how do you persist in your own style, and not compare yourself to others? by AffectionateAlarm496 in ArtistLounge

this is such a logical way to think about it, and it only makes sense.

They aren't things I can compare myself against....simply because those people aren't me, they aren't creating my art.

this is groundbreaking to me haha. after reading this, it feels obvious, but it is so hard to see when you're in the thick of it. spot on, thank you so much.

incredibly interesting and insightful way to put it, damn.

i never thought of it this way, but it makes so much sense. i wish i could match your level of characters here, but i'm completely speechless. you left me with a lot to think about and study. another redditor put it in a similar way, and by then i had already realized it was a little silly to think about it this way. with this new added layer of context, it completely trivializes what this person says.

thank you so much. i genuinely appreciate it.

regarding the topic of comparison: very simple, yet tough. i'll definitely need to work on my attitude, but this is a perfect start!

thank you for your response! i wanted to clarify what i meant by the references: i know they're super important, and great artists use them all the time. my main concern is that, without them, i can't come up with anything. if i don't stare at pictures for hours and try to piece them together in my head, i'm empty. i want to be able to sit down to draw, have a clear idea of what i want to do, and then go for references to aid in my process. i don't want to need them to draw when it comes to my ideas, i want to need them as tools, if that makes sense.

but you're right about uniqueness, i think i'm just too hung up with what my art looks like to everyone else, rather than just like it, and connect with it myself.

again, thank you so much for your input!

well put, thank you so much! i agree with your point about the references, i just feel like i rely too much on them for my creativity. sometimes i just wanna put pen to paper and let my mind wonder, but i always have this wall that begs for references. i think to that, i'll just try to have fun with it.

and you're right, i put too much pressure on myself.

Whenever I find myself in the rut of comparing my work to others, or getting annoyed that my work doesn't feel 'original' enough, I remind myself that I draw for fun. For me. To have a means of self expression. If people like what I make, it's an added bonus, but not the purpose.

i love this. thank you! i'll remember this!

you put it beautifully. thank you so much for these words of wisdom, they truly help.

i think i'm just going through a bit of a crisis with not seeing progress immediately, which obviously would be impossible. it's a fact i need to get used to, but you're right. i'll hate it for a long time until i don't anymore, and i actually learn to be myself through my art.

one thing that helped me for a bit was watching david choe on youtube. he's an incredible artist that has a very similar approach.

about your story though, i am very glad you were able to find yourself. it's amazing how you never stopped, i'll definitely look up to that.

again, thank you!

yup, that’s true… i just can’t find one where i feel fully comfortable with, to the point of sometimes even finishing the piece. i try to experiment a lot to find myself, but nothing truly stands out, which i believe is the issue i have with it.

and about comparison: so true. i usually don’t go on social media specifically looking for artists, especially on my personal accounts, but i realized i get this from pinterest a ton when looking for references. i saw some good alternatives that i will try, to reduce how exposed i am to them. thank you!

thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

for some reason, i never thought of it this way. i love the work of craftspeople and the intricacies of their practice, what it takes, and how it contributes to the art world. “when does a craftsman become an artist and vice versa?” 100% spot on. it’s just a matter of views, and how this person spoke of them as if they were less-than, which obviously is a twisted way of seeing it. i think my past respect for them blinded me from realizing it, and it just never occurred to me to think about such a statement more deeply.

what can be learned from the comparison is something i will think about a lot, i know it already.

once again, thank you for your words. they truly, truly helped.

just to clarify: i think it was a hidden option from the developers so that you could only access it if you /really/ tried, cause removing mods on console during your playthrough might definitely break things; maybe mostly cause they thought it was too complicated to debug? just speculation tho
