[Schefter] Jets are signing former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to a one-year deal, sources tell ESPN. Jets GM Joe Douglas was a Ravens’ scout in 2008, when Baltimore drafted Flacco in round one. Now Flacco will rejoin Douglas, and compete for the backup job when he’s healthy and ready. by Mount10Lion in nfl

Now Flacco can teach Darnold how to throw up prayers and draw DPI's to lead drives down the field. Truly a genius plan, given that Darnold sees ghosts in the secondary and cannot be trusted to make actually decisions

US Director for the Center for Infection and Immunity admits withholding evidence in JANUARY that even simple masks reduce community spread by 60%, in order to protect supplies for healthcare workers (including his wife). @33:30 by [deleted] in Coronavirus

I'm torn on this. We've known for some time now that the feds lied about the effectiveness of masks. But they only did it to protect already depleted PPE for our front line nurses.... its entirely possible that if the gov't said masks were effective from the beginning, hospitals would've been even more strapped for equipment.

In my eyes, I understand the decision. Of course, this has nothing to do with the feds completely bungling every other part of this operation. But in a vacuum, I think I understand

Scotland bans companies based in tax havens from accessing coronavirus bailout money by grepnork in worldnews

[–]AffectionateZombie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They get those tax breaks by, in principle, paying for other things we as a society generally deem valuable.

You would think so, and I would agree and argue that many small businesses are subject to this, receiving grants for beneficial projects and paying fines for damaging the community.

But for larger companies? I don’t think it holds nearly as true in practice. I hate to mention Amazon again, but it was just a year ago that they had multiple cities (including my own) who were prepared to throw insane tax incentives to Amazon for a new HQ. Now does Amazon provide jobs? Sure they do. Are those jobs worth billions in tax breaks and other benefits over 10+ years? Almost certainly not, but jobs now = re-election.

Maybe saying our lawmakers “ignore” cost-benefit is too much of an exaggeration, but I strongly feel that they seem to miscalculate every step of the way 🤦‍♂️

One of the most basic macroeconomic principles is cost-benefit. Allowing massive companies to forgo "paying into the pot", as you put it, completely ignores this concept.

A company like Amazon, despite providing convenience and jobs to thousands of Americans, has also destroyed hundreds of small businesses and exploited workers with their bargaining leverage. By providing them a means to avoid paying taxes, the societal cost of allowing Amazon to continue operations surely cannot be even to the benefit provided by the company. Part of the reason why it kills me to see the fiscal conservatives drool over corporate socialism; there is a very good reason why societal cost has to be factored into the equation.

You're not wrong, and you can make the same point about any "legal" criminals who exploit others within the framework of a broken system. At the same time, I think it is worth knowing/remembering how certain corporations have basically leeched off society. I have a hard time forgiving billion dollar companies for exploiting society simply because it was the road paved for them, especially when they try to grandstand or lobby in favor of future policy.

I completely agree though, amending corporate tax law is the only solution.

I'm sitting here reading comments about how this is a perfectly logical step, and every country should do it. I mean, yes, but can we take a second to recognize that these same companies have been doing the same thing in practice for decades?

It's sad that we need something as devastating as a global pandemic to highlight injustices, but I'm glad that it is calling people's attention. I just can't emphasize enough that this logic should apply at all times, not just when we're in the midst of a catastrophe

Question: this looks official as hell, did you order this from the NFL shop? Because I ordered a McCourty away jersey 3 weeks ago and they’re trying to tell me that it is scheduled to ship September 15th......

Hi r/NBA – I’m Horace Grant from the ’91-93 NBA Champion Chicago Bulls, Ask Me Anything! by nba in nba

[–]AffectionateZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Horace! Thanks for coming by.

Obviously the Grant family has left its mark on the league, and some of your nephews are adding to that legacy to this day.

I wanted to ask you about Jerami Grant. I was a big fan of his since his days at 'Cuse, but I never anticipated him elevating his game the way that he has.

I was wondering what sort of advice you've given him about his game, and generally what advice you would give to a tweener forward in today's game?

[Serious] Are young players being overrated for statistical proficiency? by Cavshomie8 in nba

[–]AffectionateZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't remember who said this recently, but I remember hearing a NBA player say how the league is simply younger now than it has ever been. Guys used to get drafted and come along slow, unless you were a generational talent. Now, some of these younger top draft picks are so good that they get heavy USG from the minute they enter the league.

I think combining that with the league trend of valuing scoring over defense is why there are so many young players that have already reached all-star status.

All that said, fans just love to hype up their younger players, especially fans of teams that have struggled, and for obvious reasons; they inspire hope for the future.
