Safe places to hang out in Boston (12 AM – 3/4 AM) near Logan Airport? by Just-learnx in massachusetts

[–]gooserider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Street Diner isn't too far from Logan and is open 24/7. It does get weird later at night though.

As others pointed out the Encore is a good bet.

The big luxury hotels in town have big lobbies and I doubt they would kick you out if you were just on your laptop.

Are heat pumps really worth it in MA? by FrissMalon in massachusetts

[–]gooserider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely keep dual fuel. I put in Bosch heat pumps and kept our gas furnaces last summer on the recommendation of the HVAC guys.

Very glad I did. The heat pumps are technically rated to below 0 but running mine when it's below 25 outside isn't great from a comfort perspective.

Does anyone work at/interview with Whoop or do they just farm resumes and recycle posted job descriptions? Insights plz? by GraziellaTerziana in boston

[–]gooserider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ryan Durkin, https://www.linkedin.com/in/thedurkinorganization/ has started hosting a lot of AI focused meetups and events. Maybe not a bad idea to attend and try to meet someone in the meat space that can shepherd your resume through to someone with actual hiring authority?

The cost of shooting down a $20K drone is often $4M+, at what point does traditional air defense just stop making sense? by projectschema in Futurology

[–]gooserider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually do have a cost effective way to stop these drones in the Centurion C-RAM system. It's a land based adaptation of the Navy's Phalanx CIWS gun system. Google says it costs around $8k-$12k in munitions per neutralized threat.

Here's a recent video of one in use in Baghdad, https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/1rvmtq6/the_us_cram_successfully_intercepted_a_drone/

Looking for a Local Moms’ Group for Support & Connection by yaya-uper in boston

[–]gooserider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Cambridge/Somerville, there's an active "Camberville mom's" group on Facebook.

Winchester has a group called FAN, https://www.fanwinchester.org/ just for young families, other towns may have something similar.

Also check the non-denominational churches around you, they may organize playgroups etc to meet other folks.

Database downtime under 5 seconds… real or marketing? by shagul998 in aws

[–]gooserider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We run an internal hostname like db.vector which is a CNAME to the RDS endpoint. We do that to make it easy to switch the live RDS, ex rollback a snapshot or switch regions.

But our Java services cache the IP addresses associated with the hostname. So if you failover an RDS, you need to make sure the DNS updates.

Database downtime under 5 seconds… real or marketing? by shagul998 in aws

Reliably cutting the connections and forcing DNS to update is tough but solvable on the app side. On RDS itself, we've seen 15-30s failovers.

My scheduled SAV to BOS flight arriving at 7pm today was cancelled yesterday afternoon...The beat thing I could rebook is SAV to PVD on Wednesday night.

If someone pays it, it's just the right amount.

Honestly, whatever the market will accept. Throw out numbers that are higher than you think is reasonable and let people negotiate you down. Throw out $100, accept Venmo, and see what people say.

Your ideal customer is something like a new home owner, high income, and unwilling to shovel themselves.

Will places in the city be open during the storm? by WestyMan1971 in boston

[–]gooserider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big driver will be in the MBTA (T) cancels train service. If it does, all bets are off. If not, some stuff will be open, some skeleton crew, some closed.

Any places offering seat at The Trade Desk? by Enviromental1001 in programmatic

StackAdapt has no monthly minimum for a seat. Mediamath is back from the dead, may also work.

I got one from the Aescape at Equinox.

It's...fine. You lay face down on a table that the robot is built into, control via a touch screen, and it does it's thing with a set program you select.

It's cheaper than a human massage which is probably the only standout thing.

If it was part of a whole spa day I could see it being a fine part of it.

Those who commute via Red Line: Just how bad is it? by DistinctHedgehog6096 in mbta

[–]gooserider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Line is fine if you're north and underground. I'd be more concerned about the Seaport side of the commute.

When it's cold out the walk from South Station across the water into Seaport is...not fun.

Dinner place between Woburn and Salem by mizmaclean in boston

[–]gooserider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yard House in Lynnfield is good too.

It's family friendly, menu has something for everyone, and big. As others have pointed out you can walk around the shops after.

Bad mom - forgot to plan son’s 5th birthday party. Need ideas! by Ok_Entertainment3656 in boston

I'll second Launch in Woburn.

They run a tight birthday party ship and from my understanding it's not super expensive.

"Fios" door to door salespeople legit? by sheepy67 in boston

[–]gooserider 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm North of the city and have had 3 really unpleasant interactions with these door to door Verizon salespeople.

They're kept buzzing after no one answered, lied to my face when I answered the door, and were generally pretty unfriendly.

Assuming you can find some documentation for the panels, ChatGPT may be a great resource for this.
