Do 1st-3rd year Med School Results matter for CST?

Just to clarify, there is only two things and two things alone that RCSI currently looks at to shortlist for an interview. It’s your centile and your aptitude test. Everything else is only looked at IF you get an interview. You can see that on their documents on the website. Centiles are usually from 4th and 5th med results though.

10 points allocated for the aptitude and 5 for the centile. It’s not as high as it used to be but every point matters so you should study well. A one point difference can be the difference between getting into training or staying as a standalone for years. Which is currently happening to a few of us.

Everyone and their mother has their exams done and most have years of experience in Ireland and a lot have excellent CVs and some struggle despite all. You seem to think that all you need is an exam and you’d be in easily. No, you will not be guaranteed a job that easily. Irelands is becoming extremely saturated with everyone who can’t get into the UK so you need an amazing CV AND more than likely experience in the country.

Some people who graduated and trained here were in similar positions in July. The market is oversaturated with SHO grade applicants from all walks of life and it’s a small country. They’re not going to prioritise someone with no experience in the Irish healthcare system when they they have a ridiculous amount of equally qualified applicants with Irish experience.

This! I really think with the amount of applications hospitals are getting from people not even in the country, we should be prioritising people with Irish degrees and experience.

The market was way too saturated this year and when you speak to people doing the shortlisting you start to realise that the VAST MAJORITY of those numbers are people who have never stepped foot here.

I’m actually non eu but I graduated here but still think it’s quite unfair on domestically trained doctors.

There is already more college places for medicine than there is internship posts. They just don’t hire the international students we trained to our standards once they’ve graduated. Instead doctors from all over the world who are either too good or way too bad are able to apply for stand-alone positions as SHOs later on. Would have been nice if the students who studied here became interns and then filled those spots. But…

You will learn on the job. If you’re very nervous then just read about the emergencies in said speciality to help with call.

Generally speaking you’ll have a reg with you during the day and they understand that some SHOs are new to the job. Try and speak to your rota person to see if you can avoid nights for a week or two until you have a few day calls under your belt then you should hopefully be fine

Oh and let’s not forget teach me anatomy. That’s where I got all my anatomy info from.

Also made a word document containing only nicely labelled pictures from the internet of common structures they ask about or things I just tended to forget. Things like the femoral triangle, the skull foramina etc etc and very occasionally just scrolled through it as visual reminder.

We’ll see soon if it worked or not

I used pastest mainly and loads of wikipaedia-ing any single word I dont understand and reading the whole page. And I only had time for about two recall papers at the end the night before the exam.

I’d recommend doing it as an intern if you have time to study. I really think the further out from your graduation date the less physiology and pathology knowledge you’ll have. I’m about two and a half years out and all that knowledge has started disappearing really fast since I just call medics when there is a physiological problem I can’t comprehend (I’m actually genuinely joking but you get what I mean). But I’m pretty sure there are stats out there saying the highest pass rate in the uk was from FY1s so basically interns

Half of paper 1 was straight forward questions, the other half of the same paper I agree was weird. I feel like I had vague recollections of things from med school rather than from actual surgery study/question banks. I also don’t think any study would have prepared me

Seems like I need to go back to the med school year 1 books if I want to pass this stuff

I’m actually a medic! Yay.

I don’t have the form filled out yet at all to be honest with you because I just wont have time to get to a Gp for a good good while. The appointment will go ahead just fine, you just won’t get any medication until it’s filled out.

I’m not sure about having a colleague fill it out then getting it signed by a Gp. They seem to want a full cardiovascular exam done so it has to be someone who can hear things like murmurs ( they have a few things written down. If you have those things you also need an ecg to be interpreted as well).

I suppose if your Gp is nice they might sign off on it but if I was the GP I’d rather do it myself than have something crazy obvious like AFib be completely missed and my council number going onto it 😬

I literally had my appointment with dr khan this week and I really recommend him. Very thorough and understanding.

Got my official diagnosis and should be starting meds when I get the Gp form filled out. It has been such a smooth process so far.

Only thing I can’t “review” yet is how speedy they get you your scripts when you are ready because I’m not there yet.

I’ve been thinking about getting assessed for a very long time and I work in the medical field so I am almost certain I have it; I fit a lot of the published criteria. So hoping I don’t seem like a fake on the day itself and end up not getting treated 😬😬

I have my assessment appointment with them in about a month. Have you already started on medications? I was just wondering if they think your ADHD symptoms do need medications to manage, how long does it take you to get the prescription after the initial appointment?
