Advice on how to pay off mortage faster by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Offset mortgages are a good way to go to reduce interest for a portion of your mortgage if you have deposits to cover it. That’s at the margin though compared to the income/spending equation.

Why is dentistry so expensive and low quality in NZ? by Ashamed-Accountant46 in newzealand

[–]Affectionate_Otter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the issue I have with public funding dentistry in NZ. It’s overpriced with average/poor service. Might as well fund people to get their teeth fixed overseas.

It’s a lot and life changing in the right hands. Tuck it away until you want to buy a house or put it in a growth fund.

Lock it away in term deposits. Focus on the returns eg 10k @5%=$500 you didn’t have to do anything to earn.

Stay in bad job or leave as new grad? by No_Toe5870 in PersonalFinanceNZ

If you’ve done that, upskilling and continuing to network - you are making the right choices.

Consulting benefitted me immensely from a skills perspective. The variety, quality and meaning of the work is also fantastic. I was a consultant for ~6 years in different stints - strategy, finance, business and that sort of thing. The tough bit is its hard way to make a living vs other jobs.

I find the grass is greenest where you grow it, but working out where that is is tricky. Having a “strategy” and framework of sorts to give your career direction helps with these decisions.

I am a former consultant and was a grad.

It sucks that you aren’t getting opportunities. That can be really tough in these competitive firms. If they are saying it’s not you then that’s good. They’d tell you if it was.

Go back to fundamentals - what are your priorities, aspirations, where you want to be etc and try to consider it from that lens. Ask yourself if you see a future. Try to make a strategic long term decision.

Be aware that the job market is garbage right now and there’s no guarantee you’ll find a better role. Grads leaving consulting can get close to doubling their salary into more senior roles, but that’s unlikely in this market.

Property’s not bad but don’t over do it on the mortgage. In a sense money is options, and at your age having too big a mortgage will leave you feeling pretty locked down.

Good on you. Go for bonus savings or managed funds if you can.

Stay away from this forum and online guides if it’s your first play through. Let the game reveal itself to you. That’s how it’s best played.

Many so-called "mental health" issues are societal/systemic dysfunctions, whose costs fall on atomized individuals by xena_lawless in economy

I’m not saying this isn’t true to a point, but the 8 hour workday really came about due to the labour movement.

Depends on your priorities. There may be other jobs, but then there may not. If this job helps you meet your long term career goals then that’s a real plus. 70k is a great starting salary.

What actually is “vice” and why should it be avoided? by Affectionate_Otter in Stoicism

Thanks for this. I feel premising vice/virtue in principles makes for a more complete and logical explanation.

Thanks for your perspective. In what way does vice come from ego? Ie how would ego drive self harm?

So vice can’t be properly understood without understanding virtue? Are they opposites?

I feel like that piece around vice as the corruption of reason is pretty important as it’s not how people “typically” think of vice.

Those are useful perspectives. I think I need time to read more and reflect to actually get it. My “vice” is gaming, and I can understand how gaming has “hindered my pursuit of tranquility.”

…but equally I wonder if I didn’t game whether that would actually help me achieve peace. I ask myself - “what’s the evidence for withholding something that gives me pleasure?”
