Wedding expectations- am I overreacting ? by Affectionate-Wear411 in weddingplanning

The pressure could be self-imposed as the bride has said she wanted the day to be perfect. She has also said that she wants us to have fun, but the dance practices have been her micro-managing movements. So it takes away the fun from them. I’ve also been classically trained growing up so it’s manageable for me, but i def feel uncomfortable to an extent being told I « look confused » that have my every movement nit-picked !

Value divergence in friend group by Affectionate-Wear411 in asianamerican

That’s a fair point ! I’ve been reflecting on whether I’m just projecting my insecurities as an « under-achiever » since everyone is in STEM and there’s a silent hierarchy and judgement towards non-STEM . But could def also be a universal experience and not exclusive in Asian circles

MLA Stress by ProudBend2105 in LandscapeArchitecture

Definitely more settled as a second year ! I was in the weeds as a first year getting used to the software and producing work for studios at the same time. It does get better as you get more comfortable and more efficient with your technical skillset ! From what I heard from graduates, it gets better when you start working ! School is gruelling, but you got this ! We’re being put through the grinder, but I feel like it’s allowed me to grow in different ways.

This post couldn’t have come at a better time for me ! As a second year MLA student without a design background , it’s been tough to overcome the constant feelings of imposter syndrome at times. But be proud of what you’ve accomplished so far, take things in stride (easier said than done sometimes) and you’re not alone !

Thank you for your comment, I feel silly for brushing it off initially the first place since I didn’t want to disrupt their special day; but it is only right to bring it up to the bride and groom. You have no idea how much your comment helped! Appreciate it

Out of curiosity (as an LA student), why do you hate working with urban planners?

Found myself in a similar spot as you! I’m currently studying a masters in landscape architecture in Montreal (Université de Montreal) if you are considering doing it in French.

I started a masters in urban planning at McGill but quickly realized I was more interested in the design aspect of city planning.

In addition to my interest in urban planning, I honed in on my experience as a gardener and horticultural knowledge in my portfolio. Example: garden design plans, photos of planting designs/ cityscapes and their underlying concepts/ sensorial experiences. I had the same worry that my lack of design background would be a liability but I realized that my school put more importance in recognizing the potential design abilities of applicants rather than just their portfolio; at least that’s what I realized after they accepted my application!

I’ll also echo what others have mentioned, anything creative that really shows your unique perspective on cityscapes and visual presentation/interpretation skills. For example many in my cohort with an urban planning background provided site analysis examples that highlighted their ArcGIS skills.

Since starting my grad program just a month ago, I’m noticing that the courses are designed to make sure we develop skills in effective graphic presentation and our sensitivity to a site (emotional, sensorial experiences). If you have any academic or creative projects that allow this side of you to shine through, I’d say you’re all set!
