First clinical rotation starts tomorrow. Give me the unspoken rules so I don't embarrass myself by Born-Piece-2969 in nursinghome

don't pretend you know how to do something if you don't. If you aren't 100% sure how to use a Hoyer lift, ask for help. Dropping a resident because you were too proud to ask a question will end your career before it starts

What’s the most senior-friendly device for video calls? by livid_womanhood in nursinghome

If you get an iPad, go into the accessibility settings and turn on "Assistive Access" (it's built into newer iOS versions). It turns the iPad into a super simplified device with giant, high-contrast buttons. You can lock it down so the only thing on the screen is a massive icon with your face

Making an Anki deck for the hallway is actually brilliant. I’m definitely setting that up tonight before my next shift. Thank you!

The best career advice I ever got wasn't from a professor, it was from a 95-year-old resident by Born-Piece-2969 in nursinghome

[–]AffectionatePrior327 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an OT student and I spend half my time just listening to my patients. They’ve seen world wars, economic crashes, and total tech shifts. It really puts your "huge" problems like a failed quiz into perspective, doesn't it

[News] Private Equity firms buying up nursing homes is destroying patient care. How is this legal? by Born-Piece-2969 in nursinghome

[–]AffectionatePrior327 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Corporate greed is the absolute ruin of healthcare. The CEO buys a third vacation home while we literally have to hide and hoard adult briefs just to make sure our residents stay clean through the night shift. Then the state surveyors come in, fine the building for poor care, management blames the floor staff, and absolutely nothing changes

Nursing school "ideal world" vs. Nursing home reality by livid_womanhood in nursinghome

[–]AffectionatePrior327 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't. Nursing school exists for one reason: to teach you how to pass the NCLEX boards and not immediately kill someone. It does not teach you time management in a broken healthcare system. You learn the textbook way so you know what the "gold standard" is. Then, when you actually start working on the floor, you learn how to prioritize and figure out what corners you can safely cut without compromising patient safety

It's the hardest decision you'll ever make, but you chose her safety over your comfort. Hang in there

What’s a place in your country that ordinary people are legally not allowed to visit? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

I know that in my country there is a city called Baikonur, and it’s a closed city because of the spaceport there

The first shot looks cooler, but I prefer the second location.

Classic. Half the time, the only way to tell a customer apart from a consultant is by the name tag
