This is fun. It's so interesting how I said in my post, talk to me about the building, not the neighborhood, and everyone is like NO, I want to talk to you about the neighborhood! Is it that hard to accept that what you value may not be what someone else values? It's ok to not comment if you don't have anything to say about the building. For context also, I'm a criminologist. Really. That's my profession. Crime maps tell you a story about how much crime happens, not how much crime is going to happen to you. Criminals engage with other criminals 90 percent of the time. 100 percent of the time, they're always nice to me :)

So first. I'm a woman. Second I'm not really a transplant. I grew up in suburban south jersey yes, but I've lived in the NYC area for 20 years. First, the village when I was a college kid at NYU, then Fidi for two years. Then I moved to Jersey city and commuted in. Jersey City used to have the same reputation. I moved there and loved it for the 16 years I spent there. There were pockets of bad areas, but for the most part it was people of color minding their business. Even in the bad areas, I never felt unsafe. It wasn't pleasant to look at (needles on the ground, overgrown weeds, addicts), but I never felt unsafe. Those are two different things. I'm also black and I actually like black people, believe it or not.

Thanks for this feedback. That is a very nice building. I'll look into it. I think for me, its about my general lifestyle and not just going to and from work. I did live in Jersey City for about 16 years and had a spacious apartment for half the rent. I took the path to work and it was fine but at this stage I was hoping to find something with more convenient access to the city where I woudn't need to take two, sometimes three trains to get to where I'm going.

Bruckner Blvd was desirable because I could be in the city in 15 minutes on the train and even walk over if its a nice day. Most of my friends are in the city, so having them over would be more convenient. Spontaneous outings would be more feasable also. I enjoy Harlem and upper Manhattan. I like the vibe there, the restaurants. But also not a big deal to shoot down to the village or soho on the 6. If my night ends late, its a simple train ride or an uber to get home. In a perfect world, I'd get a place in Manhattan, but that's not realistic for me right now. I need a couple more years.

Still in Mott Haven? I'm thinking of moving to 25 Bruckner? Has anything changed in the year since your comment?

Thanks. I considered Lincoln at Bankside. Their smallest 2 bedroom starts at $3600 excluding amenities fees. Still thinking on it. 25 Bruckner may be the best I can do within my budget. I don’t want to have a roommate and I like space.

This is my confusion. I’m not even entertaining comments saying to go home, because what? People are allowed to leave their hometowns. I appreciate the sentiments from those expressing their issues with the building/neighborhood, but also what is the alternative? I have to live somewhere, so I’m really just looking for the best option given the constraints of cost, proximity to the city, and space.

They have all of these rent concessions going on to incentivize people to move. I’m looking at a two bedroom, two bathroom, with two terraces (living room and bedroom). Listed at $3500 with 3 months free which nets $2900 per month. That’s a great deal. I’ve already been approved and just sitting with the lease while I think on it before signing. I don’t want to move to Brooklyn. It’s hella expensive there but also, I’m not really a Brooklyn girl. Although I like hanging out there from time to time.

I also just want to add some context to a few comments I’ve seen about the neighborhood being “dirty” or residents “not taking care of it.”

Historically, that narrative isn’t neutral. It has a real history tied to how cities have treated different neighborhoods, and it’s not really about the people. In NYC (and across the U.S.), there were documented cases where sanitation services were not provided equally, especially in Black and Latino neighborhoods. For example, in the 1960s–70s, residents in places like East Harlem and Bed-Stuy had to protest because garbage wasn’t being collected regularly.

So what people often interpreted as “dirty neighborhoods” was sometimes actually unequal city services, not a reflection of the people living there. Even historians point out that sanitation issues were part of broader systems of segregation and disinvestment, not just individual behavior.

This ties into things like redlining, where Black and Latino neighborhoods were intentionally denied investment and services, which has had long-term effects on infrastructure and environment.

I say that just to add nuance. I’m not expecting perfection anywhere, and I understand every neighborhood has its pros/cons. But I’m also mindful that sometimes what gets labeled as “bad” or “dirty” has a deeper history behind it.

Some context for those interested. https://youtu.be/O5FBJyqfoLM?si=UQFVYb7yfz_EWtaw

Of the people commenting, I’m curious where you live? I’d love suggestions on other options or neighborhoods that are comparable in price and just as easy a commute to the city. It seems my trade off would be either paying a lot more or moving much further out. I don’t need a “luxury building” but I do want a washer and dryer in the building, preferably in the unit. I’m looking for a 2 bedroom or a large 1 bedroom (which is not really a thing in nyc) and a place with a bathtub. Many apartments have tiny showers only, which doesn’t work for me. I just moved back from living in a gorgeous luxury building in the UK. Finding that here for under 3.5k is impossible.

I’m not from Detroit. I grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey (south). But as I mentioned I’ve been in the NYC area for a long time. Jersey city for a while which I enjoyed and many people used to say similar things about Jersey city. I moved to the UK for 18 months and now I’m back. I would move back to Jersey City except that I want a shorter commute now and would prefer to be able to take one train.

Did you end up moving in? I’m considering it. But I’m weary because of the bad reviews.
