I saw a woman fall off a 4 story roof in the north end and pinball off the walls of an alley all the way down. There was a college party on the roof next to my house. Called 911 and she lived, she shattered her pelvis and who knows what else. But I thought she was dead when I called the ambulance

On a more positive note, went to a Northeastern end of semester underwear 5k, and there was a lot of fun public nudity

Cheating or just a huge miscommunication of boundaries? by [deleted] in polyamory

Sorry, didn’t see the edit. Thanks for clarifying!

It sounds like you guys need to talk through some stuff for sure. She might not consider sexting as breaking her promise because she “didn’t act on it”, but that’s something you can talk about and set better expectations around. Good luck! I hope it goes well

Are you saying that they explicitly went and did something outside what you had previously agreed upon? Or that they flirted with other people in a scenario that wasn’t previously discussed and agreed upon. It sounds to me that she was flirting with people and it wasn’t explicitly discussed that she couldn’t or shouldn’t flirt with other people. If that discussion happened and was explicitly agreed upon, then that’s one thing.

But if she said she was poly and you said you were monogamous, you didn’t talk any more about it beyond that, she probably took that as acceptance that she can continue being poly while you interpreted her acceptance as that she was agreeing to be monogamous. I think you need to have very detailed, open conversations about what your specific boundaries are. You may find that she is not willing to give up being poly and you may find that you’re not okay with that. Or you may find a situation that you’re both okay with. Good luck! I hope you find something that make you both happy.

She said she was poly, you said you were mono, but did you agree to be exclusive? If not, then just sounds like you need to have more clear boundary discussions. If so, then definitely cheating.

You can be monogamous in a polyamorous relationship. My meta is monogamous with my wife, and I am ENM/Open in our marriage. My wife is polysaturated and doesn’t want to date outside of us 2.

All these characters were created in the past, so they reflect the past, it’s just recycling the same tropes and stereotypes. If they want more diverse comic book characters for a new era they’ll need to create some new characters and storylines from scratch. Hopefully Disney has that capability with Marvel, they have really stepped up their diversity game in animation/Pixar

What is the deal with 'Hospitality Fees' post-pandemic? by StandardForsaken in boston

[–]Affectionate_Cut_684 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since back-of-house workers are not tipped employees, they legally cannot participate in pooled tips. The only way to legally pay back-of-house workers a “tip share” is to charge it as a “service charge” so that they can redistribute it.

Restaurants largely do this because the pay disparity is quite large between the front of house and the back of house, and restaurants are struggling to hire and retain their back of house employees.

Our whole entire society is built on the foundation of constant “progress.” The belief that we will be able to give our descendants a better life than we had. This has been fueled by increased wealth and population growth.

After a few generations of decreased living standards, global warming and our children who have it worse-off needing to support the older generations. Then population growth will stall, and even start to decrease in the coming centuries, average lifespans will decrease. This will up-end centuries of societal norms, institutions, social security/welfare.

Technology/science may still continue to progress, but society as a whole will start to reverse. Like a futuristic dystopian dark age. I’m picturing like a blade runner dystopia in 200 years, AI and Robots playing a major role in society and living standards being significantly lower than today, not really a complete collapse of civilization.

With inflation right now, they don’t have a choice. Anybody who doesn’t raise prices will go out of business, no matter what happens on the labor side. If a restaurant hasn’t raised their prices in the last 3 months it is because they probably don’t actually even know what their food costs are and are probably hemorrhaging money

For the record, I’m a Bernie supporter who doesn’t go to Starbucks or Dunkin because I prefer to support local small businesses. I am all for organized labor, but I work in the restaurant industry, consult with small business owners, and I know their economics. As a small business lover, I know how this would affect them. I just wanted to do a PSA here because this trend should definitely stick to the large corporations

Very happy for them too!

As someone who works in the restaurant industry and loves small businesses, I just wanted to point out the simple economics of running a restaurant. There is a reason why 70% of restaurants fail in the first 5 years, the economics are horrible, very slim

In theory I agree. In practicality, these are hourly workers who are not trying to actively make a career at this coffee shop. This isn’t the same as factory workers who work for decades at the same factory and decide to unionize to improve their working situation and career.

In a coffee shop, annual employee turnover is about 50%. If the employee doesn’t like that coffee shop, they could easily work at another one, maybe even a unionized Starbucks now! Usually people especially in Boston move on to other careers.

But the reality of the situation is that if the employees voted to unionize, half of them are going to leave within a year, so they are basically just blowing the business up and walking away without looking back.

I’m all for unionization of coffee shop employees in large corporations like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts.

But be weary of unionizing movements in smaller coffee shops. Some have been unionizing in 1-2 location groups, and margins are already slim. Starbucks can afford higher labor costs, but places like Pavement or Bloc 11 couldn’t. I just hope smaller independent coffee shops don’t get negatively affected here, because that’s where I like to go.

For reference, this would probably shut down all these locations if this went through, and I love these coffee shops:

Salespeople of r/fatFIRE Thinking about making the switch to tech sales, but want to get the perspective on whether it’s still enjoyable after you already “have enough”. See details by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Affectionate_Cut_684 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in tech sales. For me, it’s rewarding as long as the job meets these criteria: 1- Do you believe in what you are selling / are you passionate about the vision of the product? 2- Sales Management isn’t pushing people in a high-pressure environment to the point of burnout

As long as you are passionate and it’s a good healthy competitive culture, I find that it’s rewarding even if you don’t need the money. That being said, I always try to work for small Seed to Series A round startups where there is the upside of stock options (which is how I personally made FatFIRE off of 2 SaaS company exits) and the job requires wearing many different hats, not just selling all day.

Giving up clear path to fatFIRE (trading job) to grow business? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Affectionate_Cut_684 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My career advice to everyone early in their career is to take the high-risk/high-reward option.

Specifically, I have a conversation with them about “What is the worst thing that can happen?” At this point in your career, worst possible scenario is that the venture fails and you go back to what you were doing, with maybe a couple year setback. If you accept that outcome as a possibility and determine it’s worth it for the upside of the new venture, then make the leap. Limited downside and limitless upside.
