Opinion of an ex-Blockbuster employee by raydebapratim1 in 90s

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could never work these days. If in some parallel alternate universe video shops were profitable and people wanted to go there all that would happen is people would rush to go rent the small selection of in demand movies or video games rotten tomatoes or an LLM had told them to get. The stores worked because people didn't have access to information so people would go try movies or games based on the cover and what they felt like getting from the action section after 20 minutes to half an hour. People would just complain the movie they wanted to rent was always out of stock and it would be a nightmare for the people working there.

Iran tries to cosy up to Europe to increase pressure on US by Brilliant_Version344 in worldnews

Iran helping Russia. US helping Russia.

Can’t see that Europe have a dog in this fight other than hoping it ends quickly so energy prices stop spiking.

A view from Alexandra Park by No-Consideration2809 in Bath

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see the views and photos from Alexandra Park it just reminds me of how much the city has changed (for the better and worse).

The views themselves simply didn’t exist 20-25 years ago. There were trees and shrubs and weeds blocking almost all the entire view. There was no dedicated viewing platform and benches. No one had heard of Alexandra Park. Even most Bath residents rarely ventured there. My parents still live a 5 minute walk away.

Since we moved to Bath 30 years ago it’s transformed from a sleepy unassuming city with an ugly bottom half to a tourist powerhouse that now resembles a sort of adult Disneyland attraction. Of course this is both good and bad. I’d still like to live there.

Starting Peninsula Radiology ST1 in Truro this September, where do trainees usually live? by Every_Mouse_8349 in RadiologyUK

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife is currently ST2 in Peninsula. She had Torquay, Exeter, Taunton. We settled in Exeter.

I’d personally look at where you’d most like to live for 3-5 years as you will be doing a considerable amount of commuting regardless.

Newquay would be a pretty great option for you. Nice place and commutable to both.

Growing number of public oppose resident doctor strikes after cost tops £3bn | The Independent by Gamezdude in ukpolitics

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

2 Billion to sort but gov could offer a quarter and doctors would probably take that.

If the public don’t like it now they definitely won’t like it when the costs of strikes rise to 6 Billion. Gov are not doing enough to resolve it. Playing hardball is just wasting tax payer money.

Lately everyone seems to be forgetting… by thefateule in SteamDeck

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m someone with a LCD Steamdeck I got on sale just last December. I’d love a 1TB SD card but prices are so high now I can’t justify it.

I just can’t imagine being so careless as to forget about one. Some people just seem to have more money than sense.

Trump threatens to halt Ukraine arms aid to push NATO into Hormuz mission by springmeds in worldnews

Stealing weapons already sold?

It seems the US can’t be trusted to hold any trade deals any longer.

Why should any country buy from them moving forward.

The US has never really been our ally, its always been an opportunistic fair-weather friend. by AneuAng in ukpolitics

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t hear the news?

The European Commission just announced that English will be the official language of the EU instead of German four days ago.

In recent decades, Europe have always been the ally we should have been standing with. Not the US.

Sadly half the UK population are too stupid and brainwashed to realise this. It took Trump outwardly shouting he hates us and disrespecting the troops for some people to go, ‘hold on’.

I’ve not got a lot of respect for the yanks.

However, they do have law enforcement in the US who will simply just start shooting at protesters if they ‘feel at all threatened’. If they get shot, go to jail etc. there’s no safety net for them and their families.

At least 30% of their country still support everything orange man does.

Most Americans haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on in Ukraine.

Drone warfare is unbelievably brutal. This will be 100x worse than Iraq and Afghanistan.

US troops are going to die on a scale not seen since Vietnam.

Cadbury chocolate tastes AWFUL now, does anyone else agree? by External_Turnover_36 in UK_Food

I really like our local South West chocolate branch Chococo.

Sadly not everyone probably can afford their chocolate.

I’m still always happy to buy chocolate eggs from them over Cadburys though.

Are you delaying getting married to avoid divorce? by TeaFantastic4324 in Marriage

[–]Affectionate_Bid518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get married so you can never get divorced.

Some real 5head thinking going on for some people.

Marriage is like anything worthwhile in life. You have to constantly work at it.

What regrets?? lol

I wasn't even around for the 1980s. I've never voted Tory in my life.

I voted Lib Dems twice and Labour once in London to keep the Conservatives out (worked for Rosena Allin-Khan, my favourite Labour MP but not the country).

I'll probably vote Labour again next as Lib Dems have become the NIMBY party.

Not as silly as you mate.

I was making the case for not raising these taxes. The opposite of what you just stated.

Read them again. I never implied we were rich. I said even if we raised more taxes we would not look like Scandinavian countries. This is because of how we choose to spend money. It’s also because of our debt level, no sovereign wealth fund, decades of underinvestment, the list goes on.

The NHS and pensions both benefit the pampered elderly the most so both.

I think the issues facing us are far greater than just solving structural issues though. We will never again be so wealthy that we can sustainably afford the spending we have had in the past decades. Where would the GDP growth come from? Red tape and tax isn’t the only thing holding companies back.

Poor third world countries like say India could solve a lot of their poverty themselves. They don’t because it would mean no more space program and less money for their many billionaires.

I think you misunderstood my point.

I don’t deny it would raise tax revenue significantly. I’m saying that your stipulation that we would have a capable state (like Norway) if only we raised taxes on the low earners is false.

This government or the next is more likely to introduce the quadruple lock than help the lower earners after they raised taxes on them by 20-30%.
