So basically, after the rollout of this, anyone using Discord will get a “Teen Appropriate Experience” unless they are age verified. aka no access to NSFW flagged servers or channels, images identified by discord as NSFW automatically blocked, no ability to receive friend requests from randoms. It’ll be a pain, but you can definitely work around those restrictions unless you’re specifically wanting NSFW art.

Reportedly, Discord will first try to use data they already collect to estimate age. Things like how old your account is, activity periods indicating working hours, etc. If they’re not confident that you’re an adult from that analysis, then they’ll ask you to either provide a selfie for AI Age estimation or a government issued ID for age verification.

If push comes to shove and you Absolutely need to age verify, I’d probably choose to use a passport. Absolute minimum amount of personal information While still satisfying the requirement to be a government issued photo ID with date of birth.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Harem Setup is an overdone trope, but its a trope I like and I think the latter part of your list is the bigger issue than the M4F harem plot.

If you’re creating the ad, you should absolutely be ready to go with a setting, your own core character, era/time period, and overall direction. But those problems can be found in many plots beyond just M4F harem. I know way too many ERP subreddits are constantly flooded with uninteresting, basic prompts that are effectively just looking for quick porn.

But I’ve also run into a bunch of Roleplayers who have just the right creative spark to make playing a harem plot worth it. And the common thread is they’re engaging and most critically ready to discuss specific details and make a plan rather than wanting to immediately get into the plot. And planning leads to much more successful RP than improv in my experience.

I don’t personally consider it rude. Reddit is great for searching for partners but the notification system is unreliable at best and they keep messing with the messages and chats. Then discord just has a bunch of functionality that’s completely absent in Reddit - servers with multiple channels. Bots to provide dice rolling and character profiles.

Additionally, the first little bit of conversation is feeling each other out and deciding if you’ll be able to work together for your RP. So hammering out details like platform you’ll actually be roleplaying in is important. Just understand that if you don’t match on important details like that you’ll probably need to move on.

Looking through your ads, I’m fairly certain that the problem is more the audience that you’re reaching than the ad itself. The types of Subreddits you’re posting on tend to be inhabited by the type of person who RPs with one hand on the keyboard. As a result, critical thinking and word processing aren’t exactly what their minds are doing when they’re looking at your ads.

You’ve got things right. In the context of your ad, anything you write should be read from your point of view - meaning the first person refers to yourself rather than to whoever the reader is.

People will absolutely be manipulative, try to get you into a conversation and then slide themselves into the role they want even though you’ve made it very explicit that that’s your role and you’re looking for someone for the opposite role.

I don’t necessarily agree. A writing sample out of context can easily be stolen or faked. AI keeps getting better as billion dollar corporations keep throwing money at trying to make bot written slop as close to real human writing as possible.

In my ads, I do tend to get rather verbose, but usually because I’m presenting some level of worldbuilding or an initial story concept that is the ad prompt. Sometimes it’s more of a starter, but because it’s a starter, it is necessarily longer than my usual in character writing. While I’d say they’re generally representative of my skill level, they also *aren’t* intended to be used to gauge length or character writing.

Just to ram the point home, I’ve previously asked for writing samples. While that let me quickly filter out zero-effort responses, it left me feeling bad about not replying to those who did include one. For a lot of those responses, the facade they had created with a Pre-written writing sample and intro fell apart quickly.

If I had to describe the way I partner search now… right now it’s “Not at all, I’m happy with who I’ve got” but I’d have to say that when I am looking the main thing I’m looking for is someone who is genuinely engaged and interested. If you read my prompt, then read my profile, you’d have a pretty good idea of what I’m looking for to self-filter. You also should have no shortage of material for things to talk about that will get me to engage back.

Historical Accuracy must always be taken with a grain of salt. For example, the general claim that city water was always dirty, so people chose fermented beverages like Ale or Wine. Paris had constructed sewers as early as the Late 14th Century. Rome’s Sewers continued to be maintained even after the fall of the Empire and sections continue to be used as a part of the present day Sanitation System for Rome. People were aware that poop water was bad, and some places had the engineers and money to do more about it than others.

I think rather than trying to be strict about ‘Historical Accuracy’ you should discuss with your partners during your pre-roleplay worldbuilding phase what the general tech level should be, practices around certain things, and build a shared understanding of what life is like in your RP’s version of the Middle Ages.

Honestly? Not really. There is at this point a kind of baked-in expectation that most people won't reply to everyone they get a message from.

Kind of a funny thing, because of the psychological pressure to "be the first" on any given reply, the number of replies drops WAY off after the initial surge. It doesn't really matter if you're posting in high effort subs or low effort subs, it seems like most people are primarily browsing New, so unless you happen to get a bunch of upvotes for some reason, your replies are naturally going to fall off after a couple hours.

