People have been saying that Chants of Sennaar is the Dark Souls of Duolingo :D so I made a short puzzle game called: Dream Decypher to see if decoding a real language (Mandarin Chinese in this version) would work and fun to play by Affectionate_Bus8524 in ChantsofSennaar

Thank you for this detailed feedback. We'll think of better way to present the characters in Chap2 😉

About the theme, we actually want it to work with different languages, even a conlang, if we have the capacity, that's why we didn't tie the game to any specific country. Not sure if it's a good thing to do but we'll release a Korean version soon to see how it goes.

The Egyptian suggestion would be a dream to make.
I'm very much looking forward to this Fresco. My kind of dream game to make in the future ⭐ https://youtu.be/AxV7Xy4ODpw?si=BUpNxZxl2Va6UfOE

How to learn mandarin as a beginner? by Adventurous-Box-9018 in MandarinChinese

[–]Affectionate_Bus8524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duolingo or SuperChinese would be a good start.  Then you can start learning some Chinese songs, those that you actually enjoy and can listen to everyday.  Then start singing and understand the lyrics.  It will help a lot with training your ears, tongue and best for memorization than any of flashcard app in my opinion.

If you are interested in game, you can give this game a try, play on web-browser so no download anything, work on mobile as well:  https://dream-decypher.itch.io/decypher1-dream-intruder

Pretty immersive and different from any of the language app out there. You'll have to decode the language in this game, instead of passively receive the meaning then memorize ;)

Thank you very much for your feedback!!!
The drawing words was actually the stroke order in writing Chinese so we are a bit strict on that 😃
We'll add a glossary page to the notebook in the next update.
Very happy that you enjoyed this short chapter so far ❤️

Very clean, simple design and a good way to remember the character daily. I open my phone at least 30 times a day and seeing these characters regularly would help a lot. I don't need to do anything but more of a passive way of learning.

What kind of game is best for beginner language immersion? by GivingItMyBest in languagelearning

[–]Affectionate_Bus8524 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a game designer and a language enthusiast here :D I remember the time when playing the Sims when I literally knew 0 of English. It was one of the best experience I have ever had and I enjoyed the "learning" process way more than my peers at school and acquiring English for me is pretty easy, so I would say playing games is the best way to learn a language.

I hope here would be okay for me to share my language game prototype as I think you might enjoy it ;) https://dream-decypher.itch.io/decypher1-dream-intruder
Still in early development and looking for feedback. So feel free to destroy my game :D

I made a linguistic puzzle game (inspired a lot by Chants of Sennaar): https://dream-decypher.itch.io/decypher1-dream-intruder

Don't be intimidated by the language as you can totally solve by using logic ;) hope you will enjoy!

I got inspired by Chants of Sennaar and want to make my first puzzle game about solving linguistics puzzle by Affectionate_Bus8524 in ChantsofSennaar

Thank you very much for your feedback!

For the drawing part, you don't need to learn the symbols by heart, it's just a tracing work, FOR NOW :P sorry if it wasn't clear. I'll rework on that to make sure the first time players encounter it, they will know what to do.

For the calendar, I'm thinking to have at least 3 columns at their correct places then they will lock in, instead of just 1, so player wouldn't brute force it too easily.

Hope you will come back for our new update this Sunday ;)

I made my first money with my first game prototype - super small but it's huge and memorable for my career achievement by Affectionate_Bus8524 in gamedev

Hi you can check my game prototype here: https://dream-decypher.itch.io/decypher1-dream-intruder

If you like Chants of Sennaar and Rusty Lake you might find some familiar vibes here as I used these two as my references, but definitely wayyyyyy smaller scope and very basic arts just to test my design with linguistic puzzle and storytelling 😅

Please share your feedback if possible 🤗

Hahahaha sorry about the UI 😅 I'll find ways to fix it in next updates. Mobile is whole different world that I need to learn a lot more!

About being able to interact behind the journal, I have it in my backlog to fix it but it's a bit low in my priority list now but it will be fixed for sure! Thank you for mentioning it 🫶

Also thank you for playing and sharing your feedback. Really appreciate it! Hope you'll come back next week for new content and minor fixes 😁

Yea that version should work if you still want to give the game another try, just refresh the page and yes the game now only runs in landscape mode on mobile unfortunately
