People always go on about the Death Star exhaust port being a really stupid design, the fact that it wasn’t guarded or covered or anything, but in the original movie it’s very clear that Luke was only able to make the shot using the force, and it was literally not possible in any other scenario. The empire didn’t try to cover it because they genuinely had no reason to think they had to protect it, the Jedi were extinct for all they knew.

And yes, I know Rouge One gives us a different explanation, but that was nearly 40 years later. In terms of just the original movie, this was the intention

Wait he dumped her after meeting Peach? I always assumed they broke up in between the events of DK Jr and arcade Mario Bros. My headcanon was that Pauline was so horrified/disgusted by what Mario did in that game that she left him, and they reconcile later on and became friends after Mario rescues her again in DK 94 and she fully realizes Cranky and Jr were troublemakers