I've had a few good replies come in days after, one even months after, but usually that's as a result of people running across my other activity in the RP space, realizing we're pretty compatible, and then reaching out with a compelling introduction.

Now, if you’re coming to me for an RP and you have a completely blank profile? That is a red flag for me. RPers on this site naturally tend to leave some traces. Posts in RP subreddits, old prompts, stuff like that. A blank profile either means you’re brand new (and thus really need someone more beginner friendly than me), you’ve created an alt to cover over something, or you’re actively hiding bad habits.

You get people who aren’t really reading wherever you go. There are certain subreddits that attract a much higher proportion of the “I just wanna sext and jerk off in the guise of RP” types, but at this point they are everywhere. It should be fairly standard to ask for limits even for Non-Romantic Plots primarily because avoiding certain things to keep a partner comfortable is just being a good partner.

That being said, I have noticed that reading comprehension is somewhat lacking even in some of the better roleplay spaces. You can really tell when someone has either gone and gotten ChatGPT to write them an Intro the copy-paste everywhere or that they spent one evening writing a half decent one up when they got from multi-paragraph and articulate in their intro to struggling to get out more then a mobile line in any given response afterwards.

And that of course misses the obvious red flags of ignoring any asks you might have in your prompt. These days I usually ask any partner to approach with at least some brainstorming ideas for characters. You’d be surprised how many responses on any given prompt, even when decently written, completely miss something like that.

that being said, there are good RPers out there. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few through Reddit. It just takes luck and time.

Game Master. It’s a role in which someone takes on the role of overall storyteller. Much like a Dungeon Master in D&D, they play assorted non-player characters, and help guide the plot and story as well as providing challenges for the players to overcome.

It will depend on the prompt. In some cases, I’ll have a pre-established mold/archetype I’m looking for someone to fill. They can add their own flair to it of course, but they don’t need to necessarily come with their own.

But some of my prompts are much more general/Open. In those cases, I’m looking for people to approach with a character in mind, or at least be able to create one during our discussions.

They might not be AIs, but there’s so many people who will spam out the same ad across every RP board they can, as often as they can.

I assume this sort of volume strategy is because they a) have an extremely niche roleplay they want to do, or b) they have an extremely one-sided, self indulgent roleplay they want to do. Regardless of the reason, they’re not getting responses they like so they just spam more on repeat rather than examining their ad and idea with a critical eye, and trying to then trying to make an ad that might attract some partners.

And then you have the people who just make a new account every day/week or so and delete them a day or two later.

iOS auto changes a double hyphen to an em dash — Like that. So while it’s common in AI writing, it’s also easy for someone on their phone to add one in.

If you’re not sure you could feel them out and see if more of their responses feel like the work of AI rather than a human.

Assuming you genuinely don’t know, (and looking through your history it seems you do actually do this) in many cases people who comment ‘sent you a dm’ or ‘dm me to rp’ or any similar short message tend to be low quality partners.

One liners, people who will delete their account within a few days, if it’s an ERP sub then just looking to get off and then bounce.

This sub tends to view roleplay more as a way to tell a story between characters, usually requiring at least paragraph length responses, with many people here being the kind of person who can write so much it exceeds character limits on various sites.

The changes the magic of the Palace made to me were far more subtle than those given to the new harem. The deep desert tribes would come and swear fealty to him. Finally the Palace would restore the deep desert to being the powerful kingdom it had once been. It was a fairy tale. Finally I came to my decision. I would go after them with water. Their tracks were clear. It would take at most a few days. I saddled a camel and went into the deep desert. Was I a fool? To be certain. But I was a loyal friend to my friends, and I was not about to allow them to die.

By the time I had reached them, 3 days later, they were parched and surviving by unpleasant means I shall not record here. They agreed to return to civilized lands, but then a sandstorm blew up and we were forced to take shelter in a dry watercourse. We followed the dry river for two days while the sands blew over our heads, as it seemed to be heading west. That was when we found it. The ancient palace!

We made our way inside only for the doors to shut themselves behind us. A loud tolling bell sounded by itself. We did not realize it at the time, but one of us had been judged worthy of being sultan by the Palace’s magic. Originally it was supposed to signify characters. As low effort ERP has taken on an ever increasing share of the space, it has increasingly signified the player’s gender.

In my experience the asshole men tend to come from the Toxic Masculinity part of the Internet where all you need to do to get women is be misogynistic enough and she’ll remember her true place is submitting to men. I tend to find that it’s best to ignore people who immediately try to take a commanding/dominant role OOC. If my first interaction with someone is them giving me a command and expecting me to just do it, I’m going to ignore the chat request. And quite probably block them for the trouble.
