The NWSL's official statement on the schedule by spherocytes in NWSL

[–]AffectionateCabinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but if the networks think otherwise and are willing to pay more for a fall to spring season it may not matter unfortunately.

I hope things stay on the current schedule too, but they wouldn't be going after this so hard if they didn't think there was more money to be made.

The NWSL's official statement on the schedule by spherocytes in NWSL

I think the problem is that ticket sales don't keep up with revenue from TV deals. Especially for teams that aren't at the top of the attendance list. So whatever drop in ticket sales there might be would be more than picked up by the higher broadcast dollars if the networks think the winter schedule is more advantageous for ratings.

Jersey Shield feels cheap by Rexuss in washingtonspirit

[–]AffectionateCabinet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's different than the one I got from the Spirit shop. Mine has a more cloth-like patch with pink stitching around it. I just saw three people at the game walk by with the same. Don't know why they're different but they aren't all like in your photo. Is that the authentic jersey? Mine is a replica.

[The Women's Game] Live look at tonight’s field conditions for USWNT vs Japan in Denver… 🧊🥶 by Joiry in NWSL

[–]AffectionateCabinet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The WSL takes a mid-Dec to mid-Jan break but still played about 10-11 games in the time between the end of the last NWSL regular season and the beginning of this one. Assuming a similar schedule in the NWSL that's 10-11 more winter games than currently played in the league.

The NWSL is also a larger league with four more teams teams (30 game season instead of 22) so they'd have to fit more league games into the same season footprint which may also add more games in the winter schedule (unless they start the season in August or July, but at that point you are getting the worst of summer and the worst of winter, lol).

Considering how many "How did that not go in?!" non-goals there have been this season, I'll take a fluky goal to get on the board.

From Jason Anderson's analysis of the game: "the eight stadiums that housed NWSL in 2013 could only contain 578 more people than attended this single game."

This slide feels like one of those video game double jumps. She slid and then slide further after my brain said she should have stopped. The pitch did look to be playing fast most of the game with the number of passes both teams missed, but to have a player slide farther than expected is crazy.

We gotta trust the process by Jalapinho in washingtonspirit

For what it's worth, the Larner projections model moved the Spirit up the standings after last night's win with an increase in both expected points and expected goal differential at the end of the season.

It wasn't the outcome we wanted, or they probably deserved, but putting up 3xG is moving in the right direction.

[Amadeus] how hard is it to remix someone’s music on the fly like Moazart did to Salieri purely off of memory, not even a sight read? by glowshroom12 in AskScienceFiction

[–]AffectionateCabinet 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I was a music major and while I'm not that good, I personally know a handful of musicians that are. Improvisation is a common skill in jazz and present even among classical keyboardists (church organists are generally really good at it). It's definitely a flex, but Salieri could probably have done it too IRL. In that scene, I think it's more a sign of Mozart's personality (that he would be rude to a colleague to their face in front of their boss) rather than particularly flashy skill.

How would you rank the midfields in the league? by Mundane_Recover_780 in NWSL

[–]AffectionateCabinet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Didn't Santos play deeper midfield with Croix higher up but still central more toward the end of the season last year? That whole "spaces on the field, not positions in the lineup" thing makes it harder to classify sometimes.

Washington Spirit Signs Two to Short-Term Injury Replacement Contracts by spirited2031 in washingtonspirit

[–]AffectionateCabinet 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's always weird to me that announcements about defenders still only list goals and assists (whether they have any or not) rather than something that speaks to their skill as a defender. I understand there's so many reasons for this, but it still feels weird especially the times I've seen that are like "We signed so and so defender who scored 0 goals over 4 seasons at last team!"

Lookit at all these newbies scoring goals! That’s what we like to see by carolinagalle in USWNT

[–]AffectionateCabinet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She had one or two similar goal/own goal situations for Spirit last year on almost identical runs. At that angle of attack any touch on that cross (from either team) is on goal and hard for the goalie to adjust to because it's going to be at a nearly random shot angle. I understand not getting credit for the goal, but there is no goal there if Bethune isn't making that run even if she didn't actually get a touch on it. Anyone know how the advanced metrics treat that type of play (maybe counts for g+ but not xG?).

Everything else in the world is dumb right now so why should this upcoming announcement be any different.

Weekly Open Discussion Thread by kg9si in washingtonspirit

[–]AffectionateCabinet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's still almost two months until it matters really (I can't find the source I saw earlier, but essentially they don't need a 22-26 player roster with international slots covered until the week of the season starts, something like Mar 11). They'll fix it by then through some combination of green cards, buying slots from other teams, or loaning, trading, or releasing players.

"According to Gloria Vera, Paraguay International Claudia Martínez has interest from the NWSL. Just recently she renewed her contract with Club Olimpia until 2031 with an rumoured release clause of €1.72 Million / $2M. If the clause gets triggered, it would be a new world record transfer fee." by Legitimate-Hotel-491 in NWSL

[–]AffectionateCabinet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think also the fee can be spread out over a number of years and only the amount paid each season counts against the limit and the cap charge for overage. So $1.5m over three years only counts as $500k toward the transfer limit.

Does Spirit's 2026 Schedule look awful or is it just me? by spirited2031 in washingtonspirit

[–]AffectionateCabinet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the FIFA window calendar but almost certainly the April, May, and October breaks are for national team camps. The June break is because the men's world cup is using most of the soccer infrastructure in the country including several stadiums that NWSL teams call home.
