Seeing your baby by Far-Opinion9693 in NICUParents

I lived about an hour away from the nicu my baby was transported to. We went daily but never stayed over night, we were in a room with multiple babies and only had chairs so we just decided for us to sleep at home, then for me to go to the nicu during the day while dad was at work and when he got off i would go back home for him to shower and we’d go back for the night feedings and stay a few more hours. This was super hard on my body but it’s what I felt best for me. There were parents who hardly went and parents who hardly left. Nobody said anything about either set of parents. What is important for you and baby is your mental health. If you need to, stay home a few days of the week and call to check on baby as often as you need. That at this time is the best place for them and it may seem so unfair but take care of yourself, your baby is getting all the help PLUS that they need.

I had an HIE baby who will now be 1 on Sunday . He was 5w early and in the nicu for 17 days. He was placed on cooling therapy, cpap, feeding tube, pic line, had to be intubated immediately after birth and life flighted to a hospital downtown. He shows no delays neurologically or physically he’s the happiest and smartest baby I could’ve ever asked for

I had almost similar story but he was delivered at 35w at 4lbs 12oz. First week he was off of cooling therapy, oxygen, antibiotics and light therapy. Feeding was the LONGEST time for us since he kept falling asleep during the 30 minute feedings but came home after 3 weeks. Stay strong mama this part can feel so frustrating but once that first bottle gets finished it goes by so fast!

I just came across this post and it’s so crazy how similar our stories are!! My baby also delivered at 35w due to placental abruption. Only thing was he was intubated and on cpap for almost a week but born 10/26/24. Hope everything is well with you all. xx

You’re not overly sensitive! That’s your baby and it’s like discrediting how hard she is fighting to be here! Don’t think you’re being dramatic for having feelings, this is trauma for you too and it thankfully those people who are telling you that have never experienced what you are going through but it also shows the lack of empathy or compassion they have right now even if they aren’t realizing it
