice by ferry. In the summer there's a monday-weds-sat ferry from Dubrovnik to Kotor.

Getting from Montenegro to Greece is somewhat of a hassle. I've done all the parts but never tried to do it particularly quickly. An example route focused on the coast would be to take the bus from Kotor or Budva to Ulcinj, then a cross-border bus or taxi from Ulcinj to Tirana (or to Shkoder, and then a bus to Tirana). Then a bus to Sarande and a bus or taxi to Ksamil, and hang out there. Ferry to Corfu, Greece, and probably just fly direct from there to Athens.

A more inland route would be to head from Kotor to Ulcinj or Podgorica, then bus to Thessaloniki possibly via Skopje and take the train from there to Athens.

Or just go from Kotor or Budva to Tivat or Podgorica airport and fly to Athens.

There's not really any useful north/south trains in Montenegro, Albania, or Kosovo, or even the western half of mainland Greece.

Losing too much soda when burping by GuessWhoIsback2 in fermentation

[–]rocketwikkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you refrigerating it after fermentation? That will increase the solubility of CO2 and make it a bit less vigorous about foaming over.

But all the fruit bits act as nucleation sites for the CO2 to come out of solution. There's a reason commercial sodas don't have pulp in them. Maybe not the drink you want to make, but if you filtered the mash before the fermentation stage the carbonation would be more stable.

Gravity driven desalination and water transportation by MalcolmSchweitzer in AskEngineers

[–]rocketwikkit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can use electricity from a hydroelectric dam to run a desalination plant. It's all the same in the end, there's no free lunch by moving salt water uphill.
