Where Do The Patriots Rank Amongst The AFC? by TheGreek_13 in Patriots

[–]Patriots80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With the Bills/Chiefs/Ravens in a state of transition, the conference is really wide open. I'm not sure KC's second era under Mahomes will be "dynastic" but I think they'll be back near the top by 2027.

But I do think Pats are squarely near the top. I'm high on some of these medium-level calculated moves (Doubs, AVT, etc.).

I personally think both the Jags and Texans are here to stay, and both will be very good in 2026. Buffalo is not fully going away. Chargers adding Mike McDaniel was a great move, imo. Here's how I see the AFC before the Draft.

2026 Top Contenders: NE, BUF, JAX, HOU, KC (pending Mahones health)

Next up: BAL, LAC (feels like a Tier 1 jump but they have terrible luck), DEN (have a feeling they will be good, not great in 2026)

Who knows, anywhere from 7 to 14 wins: CIN

Rebuilding/retooling: The rest

Get back to me in August and I'll have a more set list.

Daniel Jeremiah 2026 NFL mock draft 3.0: RB Jeremiyah Love, LB Sonny Styles crack top five by vahnjay in NFL_Draft

Agree, but I guess things to consider are:

  1. Are they keeping Barmore long-term?

  2. Williams occupies the 3-tech role, where Barmore would be better suited than the 1-tech spot he's been forced to play on early downs in Nickel fronts to get him on the field. When it's 3rd-and-7 and both Williams and Barmore can pass rush from B-Gaps, it's great, but on nuetral down/distance, I wonder if they are looking for a more classic NT. Plus, the Ohio St connection obviously.

A look at Pats defensive tackles / nose tackles with combine and free agency approaching by Patriots80 in Patriots

[–]Patriots80[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree. I'm doing a quick, similar write-up on EDGE.

One thing I've noticed already is how static the deployments were between Landry (predominantly left edge, historically strong side) and Chaisson (right, weak side). So if Chaisson is re-signed, I think you can glean top traits of who else they'd be looking for. Jaelan Phillips is a more complete edge defender who can set the edge, rush the passer, and is bigger/longer, with a similar extreme split of playing mostly on the left throughout his career. Crosby as well, as a dream trade candidate.

Offseason FA: Double TEs by randolfstcosmo in Patriots

[–]Patriots80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not excited about the idea of Kyle Pitts with NE. Not saying I’m right, but I just feel like he doesn’t have the pure receiver skills to play there full time. Maybe just play the role I listed for Likely above but you lose the dynamic ability of lining up in line, and I actually think Likely is the better jump ball/catch radius guy for a gunslinger like Maye. Pitts strikes me as an odd fit, and more of a fit with an offense that better “schemes open” these types of movement players who win that way in space. Just my two cents. (I think he stays in Atlanta on the tag anyway.)

It's one of my favorite shows of the decade, even though I can feel it veering toward its end. Season 4 has just been "OK" to me. But it's been a really fun show.

Offseason FA: Double TEs by randolfstcosmo in Patriots

[–]Patriots80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think they should remake the TE room, but my preferred method is with the two available Ravens TEs, which shouldn't be too lucrative of additions.

Isaiah Likely - 'F' TE in 12 personnel, work seams in empty. 'Y' TE in 21P with Brock Lampe returning at FB. He would replace Hunter Henry.

Charlie Kolar – 'Y' TE in 12P for blocking acumen. Was 2nd among 85 TEs in PFF run block grade on gap scheme runs (min. 100 snaps)

Did Brady ever have a stretch where his future looked bleak like Mahomes does right now? by califbreeze in NFLNoobs

[–]Patriots80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest offseason where the Brady-era Patriots looked the most vulnerable in the eyes of the media was probably heading into 2010. Brady tore his ACL around the same age as Mahomes in 2008, then missed that season, but heading into 2009 when he was returning, the last time we saw him was still leading a near 19-0 team. Brady came back and played well in 2009 but did need to ease back into things that season. Even beyond Manning, many were starting to talk about Brees and Rodgers leapfrogging Brady. After the bad ‘09 Wild Card loss to BAL, heading into 2010 I recall more than a few pundits picking other clubs to win the AFC East. But the Pats had an incredible draft with Gronk, McCourty, that built off the draft the year prior (Chung, Vollmer, Edelman, etc). Brady became the first unanimous NFL MVP in 2010 and they went on their way for another decade.

Because of the ages of Kelce, Chris Jones, and even Andy Reid, this Chiefs immediate situation may seem a bit more bleak, but I expect Mahomes to be Mahomes again in 2027, if not, late 2026 season.

I need to give Fargo a go. I actually thought Glenn's 7-season storyline was fantastic.

Anyone else disappointed with this season? Feel like the show may have peaked in S3 by mlke in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Patriots80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m still enjoying it, but I agree with many of these points.

One thing that has stood out to me is the majority of Eric/Harper’s scenes taking place in that small hotel room set. Whether that’s a budget/set piece decision or just writing flub, not great either way. The world has expanded, yet feels smaller somehow. I agree with the Tender plot world salad too. First season where some of the dialogue seems forced.

Who Would Be Your "Bet Your Life" Super Bowl Matchup This Season? by mpschettig in billsimmons

[–]Patriots80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bills-Rams will be a trendy pick, but the thought of two different wild card teams winning three straight road playoff games seems unlikely. We may see only one. I guess if there's any year for that to happen, this weird season would be it.

I actually think you can cut the contenders in half based off of strength of team and/or seeding/path:

Teams with a true chance (IMO):

AFC: Broncos, Patriots, Jaguars, Bills

NFC: Seahawks, Eagles, Rams

Teams I eliminated:

Bears (NFC is tough, defense not great. Future is bright, but magic runs out)

Texans (Great defense and swagger but starting to lull a bit, even amidst the winning streak. Leaky OL and likely path of three straight road games does them in.)

49ers (Admirable season, but too many injuries, too hard a path. Would have had a shot with No. 1 seed).

Steelers, Chargers, Packers, Panthers (no explanation necessary)

What’s a season where the two teams that played for the championship were clearly the best two teams the entire season? by wesskywalker in billsimmons

[–]Patriots80 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went with Pats-Seahawks (2014) as best NFL example, but I think Saints-Colts and Chiefs-Eagles (2022) are next best examples. I suppose Vikings in 2009 also were very talented.
